But… Do we really expect Threads users to make their Mastodon-type tweets even show up on Reddit-style Lemmy?

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

They’d only show up if someone on the instance started subscribing to them, if I have understood how that all works correctly. And who would do such a silly thing?

Zaktor ,

And with Threads Algorithm controlling what you see, it’s not even clear that subscribing would show you them. This is a much more meaningful decision for the Mastodon instances.

billstickers ,
@billstickers@aussie.zone avatar

What are you on about? Thread’s algorithm only affects what you see in the threads app home page. If they federate fully/properly it’ll operate no different than mastodon does now.

Zaktor ,

Yes, I’m talking about what Threads users may see. It’s not clear how the Threads Algorithm will evaluate and prioritize showing Mastodon toots, but even less clear how it will prioritize message-board-like Lemmy content. It may not ever show them because it’s very possible it will either filter or devalue non-microblogging post types to fit with its native format. Whether or not they technically Federate is only half the question because they have the Algorithm deciding what you actually see.

billstickers ,
@billstickers@aussie.zone avatar

Okay. The person you replied to was talking about subscribing to a threads user in Lemmy.

dingus ,

Yeah I’m not entirely unfertstanding why defederating with them should matter on Lemmy instances. Can we even view those types of posts on here? I know you can on kbin, but I didn’t think that was even a functionality of Lemmy.

Am I the only one a bit confused as to what Threads has to do with Lemmy, beyond them both using ActivityPub…? Like, these are completely different kinds of websites, Lemmy is a Reddit clone and Threads is a Twitter clone. What purpose would federation serve?

matt ,
@matt@lemmy.world avatar

Because they use ActivityPub, both of them can potentially interact with each other (post, viewing, following, liking, boosting, etc). There’s no way to stop Threads from being able to interact fully with Lemmy if it’s something Meta wanted to implement. Mastodon can already interact with Lemmy directly by following communities, posting to communities, and interact with posts/comments. Lemmy doesn’t go the other way though because it isn’t implemented, but it could be.

Any ActivityPub software/platform/website can interact with any other ActivityPub software/platform/website if it so wants to, because the backend of things like posts/comments/communities/etc are the same across every single platform if they choose to implement them, the difference between the ActivityPub platforms is how they choose to show you information and how you interact with it.

Edit: Made a few edits for clarification.

Barbarian ,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

Technically, communities/magazines aren’t an activitypub thing. The way it’s implemented, Mastodon (for example) sees a community as just another user.

A post in that community looks like a “toot” from the community user. Comments in that thread look like replies to the toot.

matt ,
@matt@lemmy.world avatar

They are actually, communities are ActivityPub groups, the issue is that Mastodon does not implement groups (but it is soon!), so what the Lemmy group has to do is boost all the posts/comments so that people can see them in Mastodon.

Once Mastodon gets groups though, the experience should be much better.

Barbarian ,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

I had no idea! Thanks for the correction

TimewornTraveler ,

what’s Activity Pub? you’re the first person to teach me that name

matt ,
@matt@lemmy.world avatar

For a non-tech answer, it’s basically the “language” used between these websites to make them talk to each other.

If a website uses ActivityPub, it can fetch information (and send information) to other sites that are using ActivityPub in a specific way that’s designed for social media.

Another example of this would be SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) which is what e-mail uses so that different e-mail servers (outlook, yahoo, gmail, etc) can all talk to each other seamlessly.

    It’s the same guy that’s being a trollish asshole up and down this post. Only their posts have been removed, and only their posts are catching a 6:1 or higher downvote-to-upvote ratio. Seems like they’re on somebody’s payroll honestly.

    Jackolantern ,

    Why what happened there?

    dingus , (edited )

    Well I don’t know what happened exactly with that particular user but I can give some basic info on the instance. Beehaw was initially one of the major, most popular Lemmy instances (not sure if it still is or not), but in their attempt to create an ultra safe space, they decided to suddenly and without warning defederate from some of the most major instances (lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works). They seem to want to cultivate an environment akin to Tildes…they want a small userbase that is locked down to their own beliefs.

    There is nothing inherently wrong with their philosophy on how their instance should be run…but for me what left a bad taste in my mouth was the suddenness of their actions. If they were a walled garden and semi-closed off from the very beginning (a la Tildes), it would have been totally fine in my eyes imo. But to suddenly ban large swaths of users from participating without warning when they were one of the largest instances just left a very bad taste in my mouth and I don’t agree with the way they did things. Communiites like [email protected] were among the most popular communities on Lemmy, for example, and I enjoyed participating there. But then to suddenly be banned without warning because I am on a growing instance really just made me a bit frustrated with the way they were handling things.

    But as I said in my earlier comments…to use that particular slur with them is completely unwarranted imo. But I do understand people’s frustration with them. I’m frustrated too. But life will move on and different communities pop up and fill the void.

    Jackolantern ,

    Thanks for your clarification. I didn’t know that and I’ll feel the same way too. I wish we have more say on things like that. Like voting perhaps

    dingus ,

    In the end, it’s ok. Their closing off from others will only mean that other popular communities will grow and take their place. Lemmy.world has already grown immensely to take the top place in the past month. It’s been crazy watching it explode. If Beehaw wants to do things that way then I’d rather not be associated with them to begin with and not worry about things like voting with them.

    Genericusername ,

    Back when I was a kid and got my first computer, I was mostly offline except for the occasional dial-up session. I didn’t have much to do on the internet anyway and it was quite expensive. I remember being amazed the first time I have set up to meet a friend over ICQ, rather than a phone call, of being able to communicate with other computers from mine. It didn’t matter whether these computers were at a neighbors’ house, a different city or entirely different country. I was looking forward to the internet giving us ways to connect like never before. No barriers, just directly communicating and bridging cultural differences and whatnot. Little did I knew that this was just one phase, as the internet gets more and more segregated. Rather than connecting with people, it gives you the ability to filter out whatever you don’t agree with, while staying connected with those who share your beliefs. It’s like we are no longer living the same reality and can’t even agree over fundamental things. I miss the old naive days of the internet when we feared viruses and the occasional pedophile in a chat room. Nowadays it’s the possibility of spreading misinformation that could overthrow a government. Either having it going uncontrolled and unregulated, or having a private company in control of such power.

    Personally, I think that this should be the choice of an individual user rather than the platform.

    Use APK mirror to download a clean APK and then patch it with revanced. They can’t send you a compiled one because you need to use your reddit account to set up a custom app to get a unique API key that’s just for you

    CosmicSploogeDrizzle ,
    @CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

    Here is a guide I wrote previously on how I did this step by step for reddit sync. It’ll be similar for the other apps but I haven’t tried any of those.

    1. Uninstall reddit sync from your phone.
    2. Go here and download a clean redditsync apk file (click the blue “DOWNLOAD APK” Button) This is the APK I used: apkmirror.com/…/sync-for-reddit-v23-05-031718-2-a…
    3. Go here and download Revanced Manager APK file and install it. qithub.com/revanced/revanced-manager
    4. Go to reddit.com/prefs/aps and go to the bottom where it says “Create Application” (you have to login here to do this)
    5. Name it whatever you want, select “installed app” and under redirect uri, type redditsync/auth then click “create app”
    6. After you create the app, you should see it under the title “Developed Applications”. Under the name you gave it you should see a random string of numbers, letters, and symbols. This is your client ID. You will use this in the next step.
    7. Using a file manager on your phone, navigate to /sdcard/ and create a txt file titled “reddit_client_id_revanced.txt”
    8. Open the text file you just created and paste in your Client ID from step 7. Make sure it is on the top line of the text file with no spaces or indents before or after the ID.
    9. Open Revanced Manager on your phone. Select Patcher on the bottom, click “select application”, click the “storage” button on the bottom right. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the clean redditsync apk in step 2.
    10. When you select the apk file in step 10, you should see that it has selected 2 patches (change Oauth client ID and Disable ads). Click "Patch’ in the bottom right.
    11. Allow the patching to occur and read everything on the screen to check for errors. If the Oauth failed to patch, revisit step 8.
    12. Click install. Google play will likely warn you, expand the option and click “install anyway”, if it asks to scan the app, decline scanning.
    13. Launch the application, run through the setup and re-log into your account if you want.
    14. Profit
