The audible version is also recommended. Mad props to all the folks who made the audio book.

It's so good. Once the other character shows up and you hear him talking and Grace starts making sense out of what he's saying it's like the book just lights up. That was a really nice touch.

Yes how I read (listen) to the novel 3 times so far. Excellent novel. I love Rocky and the whole novel is wonderful.

I enjoyed how it built up slowly it was those extra touches that made the difference.

I really should read the physical book to see the difference.

But is is a novel I will enjoy over and over again no different than listening or reading The Martian over and over again.

essteeyou ,

Best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. It adds stuff that the book surely can’t manage.

ritswd , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

I don’t hate it, but every time now that I get linked to a Reddit post, I look at the comments, and every time I get a little more shocked at the amount of low-value, hateful comments over there compared to here.

In other words, I don’t hate it, but I feel like it hates me.

net00 , to reddit in Does anyone regret deleting their Reddit account?

Nah, when I think whether it was worth it overwriting 10+ years worth of content in Reddit I just look over and see them come up with yet another shit move. It instantly validates getting off that sinking ship.

After fucking up API access they decided to delete all PMs older than 2023, get rid of awards/gold, and add more dark patterns to force people to their garbage apps.

Seems now that they’re gonna add “tipping” as if it was a disgusting instagram clone with ‘content creators’

They’re quickly tearing down everything that made Reddit unique at all. They don’t want a discussion board, they want a tiktok clone or whatever.

DelvianSeek , to showerthoughts in If two children are conceived on the same day but one is born prematurely, both children are technically the same age.

No they are not. Birthdays are calculated from the day of birth, hence birthdays. And zygotes are not yet people, no matter what the forced-birthers tell you.

Thoughts about Grace’s sacrifical acts:

spoilerI think there’s a big difference between sacrificing yourself for unknown others, when someone else could potentially do it (or you can convince yourself of that) and knowing that someone you know and care about personally WILL DIE, and NO ONE else can do anything about it. Grace was always a good person, it’s the personal stakes that changed.

capybeby OP ,

spoilerOh I definitely agree the Grace is a good person the whole time. He works so hard on this project mostly because of his kids. He wants them to have a future. But going on the Hail Mary was the way to save the kids. He tried to say someone else could do it but conceded when Scott pointed out how bullshit that was. And when push came to shove he said “Okay, it’s true! I’m afraid! I don’t want to die! I worked my ass off on this project and I deserve to live!” (Pg 392) But even though he worked his ass off to save earth and to find a solution, he decided that Rocky deserves to live, not him.

So I agree with your overall point, but I think Grace changed a lot too.

Moc OP , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Does anyone know how to solve incorrect_login when logging into Lemmy?

Interestingly, whenever I click the Verify Email URL in my email, it goes to a page that only has a header: “Verify Email”.

The URL endpoint responsible for validating the email also responds with a 404:

https://lemmy.world/api/v3/user/verify_email

Response body:

{"error":"token_not_found"}

Issue persists across devices and browsers (Safari, Firefox, Chromium)

Moc OP ,

So I just tested this on desktop; I can log in with my email address but not my username. This is a huge issue, because the apps only accept username as a login.

Never thought I’d get emotionally invested and attached to a creature as alien as Rocky. I thoroughly enjoyed in the book and it’s my favorite out of the three Weir books I’ve read.

bui , to books in How do you decide when to give up on a book?

If I’m reading a book, I normally give it a couple of chapters. If I don’t like the style of writing or the story isn’t engaging, it’s very unlikely that it will get better later on.

If I’m listening to an audiobook, I give it a lot longer because I’m usually doing something else while listening and there’s less effort required to progress.

A recent exception is The Power. I read that until 49% because it was okay. Somewhat interesting but I just didn’t care about the characters and I hated the writing style. I thought I should like it more because it was a bestseller and turned into a TV show. I got around to reading reviews which confirmed that it wasn’t just me who didn’t get it and I’m so glad I stopped. I should’ve dropped it after two chapters.

System76 makes their own distro called PopOS. Their laptops right now are rebadged, but I’m sure they support them well. They are in the process of designing their own and I’m waiting to see how it compares to something like Framework.

Skiptrace ,

PopOS kinda sucks nards. Don’t use it.

pkulak ,

You absolutely don’t have to. They will support you no matter what distro you have. All their custom bits are in the AUR and Nix, for example.

It’s a great book for sure. Two things I really liked are

spoilerI haven’t read a good alien contact book in a long time, so I really enjoyed that part. Also, the whole arc of “I must have been convinced to do the right thing because I’m here - I guess I’m a good guy, and Rocky did the same.” Was really powerful.

And, of course, Weir does a really good job with hard SF, keeping things anchored and believable.

capybeby OP ,

Yes I loved that arc! I loved that he does prove it true in the end.

flyingjake , to books in Just read Project Hail Mary

I enjoyed it, I read the Martian before it got big and turned into a movie. I thought it might be a one hit wonder when Hail Mary came out and was prepared for disappointed but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

For me it was follow liberally and go down the rabbit holes of peoples reblogs to find more.
