It’s just a meme because when Sync launched it was all over everyone’s feeds. I don’t think as many folks are as angry about it as it seems but it’s definitely a good topic for meta memes.
The people who are actually angry tend to be FOSS advocates. I think they were assuming Sync would have a FOSS type option for users, and were surprised that wasn’t the case.
If you are not paying for Sync you are getting ads. So you are still paying (attention, data, you are the product).
Additionally proprietary software has some long term disadvantages that are not visible at first. This is why one needs to always inform people about it as they do not understand these disadvantages.
The biggest issue is that the owners of the proprietary code can change its course whenever they like it. See for example the Reddit Apollo Dev who would have sold out the community for 10 million dollars:
See his own published audio and the discussion on HN:
ah hell don’t tell me this. this is my problem. i bought my current GPU without realising it doesn’t have enough VRAM to drive ray tracing at 4K but it’s fine for everything else at 4K.
If you don't know what you're doing and have the right tools, you will break your shit.
And no, I won't tell you what they are, because if you can't figure it out it's a really bad idea (and also because I have no fucking clue, but no one need to know that part).
I would experience negative emotions about Lemmy/k in if I found a reddit thread describing my problem and the lauded solution was changed to say the user moved there. It would not make me want to switch.
Unpopular opinion: non-pro can handle the OS just fine and then some. Try out SailfishOS (unfortunately not OSS) - it’s as smooth as butter. Or UBPorts - it works great (unfortunately both Sailfish and UBPorts aren’t as polished when it comes to actual hardware support on PinePhone, but they show nicely what could be done). I don’t think I even need to mention Sxmo, which is no surprise that it works great, but its approach is definitely not for everyone.
It’s just Gnome/Plasma that are mainly developed for “big” computers and are pretty wasteful. But the situation is definitely improving.
I have sxmo on it currently but I haven’t been using it much. I was exaggerating a bit, but it is just slow/choppy enough that I can’t do my typical web research comfortably
I also have the original PinePhone and bought Pro because the original is to slow :) Pro is way faster then the original, but is still slow compared to modern phones.
Yes, the controller is pricy. I tried buying GameSir X2 Pro first. It works with the original PP, but can’t charge and play with the Pro. I talked to megi about it and he said that the issue in the gamepad. Also it doesn’t have a headphone jack. So I sold it and bought a Backbone.
