I prefer Claws Mail. It does what I need it to.

The interface is a bit bare bones and 90’s but I like it that way. It’s a good and reliable client.

This is a very cute thread. I love turtles and I like them for their vast computer science skills too.

cmhe , (edited ) to linuxmemes in I like both, but usually prefer Ubuntu

I used to use Ubuntu in the past, and it wasn’t Unity, Upstart, Bazaar, Mir, Launchpad, Snap, Amazon ads integration etc. that convinced me to look elsewhere, it was that I found out how other, not commercial distributions, integrated and instrumented its user base into their development.

Instead of having to sign a CLAs when contributing and signing your right away to some corporation, you become part of the community. (Update: It seems they have switched from their Copyright assignment, so something not as invasive in 2011, which is good. But they still require you to sign a CLA.)

So always look who is developing the distribution first, are they individuals or is it one company. And don’t let yourself be bated into the dependency of one company, because then you will be the victim of enshittyfication eventually.

I’m boring and just use Thunderbird nowadays, but sometimes I yearn for those simpler days when I daily drove aerc.

CrabAndBroom ,

Yeah every once in a while I get restless and start thinking I should learn how to use Mutt or something, but I always end up going back to Thunderbird/Betterbird lol

Lies!

Everybody knows that the terrorists on the planes aimed them at the floor containing the Illuminati outpost and it was the fire from the cooling liquid for the supercomputers used to mind control everybody in New York that melted the support steel structure.

CodexArcanum , to asklemmy in Fellow MSTies, what is your all-time favorite episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000?

Space Mutiny is my favorite, but since OP already claimed it (now who will bring toys to the children!?) I’ll go with my close second, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. It’s such trash and Raul Julia tears up every blessed scene he’s in. He only dabbles in dopples but his love for the cinemas is easy to reciprocate.

some_guy , to programmer_humor in My friend suggested I use different names for variables..

Because I mostly (almost exclusively) write shell scripts, my vars are often like this: theList, workingDir, etc.

I’m a monster. But it works for me.

The wizards hunted dragons to extinction because their wings made good spell components and they want to dodge responsibility for it.

Its ugly, but it’s true.

sorrybookbroke , (edited ) to linux in Why does VirtualBox keep launching on boot?

Edit: these suggestions are last resort type stuff tbf, hope the guys in the other thread are more help. Looks like someone suggested session restore w/ kde which makes alot of sense.

Ok that’s increadibly weird. Here’s some places I’d look.

I’d start looking in environment files such as /.bash_profile, ./.profile, /etc/environment, /etc/profile and a few others. Maybe there’s a call to the application in one of these files?

Secondly, I’d attempt to write a bash script to walk a directory tree, cat out files, pipe it through grep and get every instance where VirtualBox is mentioned in a file. Trying the name of proccess, or of the executable too.

I have a snippet that may help, by replacing that bash script:
grep -Rinw ‘~/path/to/start/’ -e ‘VirtualBoxOrSmthngElse’

all credit to this answer on SO:
stackoverflow.com/a/16957078/11534230

Head there to see how to try and wittle down the matches. I’d start in a etc, ignore binary files with grep, and try everywere systematically

This is likely overkill lol. If you’re on xorg maybe there’s something in the file xorg uses for init? Can’t remember the name personally but I used it to start up some processes before on system boot quite a while ago

Move to the top of the tree you want to search and do something like this:

find . -type f -exec grep -iH “virtualboxexecutable” {} ;

That will give you what you want without the need for a script. -type f makes the find command only search files, and -exec has it run the grep command on any files it returns with -iH giving you case insensitive results showing you the file it’s found in. Substitute ‘virtualboxexecutable’ with whatever the process name is that is being run. If you want to ignore binary files, the add in "| grep -iv “binary file matches” to the command. That will strip out any results where it has searched a binary file.

Dumb TVs. I love the option to turn it into a pseudo-smart TV with just a streaming stick. But, I'm always okay with a TV that just has the ports for basic things.

i’ve always used thunderbird and never had any reason to try anything else.

I tried Betterbird, but had no end of certificate errors and trouble. Went back to tbird and all good again.

CrabAndBroom ,

I had the opposite for some reason! Thunderbird started giving lots of weird errors, especially with Gmail, but Betterbird worked fine so I just ended up switching over.
