Gui’s? What letter does the apostrophe replace? Did you mean to say “gui is”?

So “gui is are for idiots”?

Maybe the idiot is the one who doesn’t know how apostrophes work?

Andrew15_5 ,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

How would you make GUI plural then? Apostrophe is an attempt to do just that, I believe.

squaresinger ,

Easy, add a lowercase s after the acronym: GUIs.

Apostrophes are only used if the acronym ends with s: SAS’s or alternatively SAS’, both are possible.

lseif ,

the apostrophe may make it a bit clearer… even if technically incorrect usage

squaresinger ,

Could have just used propper capitalization of the acronym. Would have been equally clear.

None of y’all are plumbers and most of y’all work in IT and it fucking shows.

This is not a case where a photo is required or even all that helpful.

A photo shows that water is running. Is it hot, is it cold, is it lukewarm? Who knows?? Certainly not the landlord.

Probing questions sure would have been helpful. Like is the water lukewarm or cold?

If it’s either it doesn’t matter, the heater is not working and a plumber is required.

Now what if the water isn’t running? Well then the response would indicate that.

“No there’s no water at all when I turn on the hot water.”

Ok that’s an entirely different problem, could be the heater, could be someone turned a valve off.

But even that much information isn’t all that important because no matter what the problem is, or where it’s located, the tenant will not be able to resolve this issue, a plumber is required. They’ll need access to the premises, because water heaters are generally inside the unit, which means the tenant will likely need to be present when the plumber shows up.

The plumber is absolutely not going to show up with a water heater based on what information he can get out of a text. He’s going to come in, and investigate the issue. Sometimes it’s a quick fix, sometimes it’s a problem. Generally the tenant is going to have absolutely no way of resolving it themselves, and generally a landlord wouldn’t want them to.

This is not an IT ticket, it’s a "call a fucking plumber my shits broken " ticket.

jarfil ,

None of y’all are plumbers and most of y’all work in IT and it fucking shows

You’re not a plumber and you lack problem fixing skills and it fucking shows. 🙄

The photo shows:

  • water is running, meaning: the faucet works, the pipe to the faucet works, the water is not shut off
  • the faucet seems to be of a two valve kind, meaning: if the tenant is not an idiot and didn’t turn on the wrong valve, and they did wait a reasonable time for hot water to come out, then the problem is not with the faucet but with the heater
  • the faucet can not be the problem, meaning a plumber does not need to carry a spare faucet, but the pipes could be hooked up wrong (hot pipe to cold valve and vice versa), which could be and easy fox for the landlord themselves without having to pay a plumber

Probing questions would be only useful if the tenant spent some effort on answering them, instead of, for example:

is the water lukewarm or cold?

A: Yes.

what if the water isn’t running?

A: There is no hot water.

This is not an IT ticket, it’s a general problem solving procedure issue.

rockerface ,

Floating point is dope

henfredemars ,

I’m particularly interested in how emulators deal with the mismatch between the FPU of the target hardware versus the host.

It’s a fascinating and frustrating topic when you’re trying to emulate floating point in a specific way using hardware that doesn’t exactly do what you need. But almost. For example, maybe your host rounds differently or uses different status flags so the challenge is to find as many cases as possible where you can still exploit your host FPU without generating incorrect results.

I have held a vendetta against YouTube Premium for nearly a decade. I will never use it. I don’t give a shit how cheap it is or how many features they take away. I will stop watching YouTube entirely before I pay a single cent for Premium.

You used to be able to lock your phone on iOS and continue listening to YouTube. I always had audio playing, but I was still connected to my environment. They took that away just so they could add it back in as a feature in Premium. Maybe it seems overly petty to be this upset about it 9 years later, but I don’t care. I’m a treat addict and they fucked with the product. I let go of most things when it comes to enshitification because the alternative is to drive yourself mad. But this is a hill I will die on every time forever.

    Fuck YouTube Premium.

    MrSqueezles ,

As someone who has worked on free Internet services, it used to be easier to make money from ads. A video ad view was worth nearly a dollar US. Audio ads were maybe 7 or 8 cents a listen. Now, a video ad view makes a few cents and audio ads are worthless. They likely did the math about how many audio ads they’d have to play on the phone in your pocket to break even and decided you’d hate it more than they would. Since content owners get just over half of what YouTube makes, they’d probably be pissed about seeing the drop in income too.

Feel free to hate YT. This was an economic decision at around the time when ad revenue had just fallen off of a cliff.

    ScrewdriverFactoryFactoryProvider ,
    @ScrewdriverFactoryFactoryProvider@hexbear.net avatar

I think you are correct. I didn’t know the exact numbers but I was aware of general reasoning. The economic forces that push unethical design decisions range from mildly annoying to horrifying depending on which decision you’re talking about. Facebook using A/B testing with neural imaging tech to minimize users’ opportunities to disengage from the platform is probably on the more extreme end. Regardless, I don’t think the decisions being objectively correct when optimizing for the continuation of capitalist firms makes them any less morally onerous.

Yes, theft from the public has definitely decreased since the the collapse. /s

Mandatory conscription to the military (and the corruption there too) ?

There are plenty of countries that do that after they lose around 20 percent of their population in a brutal war. Like Vietnam, for example.

    Iron curtain ?

You mean the one the west put up? news.stanford.edu/…/stalin-not-want-iron-curtain-…

Free speech and freedom of expression ?

Western countries have more sophisticated censorship and media apparatuses I give you that. Speak out in a real way though and look what happens to people like Fred Hampton.

    Zastyion345 ,

I looked at some of the figures in the article most of them see slight improvement and the conclusion pretty much backs up my point of it not being worse but slightly better.

Life expectancy gains have been large and rapid, and life expectancy for both men and women reached its highest level in Russia’s history in 2019.

To the rest of your responses/points, it is somewhat tiering to respond to all of them with a formulated response, so I will ask do you know someone that lived in a former USSR state ? If your answer is no then as I said, statistics and Graphs can get you only so far, what my parents know and my grandparents know but won’t admit out of pride is that USSR sucked, our current system sucks somewhat too but at least I’m not forced to worship the state, can speak freely like you are doing right now, attend a pride parade or KSČM (Communist party in Czechia) parade, and cast my vote in an election.

And so you know, who is voting for politicians that steal from the people ? The same old people who wish USSR was back, my grandparents vote for a party that promises Socialist democracy (SMER-SD) and only thing they have done is steal from the people. Like with the faults of communism/socialism/USSR they ignore scandals and the stealing from SMER.

concerning life expectancy and quality of life and corruption, funnily enough

But behind the self destructive behaviour, the authors say, are economic factors, including rising poverty rates, unemployment, financial insecurity, and corruption. Whereas only 4%of the population of the region had incomes equivalent to $4 (£2.50) a day or less in 1988, that figure had climbed to 32%by 1994. In addition, the transition to a market economy has been accompanied by lower living standards (including poorer diets), a deterioration in social services, and major cutbacks in health spending.

“What we are arguing,” said Omar Noman, an economist for the development fund and one of the report’s contributors, “is that the transition to market economies [in the region] is the biggest … killer we have seen in the 20th century, if you take out famines and wars. The sudden shock and what it did to the system … has effectively meant that five million [Russian men’s] lives have been lost in the 1990s.” Using Britain and Japan with their ratio of 96 men to every 100 women as the base population, the report’s authors have calculated that there are now some 9.6 million “missing men” in the former communist bloc. “The typical patterns are that a man loses his job and develops a drinking problem,” said Mr Noman. “The women then leave and the men die, first emotionally and then physically.”

Overall, the Russian death rate from accidents most of them involving alcohol has risen 83% since 1991. source

In order to have been a worker for at least 5 years in both systems and therefore have an informed opinion of the difference, you’d need to have been at least 25 by the collapse.

Arch- usually indicates the highest form possible without utter transcendence into a different form, or at least a, well, overarching rank of some sort. (Semantically related, but not etymologically, apparently. At least not directly. But I digress.)

It is, after all, why the name of Arch Linux is what it is (so sayeth Wikipedia). The creator wanted it to be the best with no equal.

An arch-vegan might be one best at not only avoiding animal-based produce but also convincing people to convert to veganism, as well as making normally well-adjusted vegans feel that they're not being a good enough vegan.
