Not sure I would call the dev of sync a rich asshole. It’s only one dude and the app is livelihood. He is very responsive to input and very good at what he does. It’s a great app. Or it was, for reddit. Currently still some growing pains but impressed how well it is considering it’s been only one month.
The decentralized nature of Lemmy means making an announcement to the greater network isn’t so easy. Perhaps the next time something like this is tried it might be worth getting instance admins of the larger instances (and smaller, but larger will have more reach obviously) to make featured posts about it beforehand to try and get the word out sooner.
They are a thing. Many manufacturers outsource some of their production to poorer countries, these factories end up starting up their own brand and produce their own vehicles alongside those of the main manufacturer (who supplies components from engines to dashboard switchgear). For example, Dacia is a knock off Renault.
Yes it is. It’s still a knock off Renault, though, in contrast with relationships like VW/Seat/Audi/Skoda which is more of a conglomerate where they all have the same base models, even if some brands are seen as more premium than the others.
For the life of me I can’t think of any other examples of budget brands right now. I remember one for Suzuki motorbikes that I’m pretty sure is a separate company that also manufactures Suzuki under license, but can’t remember the name. I’m sure there are loads out there.

Honestly. This isn’t some centralized platform. Donating at least some of the profits to the people making the app possible seems fitting. While I don’t agree with the API pricing of Reddit, I think it’s fitting that it should cost something at least, if not only to cover wage for the people working on the API
Was this the same furry who got a job at NASA? If I recall, the guy who actually got the “suck my dick i’m working for nasa” comment actually tried to get her the job back.
