Snowcano , to startrek in Patti Yasutake Dies: ‘Beef’ & ‘Star Trek’ Actress Was 70

Nooooo, was just watching Future Imperfect with a friend the other day and when she showed up I was like, “Yaaaay, Nurse Ogawa!” and then found out while cehcking Memory Alpha afterwards that that ep was actually her first appearance. For a character with so little screentime, I always really liked her and wish we’d seen more of her. RIP Patti, we’ll raise a glass in Ten Forward to ye!

wuphysics87 , to asklemmy in Women of Lemmy, do you mind being called cute?

Male here. There are many contexts. If I was still in high school, and a coach says “Don’t be cute with me”, I would take it as a compliment. It would mean I was doing a good job pissing him off.

Godthrilla , to asklemmy in Women of Lemmy, do you mind being called cute?

The most important thing I ever realized, if I want to compliment a woman, you never compliment her on her features, you compliment her on her choices. “Hey you look cute” is automatically going to put her hackles up. “Hey, I really like your dress” is a neutral statement you can make that doesn’t make you a danger. Which is what most women view men as after a lifetime of being treated as prey.

Pretty good chance eating the cat would have a more significant and immediate positive impact on the populations of your local woodland critters.

Sorry Dexter, it’s for the greater good.

Remember, KDR is a flawed mechanic. I’d trade a 20-2 player who farms eco rounds for a 10-12 player who gets those essential kills that win the round/match/etc.

vk6flab , to asklemmy in Recommendations on a quality clip on NC microphone?
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

I suspect that your success rate will be very low. Bone conduction microphones might be your best bet.

Fundamentally a microphone doesn’t know the difference between “good” sound and “bad” sound.

Most noise cancelling solutions are based around the idea that nearby sound is good and distant sound is bad.

It differentiate between the two by using the fact that it takes time for sound to travel.

If you have two identical microphones, you can set them up so that you talk directly into one, but not the other.

Any environmental sounds are picked up by both and used to cancel it - sometimes in software, other times just by reversing the microphone polarity.

Bone conduction microphones get their signal from physical contact with the audio source, your body.

Source: I’ve done a little bit of audio recording over the years in and outside of studios. My information might be incomplete and out of date. YMMV.

The human voice is a different frequency then construction noise though. Isn’t it possible to build a microphone who filters out other frequencies? Maybe even customized to the users frequency?

I know nothing about this, just asking.

vk6flab ,
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

Sadly not. Form an audio frequency perspective, noise is many different frequencies. The human voice pretty much matches human hearing.

A voice is not one frequency, that’s a tone. We’ve constructed systems that throw away much of the voice frequencies whilst still being understandable. Telephone calls, digital radio communication, etc.

That’s not to reduce noise, it’s to cram more calls across the same link. There’s a side effect that does reduce noise to some extent, but not significant enough to remove construction noise.

Picked up The Book of Elsewhere by China Miéville and Keanu Reeves. It’s part of the BRZRKR universe from comic books.

I gotta be honest though, the BRZRKR story is so incredibly visual, it doesn’t translate well to a novel.

I think something is broken with detecting and doing localization for the browser more-broadly on their site. Their main site – not generated by the LLM – has buttons for “Try le Chat” and “Build on la Platforme” even though I’ve got the British flag selected for language.

Don’t know anything recent, but years ago they began blocking network traffic between rows. That killed what little self hosted LAN play was still happening but kept stuff from spreading across the whole BYOC.

intensely_human , to asklemmy in Are your grandparents and parents nice or tolerant people?

If your grandma grew up post WW2 then she did not grow up during Nazi Germany.

I know that’s just one detail but you got it wrong and it makes me wonder if you aren’t highly motivated to misinterpret what she says.

Have you tried directly telling her how you’re hearing what she’s saying, instead of going straight to the sarcasm?
