kubok , to android in How does everyone feel about Motorola phones?

I have a four year old Motorola One. The only gripe I have with it , is the poor support for alternative smartphone OS-es.

LaughingFox ,
@LaughingFox@lemmy.world avatar

I, too, am using the Motorola One 5G, and really aside from updates, I have no complaints, except the phone trips out once in a while or has weird screen glitches on occasion. Great phone though. Hoping to upgrade to one of the Edge series soon.

You shoulda just secretly did a few orders everyday and then took 3 hours off. If they don’t appreciate productivity, take it as a sign that you should slow down and chill.

sleepyducky OP ,

Couldn’t do that, I tried, but being a large open space office with almost 40 people in there. So everyone was in everyone’s business.

gibbedygook ,

Oh god i hate open offices.

corsicanguppy ,

Here’s something for HR:

Open-plan offices leave women subject to sexism at work, research suggests

cbc.ca/…/open-plan-offices-leave-women-subject-to…

or archive.ph/bYJHB

Good office design and planning — such as considering sight lines, team adjacency, private versus public space — can mitigate privacy issues

And this statement ignores the difference between mitigating an issue and just not causing the issue to begin with.

Do you think podman could replace Docker Desktop on my Dev machine? Its become so bloated…

witten OP ,

I honestly don’t have any experience with Docker Desktop. Maybe someone else here can weigh in.

EDIT: There is this: podman-desktop.io

lightree , to selfhosted in Podman is awesome—and totally frustrating

had a knowledge sharing meeting at work recently on container security. the guy was using podman like a docker cli, but it said "this is only an emulation of docker" - is there any downsides to running podman like this? im very familiar with docker on the command line

loren ,

I think calling it an emulation downplays podman. Docker and podman are both container runtimes. Docker came first and is known synonymously with containers, whereas podman is newer and attempts to fix docker’s problems.

One outcome of this is podman chose to match docker’s cli very closely so nobody needs to learn a new cli. You can even put podman on the docker socket so “docker [command]” runs with podman.

No rain here as of yet, and I don't mean to be miserable about the sun but we really need some rain!

Also off to the library to do crafts and get books out this morning, not sure what else today brings maybe prep for father's day tomorrow.

What are you up to?

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Ooh what kind of crafts? Our library used to have a knit and natter, but it only happened at like 10am on a Wednesday so effectively banned working-age folks. And now even that is gone. Bah.

Ni ,
@Ni@kbin.social avatar

It's a shame when there aren't outside of working time options. I often wonder when we are supposed to engage with all this stuff?

We have a kids craft on a Saturday at the library, my kid is currently making a paper fish. We take a lot of paper craft stuff home with us!

You might be able to find a knit and natter group on Facebook, I know there are some around us that do the post box toppers.

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Honestly I made one friend through Ravelry years ago, and that seems to be about it around here in terms of crafters who are under retirement age. Such is life in small towns! I think there is a lot more stuff for young kids on a weekend though, basically the demographic here is “parents” and “old people” and if you’re neither you’re out of luck!

At least there’s online though. I’m loving seeing all the new crafty communities popping up on here, just hope they can get enough content to keep going 🤞

Ni ,
@Ni@kbin.social avatar

You are absolutely right it does seem that more stuff is either parent or retirement age focused!

Have you found many good craft communities on the fediverse? I haven't seen much creative content on kbin so far?

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Not sure what you’re into but…deep breath…you asked for it.

!lemmy_stitch (direct link) is a brand new one for cross stitch & embroidery, needs more people to join!

!crochet (direct link) is the most active crochet one I’ve found, some nice convos happening in there already.

!knitting (direct link) again there’s a few but this seems most active.

For sewing there seem to be two trying to get off the ground but neither seem super active. I’ll probably just pick one at random and start posting in it if that doesn’t change but they’re !sewing (direct link) and !sewing (direct link)

!leathercraft (direct link) isn’t something I do personally but I do enjoy perving over their projects anyway.

Erm…if I find any more I’ll come back and update this lol. Kind of one a one-woman mission to build a good list, then hopefully convince the various mods to sticky it so people who find one of these places can then find all the others too.

(Also p.s. I don’t know how to format these links for Kbin so sorry if they don’t work. But hopefully I’ve made it a bit easier for any other Lemmings who stumble across this comment.)

Ni ,
@Ni@kbin.social avatar

Oh my god, thank you for such a comprehensive list! I will be checking out each and every one of them a little later on.

I feel like everyone really t needs to pull together and try and build all these communities to get this whole place rolling. Thriving more niche communities are vital to that.

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Yep absolutely! I can’t commit to running one myself but can at least do my part by being a patient explorer (and insufferable shill) of new communities lol.

ElSapo , to nostupidquestions in How do identical communities work on Lemmy?

Communities with the same name across different instances are not merged, and the way they are referenced will be different. So, the location of lemmy.world/c/Music can also be referenced as !music while instead the Music at serverB.whatever be can be referenced as [email protected] .

Spacecraft OP ,

So when I see posts from a @[email protected] in lemmy.world/c/music, they had to visit lemmy.world and create a post in the music community here?

ulu_mulu ,
@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world avatar

Not really, if someone from some-server join a .world community, that community is “copied” (cached) on some-server for all some-server users to use.

What happens is that people on some-server modify their local copy, then the copy is merged into the original on lemmy.world.

jpgr , to nostupidquestions in I personally dont but why do you think ppl care so much about being downvoted on internet chat forums?

When used correctly (for irrelevant/trolling/toxic comments etc., not for disagreement) it is useful as a community filter.

metaStatic ,

it has literally never been used correctly and if you believe otherwise I'll downvote you.

reflex ,
@reflex@kbin.social avatar

Been testing Kbin and Tildes, and I like the way Tildes does it. There are upvotes, no downvotes. Instead, there are also labels that can be applied like joke and off-topic. There's even an analogue of gilding via an exemplary label which has an 8-hour cool down and requires typing a brief reason.

Tildes wants to encourage longer, thoughtful discussion so jokes get pushed to the bottom by default. Currently no option to custom sort that I could see if, for example, you want to read funny comments instead—and that's fine.

Point is, a better system than upvotes/downvotes would be nice as a general feature for aggregators going forward.

Iconoclast , to piracy in oh thank god i found you guys

I‘m glad to have you too, the Reddit behaviour was making me nauseous and I was worried I couldn‘t find a good community to replace it. Then I discovered this instance and explored Lemmy a bit further, made some more accounts elsewhere and jumped around and it’s NICE! So excited to be here.

If you find juggling multiple accounts to be a bit of a hassle, my recent chapter about subscriptions might be of interest. In short though: you can use one account to access all of Lemmy, but there’s a few specific steps you need to follow to subscribe to other communities on external servers.

tallwookie , to nostupidquestions in I personally dont but why do you think ppl care so much about being downvoted on internet chat forums?
@tallwookie@lemmy.world avatar

fake internet points dont matter at an individual level on this platform - up/down votes on posts affect the weight metric about how they get displayed in the feed but dont really seem to matter too much either.

as others have said, it’s a mental/cognitive thing - but it’s also social to the extent that each online community has its own social rules, some unspoken, that everyone mindlessly obeys because if you dont you’ll get shadowbanned/silenced by power tripping moderators.

arkcom ,

on kbin we have reputation, which is nearly impossible to keep positive, because it counts downvotes but not upvotes. They are working on fixing it though.

LeafyPasserine ,
@LeafyPasserine@kbin.social avatar

@arkcom Yeah it's so odd that they count Boosts instead of Upvotes. Why do we need two??

cowvin ,

Boosts are like retweets and Upvotes are like likes. On a threaded discussion format like this, boosts are kind of pointless, so nobody uses them.

Duality , to nostupidquestions in I personally dont but why do you think ppl care so much about being downvoted on internet chat forums?

People don’t like rejection. Evolutionarily rejection from peers/society means danger. Even if it’s not dangerous now, the brain (especially the amygdala) reacts the same. People get anxious, defensive, etc. It takes time and reflection to accept that maybe what you said was wrong or socially unacceptable. Internet is too fast to reflect, it’s much easier to respond in anger and then forget it all.

Just_A_Human ,

Why specifically the amygdala? I would’ve assumed it’d originate in older parts of the brain

Duality ,

It’s the emotion center for the brain, especially negative emotions like fear and anxiety. Older parts are often “responsible” for keeping you alive, so breathing, heart beating, etc.

ThunderQuack , to nostupidquestions in I personally dont but why do you think ppl care so much about being downvoted on internet chat forums?

It’s a validation thing if not a competitive thing. They want/need the most points or to feel like there’s support for their views. Just a bit of sociology
