Paid software absolutely has a place in the world. Evil companies producing evil software designed to build a monopoly and lock out FOSS apps do not. I don’t think Sync falls into the latter and I’m happy they’ve made the choice to be able to eat.

onescomplement ,

Just commenting this for those that may think free software is referring to price.

Free software is diametrically opposed to proprietary software, and not paid software.

Free software is free in terms of libre, not necessarily gratis. And there are corporations and individual contributors to free software that do charge for their product and maintenance of it.

Liftoff is pretty good. Has need a lot of updates in the time I’ve used it

corm ,

Liftoff freaking rules. I can view /m/all, true ALL, not related to my instance, and I can comment on any post by having a few lemmy accounts (sopuli.xyz main, lemm.ee covers most everything else, plus beehaw).

Liftoff is the only one I know of that plays nice with multiple accounts and the whole fediverse

Can’t fathom that Americans aren’t bothered enough by this

DragonTypeWyvern ,

I’ve seen Palestinian crowds chanting “Death to all Jews.” The gangrape of that reporter started by one dude in crowd deciding she’s a Jew and therefore fair game. A flash mob realizing a car is in the wrong neighborhood and immediately trying to kill them. Random rocket attacks on civilians foiled only by tech that costs 100x the weapons it defends against.

I’m not saying Israel is justified, or they aren’t on their way to outright fascism, or they don’t get some murder and torture in on their own.

I’m saying violence is a perpetual suffering machine that in this case is too late to solve, but we’re forgetting the British started it all, let’s invade England and execute the monarchy.

BanthaFood ,

Oh I think you misunderstood some things there. I see a israeli security minister that is a straight up a right wing extremist. I see that cars from Palestinians can’t enter certain regions in order for them to not get into the “wrong” neighbourhoods. And most importantly of all I see journalists killed by the IDF. Imagine you are oppressed by a apartheid state that was put onto your land by some imperialistic force, but then expands even further into “your” territorry and surpresses you. I do NOT condone the actions by the Hamas. But when Palestinians see violence as the only way out I can see why.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

And now you’re an Israeli who sees a radical Palestinian and says to themselves “well fuck these guys too then.”

You see how this works? I don’t feel like the cycle of violence is a new observation. I feel like you should already know one side being bad doesn’t make the other good.

BanthaFood ,

Yeah thing is that the gov of Israel is the source of the “cycle”. They create facts by building Israeli settlements on Palestinian territories and say “Welp guess you can’t live there any longer”, they commit warcrimes by falsely stating that they won’t attack, then airstrike, keep normal civilian Palestinians in the world’s largest open air prisons and only continue to strengthen their grip on the Palestinian people.

Israel is the only party that can actually stop the violence. If the Hamas would stop their attacks it wouldn’t mean that the Palestinians will be treated equal to Israelis by the state. That’s like saying Ukrainians should stop defending their territory cuz they only prolong the suffering that way.

And for most Israelis it’s sadly “fuck the Palestinians” and not “specifically fuck the actually radical Palestinians” thanks to rigorous propaganda.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

When Israel was broadly behaving like they didn’t have a wannabe fascist dictator obsessed with an Israeli Manifest Destiny as PM it didn’t stop Hamas either. Do you think if Netanyahu goes to prison where he belongs they’ll suddenly accept the two state solution?

Because as it is only Fatah seems willing to accept that, and they’re hemorrhaging support.

Titan ,

I’ve seen Palestinian crowds chanting “Death to all Jews.”

Yeah no shit. That’s a natural reaction to jewish people suddenly invading their country and killing their families. Try harder

DragonTypeWyvern ,

“It’s completely normal to scream for genocide. No, obviously Israel doesn’t get the same benefit in this multi-generational conflict caused by outside sources.”

And you great minds wonder why people assume being anti-Israel is just hidden anti-Semitism lol

Titan ,

You’re really asking for nuance from people who have just seen their homes and family members get blown to bits… Jfc get real

DragonTypeWyvern ,

“Nuance”

Sure bro, real big nuance to not advocate for genocide.

Not just that, but marrying one of you lowers our own life expectancy too (while extending yours - women literally give up years of their lives to take care of men so that they can gain those years themselves).. 🤦‍♀️

Uranium_Green ,

I curious how much people dying of a broken heart plays into that?

My sister whose an MD said it was a known thing that when people get up there in age, it’s not uncommon for someone to pass relatively soon (taking like within 5 years) after their partner passes.

For some people it can be days/weeks if they’re not in good health, for others it can be years.

I think it’s a similar reason to why folks will often struggle with memory after their partner passes; in lifelong partnerships people build shared memories where one half will remember some details which the other half won’t and visa versa. That and the decline in socialisation, human interaction combined with the depression and isolation that follows the passing of a partner.

I’m curious as to whether people who lose their partners whilst still relatively young (40s) experience the same decline in life expectancy, and whether them having children correlates with higher life expectancy or not in those scenarios.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure about all of that, but a couple of relevant points come to mind: men who'd lost their wives tended to die sooner after them, than women who'd lost their husbands source, also men are something like 6 times more likely to leave a sick wife than women are a sick husband (source.

So while I'm sure there's more nuance to it, the general trend seems to all point the same way - men need women a lot more than women need men, they require more care but are also quicker to discard their partner when they can no longer provide that care.

It’s more like one dev made the best user experience on lemmy, so people give him money. At least that’s the case for me.

paraphrand ,

Sync should spin up their own instance and encourage users to register there. Maybe?

Aermis ,

This. I tried lemmy. Didn’t use it until sync came out. Now that lemmy is looking for engineers I’ll donate some money.

Scrithwire ,

Same. Dedicated sync for reddit user, now that sync for reddit is dead, I’ll follow the sync dev and support him with my Dollars

This is the way. Sync for life, also Dev said he’s thinking about a 1 time payment option.

but, but… the UX!

h0rnman ,

I feel like this is legitimately more true than a lot of people think. Say what you want about the average end user, but UX is a HUGE driver with regard to adoption and user uptake. You can have the best of everything else in your application, but if the UX sucks, folks just aren’t going to use it

vitia ,

it’s the problem with most FOSS app imo. people would like them more if the overall UX was better. most proprietary apps today have shit UX because of monetisation and all the confirm pop ups for data selling, but anyone will still choose proprietary over Foss because of the abysmal UX Foss has
