Aceticon , (edited ) to asklemmy in What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?

That would be Kodi which I now use on a Mini-PC with Lubunto which has replaced my TV Box and my Media Player (plus that Mini-PC also replaces a bunch of other things and even added some new things).

Before I went down a rabbit whole of trying to replace my really old Asus Media Player (which was so old that its remote was broken and I replaced it with my own custom electronics + software solution so that I could remote control that Media Player from an Android app I made running on my tablet) which eventually ended up with Kodi on a Linux Mini-PC also replacing my TV box, I had no idea Kodi even existed and was just using the old Media Player to browse directories with video files in a remote share (hosted on a hacked NAS on my router, a functionality which is now on that Mini-PC which even supports a newer and much faster SMB protocol) using a file browser user interface to play those files.

It was quite the leap from that early 00s file browser interface to chose files to play on TV to a modern “media library” interface covering all sorts of media including live TV (why it ended up also replacing my TV box).

I want to like Kodi, but Jellyfin just has a less obtrusive interface

So I do still swear and curse…

But now I do it literally.

captainlezbian , to asklemmy in What's your stance on "donating" blood plasma?

I donated blood for many years, starting the first day I was allowed (mom took me). I’ve been an organ donor from the day I was able and am loud about that. And for a few months after college I sold plasma for money. It definitely felt scummy, but I think it’s ultimately a good thing, though it is selling part of your body to a for profit company at a rate that’s pretty bad. So the cons are really that it definitely feels seedier than whole blood donation and that the phlebotomists are worse. I can’t donate blood anymore because they gave me a track mark and I can’t risk my other elbow’s veinous access.

But it got me through a rough time

CIPP. Its used to manage multiple office 365 tenants so its not really useful to anyone outside of managed service providers. it makes doing shit in 365 wayyy easier than using the Microsoft portal.

I enjoy the exercise of trying to think ahead of the words coming out of my mouth so I can speak more concisely and clearly. It’s the same reason I do calligraphy.

OutlierBlue ,

If you can do calligraphy ahead of the words coming out of your mouth then I am thoroughly impressed.

No calligraphy is for writing slowly and deliberately. It has helped me immeasurably

All cancer is toxin exposure. The cure has been known for a long time, no toxin exposure.

Butt…families of cancer victims vote for pollution and smoke, etc.

Lost a family member to cancer in a cancer cluster around a church-owned industrial plant.

When the cases piled up, they did like Jesus woukd do and moved to another state. Didn’t have money for raises for years because working for the Lord, but did hire consultants to fire employees and shut the plant down.

Keep believing us, we care, and we’re working on a cure until federal funding and charities run out of money.

Sponsored by your friends in the petrochemical industry.

Zoboomafoo , (edited )

As a society we are choosing to have industry that creates cancers. If we chose to stop doing that, maybe instead we could spend our time appreciating the beauty of each beetle.

Fridgeratr ,

You can get skin cancer from sun exposure, does that mean the sun is a toxin? 🤔

mortemtyrannis , (edited )

Yeah I don’t know about the veracity of the statement ‘all cancer is toxin exposure’ you got a source to back that claim up?

The_v ,

Cancer is a DNA mutation. Those mutations can be hereditary, random chance, or environmentally caused.

aaaaace ,

The mutations can be from that list, but mostly in our current world it’s exposure to toxins.

Another toxin is media paving over real causes and making the story monetise curing.

No, a liberal, ie someone who espouses liberalism, the free market capitalist ideology. Libertarians are anti-state liberals.

bruhsoulz , (edited ) to linux in Do you know if it's possible to run a second session in a window?
@bruhsoulz@lemmy.ml avatar

i do not think it is possible, but perhaps the closest thing u can get is virtualbox or qemu/kvm/virtmanager with shared folders, i believe that allows you to passthrough files between guest and host. (shared folders allow you to copy paste something on ur host into them and have them appear in the guest, but dont think i used them before, at least not extensively, so you might have to look into them to check if this advice helps you)

Several solutions have already been posted in here, please do not try to act authoritative when you don’t know the answer. We already saw you asked what VNC even is…

@bruhsoulz@lemmy.ml avatar

The irony is insane. “Act authoritative” even tho I literally didn’t claim to know anything for certain (I do not -think-, perhaps, I believe). Also as other gentleman pointed out, no other comment was there when I tried to help. I asked about vnc -after- I made my initial comment, because a few minutes after other people started pitching in with more accurate and relevant information. I feared the post would go on to have no responses so I tried to pitch in; you don’t have to know everything about everything in order to try and help someone out, all I did was provide my take on the matter, which is better than ignoring the question, regardless of how fruitful or fruitless what I had to say was. People like you are why noobs are afraid if dipping their toes in more technical areas such as linux, and get scared off by smartass supremacists that like to spoil things for no good reason. Sincere, seek help. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Enkers , (edited ) to linux in Do you know if it's possible to run a second session in a window?

I’d imagine you could run a VNC server, and then just login from the same PC. This kinda what you’re looking for?

There are some limitations, like I don’t think hardware acceleration would work, for example.

Edit: I did a little searching for “nested x-session” and found out that there is a specific x11 program to do exactly what you want called xephyr. There’s also a brief guide on the arch wiki.

Max_P ,
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

It’s a lot easier with Wayland and hardware acceleration works, see my solution. It does a proper login session and starts the whole DE exactly the same way as if you logged in from a tty too so everything just works as expected there. Wayland devs use that a lot for testing and development so it’s quite well supported overall.
