blackbrook , to asklemmy in Is it really just ageing/ getting older? How is this supposed to work? How is everyone else doing this?

I’m decades older than you and I’ve only experienced much milder versions of some of what you’ve described. Your dr is a complete asshat. I think drs tend toward being negligent about that sort of thing as people age in general, but to hand that line to someone in their mid-twenties is beyond stupid.

Diabarha feat Awakesy! - Be my Valentine in my Ass

BananaTrifleViolin , (edited ) to startrek in Worst examples of Treknobabble

I think Discovery had the worst. It isn’t the technobabbke it self that was the problem, it was how it was delivered.

Everyone seemed to be needed to be the most intelligent person in the room. So one person would start with some sudden realisation and solution, and then another would interrupt them and pick up the idea and then either back to the first person, or yet another person would interrupt. Between then all they’d build a tower of technobabble and deus ex machina, and self congratulatory nonsense. It was just so silly.

Person 1 “wait if we reveresed the polarity of the neutron projector…”

Person 2 “yes! It’d cause a build of tachyons and we’d be able to resonate the electron confabulaotr! Oh but there wouldn’t be enough plasma.”

Person 3: “no wait, that might work! We’d have to recomboulate the manifolds and…”

Person 1: "…that would allow us to recrystallise the warp matrix! Of course!’

Whose a genius? Everyone in the room is a genius! Let’s all give ourselves a round of applause.

That and all the space kung fu.

I mean, as an engineer, I can tell you that sort of group solving DOES happen in meetings sometimes, but it’s the speed they do it at in the show that’s unrealistic. At the same time, slowing it down would make for bad television so idk

@rhythmisaprancer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

I dont think it is helpful to see it as a slur. This is more like "use my words against me" and it works, really well. The right wing folks this is messing with identify as being normal, predictable, sensible, strong, etc. Not weird. So when one of them goes to a donut shop and has their internal record get stuck on "OK, good" it looks abnormal, unpredictable, nonsensical, and perhaps even weak. AKA weird, and we can make them uncomfortable with that.

I have a feeling that the political use of it will die out after the election, for what that’s worth. And I don’t think it will seriously impact the “Keep ______ Weird” trend, because they are celebrating weirdness (whereas the Republicans are trying to claim they’re not).

woelkchen , to linux in Fedora: GNOME or KDE?
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar
  • KDE Plasma has currently better upstream development (a side effect of Steam Deck) but the integration of KDE into Fedora is done by volunteers.
  • Gnome is integrated into Fedora by Red Hat employees but upstream development lags a bit behind in adopting some newer technologies Red Hat isn’t that interested for RHEL.

I used Fedora in the past and found the KDE Spin a little less polished. I don’t know the current situation but there was a time Fedora KDE shipped out of the box with three web browsers because the volunteers couldn’t agree on one, whereas the RH employees just decided that they want Firefox and not Gnome Web for RHEL, so in Fedora they just did the same. Updates were rolled out in a timely manner (and I heard nothing that indicated anything changed in that regard), so the volunteer squad didn’t do a worse job there than the paid Gnome people.

AmbiguousProps , to linux in Fedora: GNOME or KDE?

Both are great options, but KDE/plasma 6 is my pick.

Crackhappy ,
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

Vegans really like beans and Lemmy also really likes beans. But not in a began way so they started fighting. There were some riots and a lot of beans were murdered. It was sad.

The weird window has shifted. Having purple hair and a nose ring used to be “very weird”. Now nobody blinks an an eye at that stuff.

But being attracted to your own daughter (and admitting it publicly) and fucking a couch (and admitting it publicly) are still considered very weird.

MrBobDobalina ,

Get them on the real stuff, there’s plenty of it. The couch thing is known to be made up and is just misinformation now (well, always was).

He certainly seems like someone who might fuck a couch because he’s fucking weird, so keep the jokes about it coming, but the book excerpt was fake

According to Wikipedia Rankine is properly used with the degree symbol, but sometimes is not by analogy with Kelvin.

“pejorative” is probably a better word. calling it a “slur” is a bit strong.

but Tim Walz started it when he called JD Vance “weird.” It just sorta stuck because, well, he’s right.

CeruleanRuin , (edited ) to asklemmy in What books do you consider must reads?

Godel, Escher, Bach
Infinite Jest
The Lord of the Rings
The Demon-Haunted World
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Slaughterhouse-Five
Small Gods
Master and Commander

and everything else written by those authors.

The first two or three on that list might take several fits and starts to get through, YMMV, but they are WELL worth the effort, and you will come out the other side changed by the experience. The others are all pretty easily digestible, but no less transformative.

From the wording of the other rules below the highlighted one, I can only assume they mean you can’t install a second router that they provide. I mean, it also says you can’t install any “owner-supplied” devices.
