danciestlobster , to lemmyshitpost in Trump's answer today reminded me of his infamous "Nuclear" quote.

This now makes me wonder if I could call Trump and just claim to be some random famous person and he would take me seriously and go on the news about it. I honestly can’t decide what is weirder, making up a random, easily verifiably false story about lizardman calling to apologize to the ex president about his company, or the possibility that this may have actually happened.

superkret ,

It actually happened, except it wasn’t Marc Zuckerberg that called, but Jerry Zucker.

j4k3 , to asklemmy in Who is the GOATest GOAT?
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Abraham of Ur - greatest impact on the world of any schizophrenic in history with an impact that still affects billions a few millennia later.

My #1: All the no-name forgotten people that did the right thing and won’t be remembered for it. Ages of memorable names are the worst ages for average people. Like, ancient Egypt might seem impressive, except that it existed in a world that was far more egalitarian elsewhere. All that still exists came at the cost of those that lived with and built it. The true GOATest of GOATs is like the greatest of thieves; if you know their name, they weren’t the best. That is just my middle aged take.

idiomaddict ,

I’d say that everyone (except those on north sentinel island) is affected by Abraham or Ur, not just those from abrahamic religions/regions where abrahamic religions are common. Right now there’s significant global tension because of a religious conflict between abrahamic religions (which affects global trade and geopolitics), and going back over the last half millennium, Christianity was a huge driver in colonialism. Basically everywhere has a seven day week with Saturday and/or Sunday as the common free day for limited service institutions (government/banking type places) too.

It wasn’t trying to asses one’s happiness/satisfaction with their OS of choice, it was instead looking at the general life happiness of people, broken down by their OS of choice.

And I’m confused because the literally just made the third ELI5 Community on Lemmy.world but they’re suggesting someone else just work with existing mods? Pretty sure the AMA requests community was just created too.

Edit: actually I think they just took over AMA requests. . Maybe the old mod affiliated with the Lemmy World AMA community and not the Lemmy.ca one?

viking ,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

So? The idea of the fediverse is that you can have plenty of identical communities if you don’t agree with the other/main one.

threelonmusketeers ,

if you don’t agree with the other/main one

That is key. OP has not provided a clear distinction between their new community and existing communities. Unless they do, this seems like pointless fragmentation of an already small userbase.

can ,

thank you

Fragmentation is natural and it’s good that it’s relatively seemless here but the user base is still so small that working with the existing players is a much better idea. In my experience most communities on Lemmy don’t have super rigid mod rules with a hierarchy anyway. It’s likely to be way easier to work together if existing mods are active and work with the existing subscriber base.

mryessir , to asklemmy in Why do I get a strange, yet comforting feeling when I stop in quiet places

Before reading other comments I feel the need to put my thoughts out first.

Awesome how you can put your feelings into words. To me it is a sign that you are deaccelerating at some time and then realize it explictly. You may spot yourself reflecting on thr things you just done. Probably you developed to realize this emotion due to good parenting - would be my guess.

You would call this state inner balance but in English this isn’t very percise. Ausgeglichenheit explictily includes the mental state. The jucking things in your body may simply be happiness. The clearance in your mind - since you can remember it vividly - is your good attitude.

But I have no idea and just guessing from my gut. Bet there are other valid opinions and stances within here. Anyhow I wouls try to preserve it by going to a yoga class twice a month.

Very nice read, thanks.

CountVon , to linux in Edit: it's CentOS 7 (original: CentOS 3 on a self checkout?!?)
@CountVon@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s likely CentOS 7.9, which was released in Nov. 2020 and shipped with kernel version 3.10.0-1160. It’s not completely ridiculous for a one year old POS systems to have a four year old OS. Design for those systems probably started a few years ago, when CentOS 7.9 was relatively recent. For an embedded system the bias would have been toward an established and mature OS, and CentOS 8.x was likely considered “too new” at the time they were speccing these systems. Remotely upgrading between major releases would not be advisable in an embedded system. The RHEL/CentOS in-place upgrade story is… not great. There was zero support for in-place upgrade until RHEL/CentOS 7, and it’s still considered “at your own risk” (source).

9point6 ,

For many, CentOS7 is the last version of it because CentOS8 is now something different—they swapped it from being downstream from RHEL to essentially being the RHEL beta branch

skullgiver ,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

CentOS 7 was already approaching end of life a few years ago, and it’s dead now. There are reasons not to use CentOS 8 or its enterprise counterparts, but this is still very old software for a supposedly new-ish system.

I never really got why manufacturers like these went for CentOS when Ubuntu exists. You get the same level of support, with the same packages if you really want that SELinux experience, except you can actually upgrade between versions.
