With an encrypted disk, you only need to enter the encryption password when you shutdown or restart. Suspending and sleep lock screen don’t need your encryption password.

@remram@lemmy.ml avatar

Suspending to disk usually requires a password on resume.

that_leaflet ,
@that_leaflet@lemmy.world avatar

That’s true for hibernation, but not suspending. Hibernation stores everything in RAM onto the disk then shuts off the PC; to resume the system, you need to unlock the disk to access that data. Suspending doesn’t turn off the computer, it keeps the CPU and RAM active.

On my Fedora system, I can hit the suspend button and get back into the OS without needing to type my encryption password, only my user password.

Ok so what do you call “sleep”? You’ve now listed suspending, sleeping, and hibernating as 3 different things.

that_leaflet ,
@that_leaflet@lemmy.world avatar

I can sleep “sleep”. All system components are still powered on at this stage, so it uses the most power. But at the same time it’s the quickest to get back into your system. All that’s really happening with sleep is that the screen turns off.

Then you have suspend. Laptops often first go to sleep but then suspend after a long period of inactivity to save battery.

Then you have hibernation. I don’t think this is used that often nowadays.

@remram@lemmy.ml avatar

I have never met anyone refer to “screen off” as “sleep”.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_mode

The terms everybody else are using are: “sleep” = “suspend to RAM” = “S3” and “hibernation” = “suspend to disk”.

mvirts , to techsupport in USB boot Ubuntu issue

It may be an issue with the bios not setting up the USB drive like grub expects… Maybe try booting with uefi if you can?

I think those symptoms mean it’s loading the first stage of grub but them grub can’t find the rest of itself

I second AsudoxDev’s idea that it may be worth using a different flash tool or a different USB drive if you can’t get it working.

@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

I don’t claim expertise, but after living in four different coastal areas of three different bodies of water, I’ve not heard one. It’s always just “6 hours to high tide” or something like that, they want to know time to high/low point so people can plan accordingly.

limitedduck , to selfhosted in Anyone with problems with duckdns DynDNS?

I used to rely heavily on duckdns and it was great for a time, but moved off them a couple of years ago because resolution became inconsistent. I’ve since rolled my own ddns using a script that utilizes Porkbun.com’s DNS record API.

Encrypting and decrypting are complex operations that requires a lot from the hardware. The resources needed to encrypt and decrypt is proportionally correlated with the amount of files you’re encrypting and decrypting.

That said, there are some alternatives

  1. Encrypt the whole filesystem
  2. Encrypt only your home folder
  3. Encrypt only the files you wanna

There is an app, Vaults, that allows you to create vaults to easily encrypt and decrypt folders. Take a look on this app

In my state you can shoot, butcher, and then dispose of all of the waste (bones, skin, etc) from a deer directly into the trash. My first thought would have been, assuming you feel bones inside, that it’s from hunting.

“Stand of the tide” is offered by Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slack_tide?wprov=sfti1#Misc…

deranger ,

stand of the tide’, which is when tide levels ‘stand’ at a maximum or minimum

Isn’t that when it’s just standing at high or low tide?

Some googling leads me to find it’s either “ebb tide” or “flood tide” depending on whether it’s halfway falling or halfway rising, respectively. I’m not sure if this is exactly half way though, some diagrams make it appear that any time in between in either one of these, not necessarily half way exactly.

Trabic OP ,

I think you’re right about slack and stand, and ebb and flood would work but it’s usually just a glimpse when I drive over a bridge that makes me think about it, so I don’t know which way it’s going.

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

We use them as just the tide flow here.

I wouldn’t be taken aback if someone said half tide, and is probably what I would use if I was asked on the spot
