KLISHDFSDF , to asklemmy in What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?
@KLISHDFSDF@lemmy.ml avatar

Notesnook.

I was previously using Obsidian, which is great! but didn’t like that it was closed source. I then went on to try various options [0] but none of them felt “right”. I eventually found notesnook and it hit everything I was looking for [1]. It’s only gotten better in the last year I started using it and just recently they introduced the ability to host your own sync server, which is one of the requirements it didn’t initially make, but was on their roadmap.

[0] Obsidian, Standard Notes, OneDrive, VSCode with addons, Joplin, Google Keep, Simple Notes, Crypt.ee, CryptPad (more of a collabroation suite, which I actually really like, but it did not fit the bill of a notes app), vim with addons, Logseq, Zettlr, etc.

[1] Requirements in no particular order:

  • Open source client and server.
  • Cross-platform availability as I use Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android.
  • Cross-platform feature parity.
  • Doesn’t fight me over how notes should be taken - looking at Logseq’s lack of organization.
  • Easy notes syncing.
  • End-to-end encryption (E2EE). It’s about to be 2025, if the tools you’re picking up aren’t E2EE, you’re letting unknown strangers access your data and resell it. It doesn’t matter what their privacy policy says as that can always change and/or they can get compromised/compelled to expose your data.
  • Ability to publish notes.
  • Decent UX.

The Alamo’s a story of American expansionism by an ungrateful group of settlers welcomed by Mexico.

It’s interesting how interconnected those points are.

Generative A"I" drives GPU prices up. NVidia now cares more about it than about graphics. AMD feels no pressure to improve GPUs.

Stagnant hardware means that game studios, who used to rely on “our game currently runs like shit but future hardware will handle it” and similar assumptions get wrecked. And gen A"I" hits them directly due to FOMO + corporates buying trends without understanding how the underlying tech works, so wasting talent by firing people under the hopes that A"I" can replace it.

Large game companies are also suffering due to their investment on the mobile market. A good example of is Ishihara; sure, Nintendo simply ignored his views on phones replacing consoles, but how many game company CEOs thought the same and rolled with it?

I’m predicting that everything will go down once it becomes common knowledge that LLMs and diffusion models are 20% actual usage, 80% bubble.

How is national socialism a mask for capitalism?

hungryphrog ,

national ‘socialism’ my fucking ass

joyhunter ,

You can’t actually combine Nationalism and Socialism as Socialism is directly opposed to Nationalism. Mussolini went over this many times how “It is an error of Socialism to exclude Nationalism”(paraphrased), the Socialist aspect is reduced to the future where the “others” have been eradicated, which will never actually happen as Hitler went from “There are 5 white races” to “All Mediterraneans have been negrified” and I’ve no doubt he would eventually consider all slavs to be “mongolized”.

It’s not dead though, it’s still linked to everywhere, from big news to niche communities because it still has that critical mass and inertia.

And I have to be cynical of the Fediverse, but realistically, what replaces it, at least here in the US? Discord? No, thanks, I’d at least rather have information be public.

I’m speaking as someone who has never used Twitter, but I can’t ignore it, as much as I’d like to.

If you think X is getting linked at anything approaching the level Twitter was back in the day ... where have you been? That platform is slowly bleeding out his billions of investment (well, some of his, but lots of other peoples' money I don't mind seeing burn, either)...

brucethemoose ,

It’s still everywhere in my news/internet diet.

It’s bleeding, for sure, but it’s big. Its gone bad. But I think its premature to say its collapse is a good thing, because it just won’t go away.

I’m so tired of this shit. I don’t care if people can’t handle their shit. Their problem, not mine. If I want to gamble I can gamble. I don’t care if some shitty parent is letting their kids gamble. Nanny state bullshit.

9 times out of 10 I prefer reading, but there’s some videos that are absolutely worth watching over reading. That said, I don’t really want to see talking heads. And I think people should include the channel/creator name in the title.

But as a reality check, I’m looking at the first page of this community and only see one YouTube link. Doesn’t really seem like a problem worthy of a rule.
