Second hwtest suite.

Distros just ship packages, some rare drivers may be missing, distros have different versions of drivers, some are external and packagers just take proprietary code and make it compatible, like with NVIDIA on Fedora.

To be engaging and genuine. I think there’s a lot of ways to achieve it, but it depends on the story and the public, because some may see too idyllic relationships as unrealistic and others may see more down-to-earth relationships as toxic.

Kubuntu chose to not ship Plasma 6 because it didnt match their release point. While in general a good decision, stable releases are the flaw really.

So a semi-rolling Kubuntu yes, but LTS Kubuntu before Plasma 6? Wouldnt recommend.

Ubuntu is also still full in on Snaps. Flatpak comes from a PPA I think. Their store is snaps-first.

While this is not a bad concept, Flatpaks are better for many reasons. They also may be worse for some others, mainly because Snaps just use Apparmor for sandboxing, like the rest of the system, so you can make easy exceptions.

astro_ray , (edited )

They ship flatpak with their own repo for 5+ years.

The apparmour thing can get pretty annoying if an app you like breaks because of it.

I have a friend who used to drink too much water. This eventually lead to him having dangerously low sodium levels but he didn’t know that. One day, he knew something was wrong and was yelling to his landlady next door to get help. He passed out outside of his apartment. Then he was in a coma for 4 days.

I asked him what the coma was like. He said he remembered having a vague sense of panic like he was still trying to get his landlady. He doesn’t remember, but when he first woke up, he was screaming her name and fighting the nurses.

I wouldn’t say “excited”, as I don’t know of it having any specific advantages over what’s already on the market.

I’m quite fond of my 7 and 8 though. Battery life and cell reception could be better, but I’ve never found either to be less than satisfactory.

MentalEdge , (edited ) to linux in Is there a program that I can run on my laptop to tell me what Linux distro supports the hardware out of the box? Also whether the hardware is supported at all?
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

What works/doesn’t work is mostly down to what version of the kernel a distro ships. Most hardware drivers will be compiled into the kernel, or if not, shipped with the distro as kernel modules which get loaded as needed. Either way, the kernel version determines what is and isn’t possible on a given install.

DualSense 5 support for example was introduced in Linux Kernel 5.15, IIRC.

Most distros ship a relatively up-to-date kernel, and hence, the actual hardware support is essentially identical. When it isn’t, it’s down to excluded/included kernel modules, which is usually something you can change if needed.

Others have already commented on the actual ways to find out what will and won’t work, but in general, a newer Linux kernel means better hardware support.

If you try something, and some things don’t work, you’ll either have to figure out how to install and load the appropriate kernel module to get the appropriate driver working, or simply swap out the whole kernel for a newer version.

This is tricky on some installs, like Ubuntu based distros, very impractical on immutable systems, and super easy on distros like arch.

The real complications come when configuring things that Linux doesn’t just automatically figure out sometimes. Fingerprint sensors, fan curves… If that stuff isn’t a known and implemented standard on a given device, getting it to work isn’t a matter of finding the right distro or kernel version.

Nvidia was a pain before when I did it myself, but I did get it to work. I switched to PopOS though, and it made nvidia so. much. easier! There’s just a separate download for it

DoucheBagMcSwag ,

Interesting… So Pop OS favors NVIDIA?

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I wouldn’t say they favor it, but they have a standard build/iso and one that has Nvidia drivers already set up and ready

DoucheBagMcSwag ,

I’m gonna replace my Mint install (secondary HDD)!with Pop OS this weekend

Womble ,

IIRC it just defaults on Ubuntu’s handling for close source Nvida drivers (though its been a while since I used pop os so that could be out of date)
