I did that for about a year while I was waiting for a game to be supported on linux. I agree, is the best procedure.

Shellbeach , to workreform in Do we really want a leader who celebrates firing people?

It reminds me of that homeglow commercial where a lady brags about firing her old cleaning lady after using the service. Tone deaf and cruel, it’s astonishing that someone was like “yeah, that’s gonna make us look good”.

chetradley , to lemmyshitpost in I need to survive for 3 days while pooping, and eating as much as possible. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Dried prunes, apples and pears have, I believe, the highest poop to volume ratio of any food.

Anyone else sick of hearing about this?

I don’t care about the person who said it (no idea why she’s constantly getting interviewed and such), and it was only slightly funny to begin with.

Cap , to science_memes in Bees is fish.
@Cap@kbin.melroy.org avatar

The 1970 act explicitly protected “fish,” which were initially defined as invertebrates. And because the act has protected snails and other invertebrates that live on land since, Tuesday’s ruling said it interpreted the legislation to also include bees.

I'd link to the article but it's a nightmare.

2 years ago, in a hot summer, i had a fly stay the whole day with me. When i noticed, i first shushed it away and it kept landing on the same spot. Since it wasn’t really bothering me, i kept the fly in my view and it was absolutely always landing and staying very close to me, but never touched me.

It followed me through the whole house, wherever, bathroom, kitchen living room - it was always just a few inches away from me.

I even started to be careful, not to sit on it … Like this would ever happen, as fast as they are.

Anyway, it was strange and wholesome at the same time. Was gone the next day, i really missed the little fella.

Edit: though, they live longer, or? Afaik, the flies that only live 24 hours are mayflies.

I’m sure my fly was a common house fly. Must have gotten bored with me, after a day.

Edit 2:

Must have gotten bored with me, after a day i took a shower.

TheSlad, thanks for reminding me

TheSlad ,

Did you consider taking a shower at any point during that day?

kamenlady ,
@kamenlady@lemmy.world avatar

I mostly shower around 9:00 pm. Yeah I must have had some scent on me, the strange thing was the fly was absolutely no-touchy.

Such stank that even the flies keep their distance.

As much as the content of this comment is enjoyable, the fact that it is the 1st and not 105th comment is disappointing.

We cannot deny for one moment that animals think, understand, plan, and navigate the world just as humans do.

They just can’t use language as much as we can*, & mostly aren’t as big as us. But they’re way smarter than we’ve been taught , as every farmer in history would tell you.

And a lot of modern scientists. One cognitive science PhD met once said: the closer we look, the more we see non-human animals doing things we used to think only humans did. Tiny animals, she meant. Snails. Mites. Bacteria.

beefbot ,

*can’t use language as much as we can: AS FAR AS WE CAN CURRENTLY TELL. Which isn’t all that much tbh

Me, I think birds are already there, full nouns & verbs. And I highly suspect insects have language systems too. I don’t mean some loose definition like like ants and chemical markers, or emotional expressions.

I mean what linguists mean: units of expression- sound (hand shapes, in signed langs) which recombine to signify different things, in a productive way, allowing for level upon level of transmission of thoughts. It’s a high bar to qualify as human language. And I think probably some nonhuman animals have it, and we’re just not listening closely enough.

But the closer we look.

(And yes there’s a Ted Chiang story about this)

If you don’t know when it was planted, then just cut the tree down and count the rings. Easy!

BuboScandiacus ,

And how much time is equal to a ring ? Four seasons ?

jol ,

I think one human year equals 7 tree years, or something. So if you know when the tree was planted, just multiply by 7!

You already use Draw to replace publisher in your list so why not use the rest of the Libre Office Suite?

Note: this belongs more in a Windows community than a Linux one. The people here would already use Gnu/Linux or Google/Linux

accideath ,

While LibreOffice has improved immensely over the years, its compatibility to Microsoft’s file formats is still a bit hit n miss at times, while OnlyOffice is a drop in replacement. It looks like MS Office and handles docx & Co. as well as MS Office, which might be a deciding factor for someone who has been on Windows for a long time and has all their documents in docx.

Also, I personally always get MS Office 2003 flashbacks when using LibreOffice, while file types don’t really matter to me.

ILikeBoobies ,

I found LO had better compatibility than Microsoft Office when using different versions but I understand out of the box the UI is different/better
