This is dumb as rocks

The most charitable interpretation is “well crocodiles didn’t change in the last 100 million years but birds did so that means maybe crocs are closer since birds evolved to get farther away”

That’s dumb because both birds and crocodiles have been changing the whole time. Just because crocs look more similar to their fossils, doesn’t mean they haven’t been evolving/drifting/etc.

Same thing any time someone talks about “sharks haven’t changed”. It’s dumb.

This is some dunning Kruger shit.

TxzK ,

It has nothing to do with if the said animal were evolving or not. Birds and Crocodilians are the only living animals of the Archosauria clade. Since birds are dinosaurs, technically they aren’t their relatives. So Crocs are the closest living relatives of dinosaurs (and birds), since they belong in the same clade and shared a common ancestor more recent than anyone else alive.

for the package manager remark, you can get by with the GUI on most popular distros now.

I like using the cli but every now and then I challenge myself to only use GUI and I feel like it works fine on fedora, ubuntu etc.

I particularly like that fedora workstation keeps the system updates/upgrades in the GNOME app store, it feels cohesive and intuitive.

Contests in of themselves are fine, but when there are stakes that are won regardless of anyone’s control, we may as well be speaking of the act of gifting.

Resol , to linuxmemes in Why Are You Staying On Windows 11?
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I only continue to use Windows 11 because dual booting Linux breaks my Windows installation for whatever reason. I’ve been told that putting each OS on its own separate SSD works fine, but it’s hard to do when you’re using a laptop that you’re not sure whether or not it has an extra NVMe slot or even a SATA slot.

Virtual machines are my only fix.

Some people are squirrel handed! Gregor is a weird name.

Diddlydee , to showerthoughts in Someday soon (if it hasn't already happened) a book will be published that was written and edited entirely on a phone/tablet with a touch keyboard.

I wrote a book of short horror stories mostly on my phone in snippets, just using a notes app. Only the final edit was on a laptop.

Game shows - I’m not going to watch them, but I’m comfortable with the idea of them. People apply to participate, so presumably they know what to expect from them. Survivor-style endurance shows disgust me a bit. Once again, people know what to expect, but they really do seem formatted to bring out the worst in the contestants.

No, but a grade school science class would have…

EatATaco ,

Yeah this is mindboggling. It wouldn’t have ever crossed her mind to tell her kid that they don’t need oxygen canisters on this planet? I mean, what the dad said is good, as it opened the door to some more learning… but wow.

Corvid , to selfhosted in What app+hardware package is most comparable to iCloud Photos in regard to speed and features?

You’re not gonna find a self hosted solution as good as iCloud Photos, at least not yet. As a stop gap you can turn on advanced data protection on iCloud to significantly improve your privacy.

I used to bring an Aeropress with me, with Airgrind. Nowadays I’m bringing a Flair Pro with 1ZPresso JMax with my trusty Acaia Lunar with beans. More time away from the computer the better.
