Scribbd , to selfhosted in Podman is awesome—and totally frustrating

I work somewhere that doesn’t have licensing with Docker Inc. And I work on a Mac. With Docker desktop out of the picture, I got some experience with the alternatives. I know this post is about the native implementation and not the VM one, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents:

Alternatives run by me: Podman, Rancher Desktop, Finch

Results:

  • Podman uses a lot more energy on idle than Finch and Rancher. On AVG 4 more Wats on an M1. (Normal idle is about 5W, so 9 almost doubles it cutting greatly in my battery life)
  • Podman and Finch are not compatible with some tools that expect a full docker sock. In my case the AWS CDK and SAM CLI have issues. (Which is fun as Finch is also made by AWS)
  • Finch does not offer a sock at all
  • Finch requires you to recreate the full VM when updated.
  • If you really want to have a drop-in replacement for Docker Desktop, use Rancher Desktop. Rancher lacks in UI and the extension feature. But I never had issues with the sock, as I can run it with containerd.
  • Finch has no UI
  • Podman’s VM has clock drift if you put your machine in sleep. Only solution I found is to reboot the podman VM.
  • Podman allows you to log in the VM with a command. I haven’t found a way on the others.

The clock drift issue has been resolved recently: github.com/containers/podman/issues/11541

Scribbd ,

That is awesome. I prefer podman, despite what my list might suggest.

I mean at least in Europe when you use a bidet you use soap and then still dry a few times with tp. These contraptions are good to soften the ass crud but you’ll still need to wipe it off with tp.

One thing to add, that haven’t been thought to me in the CPR course.

It’s fucking exhausting and you will get tired very soon. The training dummy doesn’t require nowhere near as much force as a real person. To give you an example, it’s quite common to crack or break a rib of the CPR recipient even if CPR is done right. That’s how much force you have to use. Without the required force, your pushes won’t reach the heart.

Make sure there is someone else who knows how to do CPR or at least is looking how you’re doing it and can repeat that or follow your commands once you switch.

I’ve only had to give someone CPR once and I haven’t been as tired in my whole life. No way the “I’ve been giving him CPR for 30 minutes…” You see on a TV screen is real. I felt like I’ll need CPR myself after 3 minutes.

You should also know that technically only the piece marked as genuine leather needs to actually be genuine leather. If you buy something made with multiple pieces, the rest could be made from any material so long as that one piece is genuine.

RedClouds ,

“Made with natural and artificial flavors”… So just… made with artificial flavors then…

CountZero ,

You know what’s cool about “natural flavors”? They just have to be found in nature to call them that. They can be synthesized in a lab and still be a “natural flavor.”

P.S. don’t fall for the naturalistic fallacy. This comment is about tricky vocabulary used by the food industry. Whether or not a chemical is found in nature has nothing to do with whether it is good or bad for you. Arsenic is natural.

ShadyGrove ,

Yup! “All Natural” is just a marketing term, there’s no regulations behind it. USDA Organic is a real thing though, farms need to be organic for 7 years to be labeled that, if I recall correctly at least

zephyr , to youshouldknow in YSK - X percent of Y is equal to Y percent of X. So, if you want to find out what 7% of 50 is, you could instead find out what 50% of 7 is, which is 3.5. This means that 7% of 50 is also equal to 3.5.

Percentage is just a fancy form of decimal point. I just multiply them together then move decimal digit to the left twice.

This is true for quite a few other things as well. For instance, “hertz” really just means “per second”. However, it’s easier to write/type “Hz” instead of “s^-1”.

Behind the Bastards, a deep dive into the various shit people of history. Episode one is Saddam Hussein: Erotic Novelist.

There’s nearly 700 episodes, and I’ve yet to run tio a dud. Loads of great guests. My only gripe is that it’s a touch Amerocentric, but other than that I’d recommend it to basically anyone. Not kid friendly, in case that wasn’t obvious.

sombrero , to gaming in PC Games to play in local co-op?

I was a bit confused when you said local co-op. It implies 2 computers on the same local network(connected to the same router, no internet connection required). I think the term you’re looking for is split screen gaming.

When I looked at pictures of Spelunky games like Clonk and Liero popped into mind, I think there are options for split screen multiplayer in those games, they’re old school PvP games.

ono ,

My friends call that LAN play or LAN co-op. To me, local co-op has always been a more general phrase, covering all of the above.

sphere_au , to technology in Lemmy needs two things to be successful

I think these are “nice to have” features rather than absolutely essential, but:

For 1. I could deal with just being able to download my list of subscriptions and upload it to another server. That’s the only bit that’s really slow to copy over by hand.

For 2. I think the main thing that really would benefit is the ability to search all active communities on all servers. The way it is now is alright if there are only half a dozen really active instances whose communities I might be interested in, but it doesn’t scale if there are hundreds of servers to check out. Probably the more important of the two IMHO in the long run.

Sinfaen ,

Being able to download your own data would be a start

Honestly, I thought I was pretty clean before getting a bidet, but since getting one I can never go back without feeling gross. It’s weird what we can get used to, when that’s just how you’ve done things your whole life.
