Fellow RIFugee here moving in to the Fediverse. After 8 years, the moment I opened RIF and could no longer refresh my feed, it felt like the end of a chapter of my life. With every ending comes with new beginnings, so here’s to Lemmy and the Fediverse!
We’re rural, and often postman and couriers are the only people we see day to day, so we build a good relationship with them. It’s a 20 minute trip to the closest postbox, so they often pick up our outgoing parcels too (I sell stuff through ebay so there’s quite a few)
Two years ago our postie of 12 years said he was leaving because there wasn’t enough staff, deadlines were too tight and management wasn’t coping well. Local POs closing, even our regional sorting office closed and went elsewhere. Deliveries were missed, booked pickups too. The worst was when they came to collect a parcel, but it had been collected the day before. Instead they took one clearly marked “Hermes” from outside our house and only having the Hermes label, which was a £90 car heater I’d just sold. I immediately rang the number but despite the lady trying to trace him down, it vanished. If I hadn’t had caught him on cctv I’d never have known where it had gone. I lost all that money, including the Hermes fee.
We had a few random postmen since then, changing every week, but now have settled down to a regular one and we’re lucky in that he’s one of the great ones who goes out of his way to be helpful. He’s also a biker so we have have that in common too.
Because on my phone, using Firefox, the mobile experience isn’t too great. It’s slow, sometimes the screen just blanks out and I need to reload, and sometimes it rapid-fires new posts on the top of the page which makes it impossible to click anything
My friend group is smaller, but we’re closer. For example, seeing my best friend of 30 years today. We’ve been to each others weddings, our children’s weddings and some tough times. Even when we haven’t seen each other for a while, there’s no break. Just pour a coffee, sit down and decide what stupid shit we’re gonna do today.
Same. In our 50’s. Spending the weekend visiting our BFFs. We get together 3-4x/year. Coffee usually turns to whiskey fairly early so we often fall asleep before things get too stupid.
This is something I've been struggling with too. I love my partner, but they can't be my only source of social interaction. We each have our own lives in addition to what we share with each other.
It's been very uncomfortable, but I've been forcing myself to try to engage with people that I share hobbies with. Think about the things you like doing and then seek out those groups.
One of the advantages of trying to make friends as an adult is that, people are generally welcoming. If they aren't, it's probably not a group of people you want to spend your time with anyway.
My 4 year old learned about Pokémon Go recently I started playing it again after about 4 year hiatus, haha I stopped playing about the time she was born 🤣
Edit: in essence it search works for searching for a community, but not an instance as a whole; I couldn’t just search wefwef.app for mander.xyz and see all of its communities listed, but I can search for a community from it and it will come up
This will show you the posts from mander.xyz as if you’re on that instance
Though I think these will leave not signed into your lemmy.world account, so I guess find the communities you like the look of and search it from your normal wefwef.app instance
It’s not only bloat. From what I remember I think it’s also swap space, probably also some space for caching and some other things. E.g. I have 42GB of system space out of 256 on my Galaxy S21, and it’s definitely not all bloat apps.
Currently using wefwef and Memmy to browse lemmy via mobile. Wefwef feels closest to Apollo but Memmy has a better interface.
Also subbed to Winston on Reddit, the dev is actively responding to suggestions and aiming to release an app as close as possible like Apollo for browsing reddit. Then of course there’s also Narwhal.
I can’t speak for Apollo but I used RIF and old.Reddit
I work with a bunch of techies with various opinions on this; he said I like “an app that looks like it was from 10 years ago”, which was meant to be an insult, but I think is actually the point: it was text-first, list view, “get out of your way” to enjoy the content.
I don’t like advertising pretending to be content.
I don’t like the integrations that pushed paid crap like their version of Bitcoin.
And I am here because even though Reddit is still active, it’s clear that the ship is being sailed solely by momentum at this point and the company is, well, only going up be able to do so much until they can’t pay what little staff they have. The way the mods and app developers were treated this month was the lowest of the low and sealed my decision.
