After experiencing the death of two “power to the people” platforms due to profit-driven VC-backed corporate meddling, here’s hoping the third platform is the charm Lemmy & the fediverse.

argv_minus_one ,

I don’t think the Fediverse will suffer the same demise as Digg and Reddit, precisely because it’s not owned by a profit-driven VC-backed corporation, but there are a couple of other serious threats to its longevity:

  • Moderation. If the Fediverse isn’t adequately moderated, it will quickly be overrun by Nazis, pedos, and spam. That’s what killed Voat and Usenet.
  • Funding. This isn’t like IRC, where a modern server can support tens of thousands of users in its sleep. Running a system along the lines of Reddit or Twitter requires a lot of computing power, and that’s expensive. Where’s the money going to come from?

I use Navidrome. Really well made clients for anything, ability to select transcoding method (or lack thereof) based on a client, changing of following songs etc.

As someone who now lives on the west coast of Scotland I’m actually enjoying the novelty of a bit of hot dry weather.

I used to dread weather like this when I lived in London though.

rubikfrog ,
@rubikfrog@feddit.uk avatar

I’m on the east coast of Scotland, and it must have rained last night, because it’s muggy af outside. I think all the moisture is just evaporating. Walking outside is like going into our bathroom after my eldest has had one of his marathon showers.

sweetchildintime ,

Yes, I must admit it has turned a bit humid today. Still beats sideways rain though.

S10. It’s older, bought refurbished, but probably technically the “best” phone I ever had and it’s all I really need tbh.

I have been in a discussion with a colleague all day about the API controversy, instead of working. We have been talking about how Lemmy feels like what Reddit once was; a community of people that have interesting discourse around interesting topics, and not just an endless scroll of low effort posts and lower effort comments like ‘THIS!’, ‘AND MY AXE!’, or ‘I ALSO CHOOSE THIS GUYS DEAD WIFE’.

I think I have been grieving the what Reddit once was for a much longer time than I realised. Lemmy feels like home, one that I haven’t haven’t been able to visit for years.

I’ve been using Plex and Plexamp for ages. I have about two terabytes of flacs in my NAS, and Plexamp seamlessly encodes it to 128 kbps Opus when listening on a mobile network, or streams the flac as-is if on Wi-Fi. It has a good recommendation engine and a very nice UI. Worth the money, if you ask me.

One of my favourite features of my Reddit app (Sync) is “Mark Read on Scroll” and “Hide Read Posts” as an action button on the main screen. Something like that would be fantastic

NixOS. Declarative config with opt-in state is awesome.

Fellow NixOS traveller. I used Nix for work and never saw the appeal of a whole OA built around it but when I saw a tutorial with the declarative config I was instantly sold.

chadac ,

Same here. It’s made my life a whole lot easier since on previous distros, I had to depend on documenting manual hacks I had done.

Hurts , to news in Who is running this community?

I am currently the only moderator, I don’t want to spam my own posts to any community though. I would rather them develop on their own and hope the community and posts come/grow organically.

Photographer OP ,

I think at this early stage it would not be considered spam to post links, but part of building a community.

wit ,

Why are you moderating so many communities though? I checked your profile. You are moderating like 60 communities. Power trip much?

You are moderating both “Democrat” and “Republican”… lol…

And you are not even building the communities, you just created them with the sole purpose of being the mod.

Hurts ,

Because the way communities came to be moderated on Reddit created horrible echo chambers between banning people for disagreeing views or forcing their own opinions/views down people’s throats via content removal, I wanted to grab them before the same terrible mods from Reddit did.

> You are moderating both “Democrat” and “Republican”… lol…

It’s almost like you don’t have to have entirely one-sided views and can moderate content without bias and without creating hate-filled echo chambers.

If you’d like to participate in either of those feel free to ask, I’m not here to “power trip”.

Rob , to technology in Reddit Wave and the Threadiverse

I don’t think Reddit will see a huge drop in users in the short term. But hopefully this whole kerfuffle will give a big enough boost to Lemmy to kickstart its network effect.

Engagement is the most important thing to be striving for right now!

I was watching the counter yesterday as various subreddits went dark, and I started watching when it hit 1200, and woke up this morning with it being over 6000.

There was an initial hurdle to understanding how instances work together / how to search between them, but now that I have that figured out, it’s a lot easier. Most of the communities that I actively interacted with already have similar communities here on Lemmy. r/FountainPens was a big one for me.

AnarchistArtificer ,

I saw your comment and went “ooh, does that mean that there’s a fountain pen community over here”, and I clicked on your profile excitedly, but I can only see posts/comments that you’ve made within the communities I’ve already joined.

How did you (re)discover the communities that you frequented? Did you just search for them one by one? I enjoyed how organic finding new communities on Reddit often felt and I’m hoping I’m just missing that now because I don’t understand Lemmy yet.

Mindless_Enigma ,
@Mindless_Enigma@beehaw.org avatar

I can see comments and posts on their profile from communities I’m not in. Not quite sure why that isn’t the case for you. Maybe a weird quirk of how the different instances are federated. Looks like they’re talking about !fountainpens. As for finding communities, I don’t know what the UI is like outside of Beehaw, but when I go to the community list I can chose to search all instances to find communities all over.

slashzero , to startrek in I recently finished all of trek

You’ve had first complete watch of Star Trek, yes. But what about second watch?

Now you can join the rest of us in rewatching it all over and over!

I’m on season 7 of DS9 of my… how many times have I watched this? I’ve lost count. A few days ago I had to watch Tears of the Prophets. Always a sad episode to watch. Voyager is next in my queue.

astroturds OP ,

Thanks! Honestly it was hard to resist starting again immediately!

The great thing about it is there is so much to get through, by the time you’ve finished it the memories of the beginning are fading.

I’m excited to watch it all again!

slashzero ,

Believe me, I know. As I’ve said, I’ve lost count of how many times I have rewatched everything. I’m looking forward to watching Voyager again as soon as I complete season 7 of DS9.

DeportLilac ,

I never really got hooked on DS9. I only watched it in the background while doing other stuff.

Would you tell me about the things you like about it?

I would love to give it another shot and i think hearing what other people like about it would help me see its good sides!

slashzero ,

There are a lot of things to like about DS9. I’ll try to name some without spoiling anything.

One of the main ones is the fact it shows a darker more realistic side of humanity that at the time wasn’t present in other Trek. It feels a little more “grown up,” I guess?

Another is the caliber of Avery Brooks’ acting (and the rest of the cast,) but Avery Brooks in some of the episodes is just truly amazing…

  • Far Beyond the Stars
  • Past Tense
  • The Visitor

By second to third season the cast really gels and you just love every single one.

All the crap O’Brien goes through (you will finally truly understand all the memes)

Worf joins DS9 season 4 and adds even more great stories and interactions within the cast/crew

The entire overarching plot of the Dominion war and how it impacts the Federation (federation… heheh)

The whole Sisko / Emissary / Prophets story line across the entire 7 seasons and how he grows into that role

All the Holosuite episodes, but especially “Take Me Out To The Holosuite”.

All the Klingon episodes and interaction… Gowron, Martok, Worf

There are so many good characters, not just the core / Sr. Officers / main cast

GARAK… Garak is worth watching the entire 7 seasons just by himself.

Dukat, Winn Adami

Liquidator Brunt FCA

Romulans…

Ferengi… MOOOOOOOOOGIE… ROM and Nog… The Grand Nagus… and of course Quark… Little Green Men

THE DEFIANT (one hell of a ship)

To name a few… I could go on.

And of course, there are always the oddball episodes that continue to be a running joke within the DS9 community…

Move along home!

The great thing about the fediverse is that you can rage-quit 100 different instances!

astroturds , to startrek in Kira's dilemma is exactly what Voyager needed

Voyager is weird, for the first couple of seasons I wasn’t sure if I would like it much but by the end I absolutely loved it.

I thought it got a lot better towards the end of season 3 and carried on being good until the end, mainly because I got invested in seven of nine.

I don’t want to spoil anything but the shit that Janeway does is crazy. She’s mad and I love her.

I even loved the finale that everyone bitches about. It was perfect voyager weirdness.
