Kneeling for the US flag is kneeling for an imperialist bourgeois state, which is incompatible with communism at the most fundamental level. This meme looks like a patriotic socialist brainworms

survivalmachine ,

It depends on what you interpret kneeling to mean. In the US, kneeling for the flag or kneeling for the national anthem is a form of protest when tradition dictates that you should stand with your hand over your heart. In recent years, the act has made news due to NFL players (starting with Colin Kaepernick) kneeling in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in the US. It is not an act of reverence as if you were kneeling before a ruler or deity.

Kneeling for the US flag and supporting communism/socialism and LGBTQ rights are all very leftist concepts.

If would be a good meme if it actually made reference to Kaepernick. Kneeling for a symbol is historically honorary, so without Kaepernick the meme is ambiguous. It wasn’t so much that Kaepernick was kneeling, it was that he was not standing for the flag with everyone else.

survivalmachine ,

If you’re unfamiliar with America and it’s traditions, I can see your point. Americans don’t need the extra visual aid. “Kneeling for the flag” only means one thing.

lolcatnip ,

I’m American and I didn’t get the reference.

survivalmachine ,

Fair. I can only speak about my lived experience. It may have faded from the public eye, but when I was living in the states, just saying the word “kneel” would have gotten half the population frothing at their mouth.

lolcatnip ,

Yeah, I think I would’ve have gotten it in 2019, but kneeling definitely isn’t at the top of my mind as a form of protest. And even at the time it seemed odd to me because kneeling is almost always interpreted as a show of respect.

No, the concern is not what people will see on TikTok but what data TikTok is offshoring from their devices to servers in China. It’s a massive surveillance operation.

Now, why would you be trying to dress this up as a free speech issue, I wonder?

makeasnek OP , (edited )
@makeasnek@lemmy.ml avatar

Except they already made Oracle handle all that and they can easily legislate privacy protections without banning TikTok entirely. And, again, it is my right as a citizen to install whatever app I want even if it is spying on me, just like the rest of my apps do. I could film every second of my life and put it up on Facebook or a personal website and the Chinese government could watch it and there’s not a damned thing the US government can do about it.

cmder ,

Why don’t you install chinese wechat version ? Oh no you don’t because government like China restriced acces to it. The point is to protect the mass that doesn’t know they are being spy on, if you want to use it jist grab the apk from internet.

Sounds like your free speech hasn’t been effected then.

voracitude ,

They’ve still been offshoring all data to China in contravention of direct orders to stop. Your right to be a moron doesn’t extend to compromising national security, not sorry.

bouh ,

That’s quite ironic coming from the USA! Did the patriot act got amended recently or is this sheer hypocrisy?

voracitude ,

Ahh, “but what about”. Not “That’s not true, here’s proof”. Interesting approach, even if ineffective.

bouh ,

What the fuck?! This shit with tiltok is one of the ugliest imperialist shit the USA pulled this century, dropping the rule of trade to the full on empire mode, and you’re talking here about whataboutism?

We have a country literally stealing a company because it’s profitable and can spread influence! And you’re here like “China bad”?

Is this the strategy? Anytime something bad from the US comes up you deflect for it to be about China I guess?

voracitude ,

Oh boy, you think this is the worst thing America has done, even this week? Now I don’t know if I should tell you about the rest…

I would argue in addition to that, that it is the things you don’t see on tiktok. They censor specific content that is criticising china or portraying them in a bad light. I’m shure there is good content on the platform. But I genuinely do not understand how people can still use tiktok, same as meta platforms (though they don’t censor that much). Do they not know? Or don’t care?

voracitude ,

MystikIncarnate , to memes in It's the same fake argument every time they try to take away your rights

The “for the children” arguments are almost always misleading.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s stuff that’s genuinely “for the children”, but the vast majority of the time they’re doing something for the children it’s not.

Bluntly, the core of the argument for a lot of the online stuff for the children is reported as protecting them against would be child molestation or dangers of some similar variety. In tiktok’s case, here’s a platform that has huge potential for revenue due to its popularity, and has an established user base. I’m certain that many of the so-called upper class/elites/capitalist pigs/owners of the country, are salivating at the prospect of getting a piece of that. It was said, in the open discussion for the bill to ban tiktok, that they want to “make” tiktok “better”. Not better for the people using it, better for the people who could profit from it. Several of these shit heads have already, formally and publicly stated that they have an interest in acquiring the platform, because the bill says: tiktok will be banned unless it sells to an American owner. So the only way for tiktok to operate in America after the bill is passed, is for them to buy it.

The legislation isn’t for the children. The legislation is the people who actually hold power, making the government do a thing so they can reap the rewards.

They want to profit off of the children. Because mind raping them at a young age into a life of consumerism and spending, while earning money for that privilege, is a capitalists wet dream.
