odium , to meanwhileongrad in I've decided lemmy.ml is too tankie for me, and would like to know what instances completely defederate from it?

How to block an entire instance on jerboa:

  1. Open post.
  2. Tap three dots on bottom right of post
  3. Tap block
  4. You should see options to block user, community, and entire instance.
FundMECFSResearch OP ,

Thanks. Does this prevent me from seeing users from that community too?

odium ,

No, I think it just blocks all lemmy.ml communities. Not posts/comments made by ml users on communities from other instances.

In my experience, it did greatly cut down on the tankie posts and comments I was reading because ml users’ political takes are mostly contained within their own instance. I only come across tankie takes once every few days now. And I’m on lemmy a lot.

I will say that a second-hand ThinkPad is a great option. They can be real cheap, but you can also get a pretty decent new one for your budget.

You can likely find great T480-T495 that fits your needs really well.

@boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net avatar

I HIGHLY recommend against the T495. That thing has a great keyboard, fingerprint sensor, okay camera and mics, okay ports. But it is underpowered af, and Thinkpads always have the Thinkpad price.

It has a great chassis, but my coreboot Clevo NV41 has double the performance and kinda same battery life.

@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I disagree with it being underpowered for regular office use and media consumption. If you can get your hands on a 16 GB RAM one, it should be able to handle just about anything other than gaming.

mortalic ,

Agreed, I love mine.

BarrelAgedBoredom ,

I’m farting around on a T480 for school and light retro gaming. Works great! Super easy to upgrade too

Cigarette butts really anger me. It’s a sign of entitlement that I hate. The person knows it’s smelly and disgusting, so they get it as far away from their person or car without a second thought.

I can be judgemental about it because I smoked for over 20 years. I kept a ziplock bag on me (kind of like you would for dog poop when walking your dog) and would keep em in there until I could find a trash can. The ashtray in my car was also used instead of throwing them out the window.

Now that I’ve quit the habit, I notice it even more. It’s awful. My father and mother in law throw their butts on our lawn literally every time they come over, even though they are fully aware that we don’t smoke. When I put a coffee can on the front porch and let them know that’s where they should throw them, they looked at ME like I was the rude one.

Judge em hard. Cigarette smokers have very little space for other people in their world.

Thorny_Insight OP ,

Yeah I confronted a friend for throwing one onto my lawn and they didn’t seem to get why it was such a big deal for me. He clearly thinks nothing of it. In the army we were always told to bury them. It’s not a perfect solution either but so much better than just tossing it.

DickFiasco , to asklemmy in People who used older macintosh OS in the 90s, what was it like for your daily use, work, games etc?

I used a Mac SE/30 running OS 7 quite a bit in the early 90’s. I remember it being incredibly reliable; in fact, I can’t even remember what a crash looked like on a Mac, whereas I can still picture the BSOD from Windows 3.1.

I don’t remember noticing much difference in snappiness or intuitiveness between Mac and Windows back then though. Both were pretty easy to learn, even for people with limited computer experience. Anything with a hard drive felt snappy at the time, because the previous generation of computers all ran on floppy disks which were slow as molasses.

Thinking of starting Tchia, given its recent addition to Game Pass.

That depends on where you live.

In europe I recommend Novacustom or 3mdeb if you want coreboot, Starlabs too.

In the US System76.

hoherd , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why is there no sense of "camaderie" in the workplace?

Different companies have different broad cultures, and different subcultures within teams. Some companies just don’t have a sense of camaraderie built into their broad culture.

One thing that people don’t always understand, and I always point this out to people I work with, is that your professional relationships are much more important than the company itself. Everybody is going to move on from their current job some day. When that day comes, they will benefit from having strong relationships with past team mates, either by knowing folks who can help them get new work, or by knowing folks who they can bring in to tackle projects at the new job.

Your professional network is one of your most valuable assets in your career. The people you work with are real people, with real families. Relationships with great team mates are more important than the company you both work at now, and will outlast your time at that company. Camaraderie is key to that whole scenario. Make sure you reach out to people you respect and enjoy working with and tell them how much you value that professional relationship. You will both be better off for it.

If you can afford to pour in a little bit more money, get a Thinkpad T14 Gen 5/T16 Gen 3 AMD variant. You can also get the T14 Gen 4/T16 Gen 2 AMD variant, but the RAM will be soldered. The X13 laptop is probably what you’re looking for, if screen is a big deal for you, but they have soldered chipsets, and the only thing modular is the NVME storage. Then there’s the HP Elitebook 835, 845 and the 855, and also the Acer TravelMate (I don’t remember the exact model). By the way, Framework is also available in Sweden, so you may also look into that.

Slim, gorgeous. Runs Linux like a champ.

I have bought only Asus for my last 4 laptops (previously I was Thinkpad), and I have never regretted any of them. Since switching from Windows to Linux earlier this year (Aurora-DX) I have had no issues.

If you want to go even smaller and lighter, this one is awesome but is Intel and doesn’t have as long battery life.

protist , to nostupidquestions in Why is there no sense of "camaderie" in the workplace?

This is highly dependent on which company/agency you work, and even which dept or team you’re on within a company. I’ve made a ton of very good friends through the years at my jobs, but I’m also not friends with everyone who I worked with, and I recognize there’s a difference between joking around as friends outside of work and being amiable and professional at work
