Star Trek fandom is OLD. And a lot of the old fans go back to the BBS and email list days. They’ve/we’ve weathered plenty of technology changes.
This is in fact the one sub I am NOT surprised is so active. It’s one part Old Fandom, and one part the new shows coming out being pretty good, making the fandom alive and kicking instead of moribund and dead.
I can’t say they were always as civil as they might be. Even in the late 80s with laserprint copies in vogue, there were folks who thought shouting everything in AllCaps was the way to get their message across.
@BROMETHIUS you may wish to check the pinned message at the top of this community.
This instance was created by the senior mods of r/startrek and r/DaystromInstitute. The original mod of r/startrek is modding here. They’re hoping to attract some of the other Star Trek subreddits to join. The invitations have been made. So far, they’ve decided to keep the number of communities to three in order to let the conversations get going.
Tried “Memmy” before and right now I like Thunder a bit more. The UI looks cleaner to me, it works well. Good job, I have put it on my phone where I used to have Apollo.
I’m trying it now too, thanks for the comment, but if you’re an ex-Apollo like me, I highly recommend giving a try to Wefwef.app. It’s a web app but you can install it on your screen and looks almost identical to Apollo and feels very much like home. I discovered it today thanks to another comment and I can’t believe this exists.
I have just read about it in a different comment as well, tried it and it does feel a bit like coming home. Thank you for recommending it to me as well, it’s wonderful to see that it gets easier and easier to take part here!
They should have given you the actual data, not the permalinks to the data. If you're in a jurisdiction that requires by law that they need to make your data available, then they're in violation of that. Consider taking legal action.
As for saving the data, that's mostly trivial for anyone who knows how to write simple scrapping code. But again, this shouldn't be needed, as the data itself should have been provided, not links.
Main reason is advertising. On third party app we don’t see ads. I used Apollo and there where no adds. Also there was to ticktok scrolling stuff like in official app. I did not use non official YouTube apps but I think it’s similar case. Also if you use there apps they can serve you content in a way that is more engaging like instagram is to get you even more addicted to the platform. Hope I explained it well, let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂
Hopefully we can help create new communities on Lemmy. Nothing will truly replace Reddit but new groups will be created and over time they will become great.
Fellow RIFugee here moving in to the Fediverse. After 8 years, the moment I opened RIF and could no longer refresh my feed, it felt like the end of a chapter of my life. With every ending comes with new beginnings, so here’s to Lemmy and the Fediverse!
We’re rural, and often postman and couriers are the only people we see day to day, so we build a good relationship with them. It’s a 20 minute trip to the closest postbox, so they often pick up our outgoing parcels too (I sell stuff through ebay so there’s quite a few)
Two years ago our postie of 12 years said he was leaving because there wasn’t enough staff, deadlines were too tight and management wasn’t coping well. Local POs closing, even our regional sorting office closed and went elsewhere. Deliveries were missed, booked pickups too. The worst was when they came to collect a parcel, but it had been collected the day before. Instead they took one clearly marked “Hermes” from outside our house and only having the Hermes label, which was a £90 car heater I’d just sold. I immediately rang the number but despite the lady trying to trace him down, it vanished. If I hadn’t had caught him on cctv I’d never have known where it had gone. I lost all that money, including the Hermes fee.
We had a few random postmen since then, changing every week, but now have settled down to a regular one and we’re lucky in that he’s one of the great ones who goes out of his way to be helpful. He’s also a biker so we have have that in common too.
Because on my phone, using Firefox, the mobile experience isn’t too great. It’s slow, sometimes the screen just blanks out and I need to reload, and sometimes it rapid-fires new posts on the top of the page which makes it impossible to click anything
My friend group is smaller, but we’re closer. For example, seeing my best friend of 30 years today. We’ve been to each others weddings, our children’s weddings and some tough times. Even when we haven’t seen each other for a while, there’s no break. Just pour a coffee, sit down and decide what stupid shit we’re gonna do today.
Same. In our 50’s. Spending the weekend visiting our BFFs. We get together 3-4x/year. Coffee usually turns to whiskey fairly early so we often fall asleep before things get too stupid.
This is something I've been struggling with too. I love my partner, but they can't be my only source of social interaction. We each have our own lives in addition to what we share with each other.
It's been very uncomfortable, but I've been forcing myself to try to engage with people that I share hobbies with. Think about the things you like doing and then seek out those groups.
One of the advantages of trying to make friends as an adult is that, people are generally welcoming. If they aren't, it's probably not a group of people you want to spend your time with anyway.
