I have been playing it for 6 years. The gun play is great. It gets regular updates. I still have fun. I wish the pvp player pool was bigger so that match making would work better.

My note 9 from like 5 years ago still doing great. But I’m careful with it. I do think apple has sturdier construction.

x00za ,

Depends on the brand. You can’t compare Android and Apple as you’re comparing an OS against a brand. You can however compare Android against iOS, and Sony against Apple.

I use my android phones for many many years.

In the end it’s the humidity that gets you

averyminya ,

That’s just regional though. Not much humidity in a lot of California. Not much humidity in Oregon, though there can be some. Fair amount of humidity in Wisconsin. Lots of humidity in Florida.

But one universal truth between all 4 of those states, despite the humidity, is when it’s 107 fucking degrees!?

Facebones ,

I hate “but its a dry heat” people. At 95, maybe. At 107, fuck you 107 is 107.

Why are you asking this here? This is meant more for asking about thoughts and experiences rather than tech support. You’d probably have better luck in a more technical community (or just googling it). You may still get some answers though 🤷

Modern_medicine_isnt OP ,

ah see. you knew the magic word was lift. I was using things like “what kind of motor is used in mattress adjustable bases” And I was getting no where. The word lift didn’t even occur to me. Thanks.

LeFantome , to linux in BSD Vs. Linux

BSD is well designed and cohesive but has many more missing bits and contraints than Linux. So, if you are in its sweet spot, it is awesome and maybe better than Linux. However, outside that it can be totally unusable.

For me, the biggest issue is the lack of software. There is both a mountain of it as it is of course an POSIX compatible OS and at the same time it is trivial to need important software that is missing.

As a desktop, it therefore feels very nice and also very limiting.

I love that it is actually real UNIX with an unbroken history back to the beginning. I find that really compelling. At the same time, I always get “bored” using it because it inevitably does not support what I want to do.

I am still hoping Chimera Linux finds a sweet spot that melds the two worlds in a nice way.

D_Air1 ,
@D_Air1@lemmy.ml avatar

Glad you brought up the software point. Back when I tried I had the same issue, but no one mentioned it when I was hearing about why I should try out a BSD system. Seems that even open source software often doesn’t have any of the BSD’s in mind and you end up needing to use that linux compat thing I remember seeing. If that even works for whatever you are trying to use.

BearOfaTime , (edited ) to askscience in What kind of motor is in an adjustable mattress base, and how does it work

What kind of adjustable mattress?

My guess would be a 120v electric motor using a screw gearing.

Screw gearing can transfer torque very well in one direction, and you can use very small motors because they’re usually a very high gear ratio (so they don’t move quickly).

The uni-directional torque transfer is why screw gearing keeps the bed from collapsing, and why screw gear is extensively used in steering systems (especially for heavier vehicles, like trucks).

Modern_medicine_isnt OP ,

screw motor. Thanks. I googled an image of that and it all made sense. Pretty sweet. And based on that, the motor doesn’t seem like it would have any impact on the minimum difference between height settings. It would just a question of some kind of control that converts the remote signal into a burst of on or off for the motor. So likely there are an infinite number of positions the bed could achieve because holding the the button would be nondeterministic as to how far it would move. Thanks.

BearOfaTime ,

Yep.

Don’t even need a stepper or servo motor. Any old motor will do.

I think because we have mostly memes and any discussion is just won by downvoting your opponent. :)

I’m half serious… The platform right now is lacking actual discussions. Everyone seems to just like memes.

lemmydividebyzero ,

Unfortunately, the Lemmy community copied opinion downvoting from Reddit.

There are good reasons to downvote, but a different opinion is not one of them. This just leads to echo chambers.

There are 3 options: upvote, downvote and the 3rd one is just not clicking anything.

Randomgal ,

Not to mention the deluge of posts/comments advocating greater violence in the name of stopping violence. Honestly? I think people are just waking up to the fact that behind the techno babble and ideological propaganda, Lemmy is a social network just like any other.

BearOfaTime , (edited )

I think so.

Don’t linear actuators usually use a stepper or servo motor?

Yeah, but the gear box and ball screw are the same layout
