Proton I guess? First tier is free, it’s encrypted, your data is protected by Swiss privacy laws… There’s an app for your phone and also a single VPN account as well.

They don’t have a linux client for their Drive storage solution so I am mad at them but it may fit the ticket for you.

Tuta (previously Tutanota) because it’s private, runs on 100% renewable energy, very affordable if you want to use a custom domain, has end-to-end encryption between Tuta emails and it’s email clients are open source including a very nice app on F-Droid

kambusha , to nostupidquestions in In January, is it winter in Australia?

Can’t comment on Australia, but South America calls Jan summer, and July winter.

AbouBenAdhem , to nostupidquestions in In January, is it winter in Australia?

No, summer and winter are reversed in the southern hemisphere.

But more than that: the seasons aren’t even consistent across each hemisphere—the exact beginning and ending dates of each season vary from region to region depending on the local climate.

teft ,
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

As an example, where I live near the equator we have seasons that are only a few weeks long. We alternate between “summer” and “winter”. The quotes are because the only real difference in our seasons is how much rain falls since neither the temperature nor the amount of daylight changes much. Winter seasons are cloudy and wet and summer seasons are sunny and dry.

Rooskie91 ,

Yeah if you think about it the idea of 4 seasons permeating culture has more to do with European colonization than anything scientific.

Well, here in Austria we get about a day of skiing less per year since the 2000s.

Also, for the northern hemisphere people, yes, Australia has snow.

Deceptichum , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in In January, is it winter in Australia?
@Deceptichum@quokk.au avatar

Yup we’re in the middle of winter as we speak.

The season names relate to the weather, not the period of year. It would be odd to have Spring be when all the leaves are falling off the trees.

There’s also many different Aboriginal calendars which relate much better to what the weather is like compared to an imported European system.

So for example this month I should see the cold weather end, orchids and wattles start to bloom, and brown butterfly caterpillars to start feeding.

makingStuffForFun ,
@makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml avatar

The wattles are thick with buds that will be blooming soon. That means trout fishing time!

Somewhat larger than just one country’s war.

Somewhat smaller than a world war.

Apeman42 , to asklemmy in What is a less popular type/genre of movies that you watch ? What makes it interesting for you ?
@Apeman42@lemmy.world avatar

I have a thing for anthology movies. A few small stories with connected themes or settings rather than one long story.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Sin City, History of the World Part 1, Creepshow, and Heavy Metal are all great examples.

GBU_28 , to games in Avowed is getting delayed to early 2025

Who cares, wait for a game to be out for many months before purchase. It will generally be more stable, and often on sale.

I was talking to my dad about my job and how people don’t know how to use Linux. He said “Yeah, nobody uses that UNIX stuff anymore.”

Then I pointed out that his phone and his computer both run flavors of UNIX, since he’s been using Apple products since I made him switch by not supporting his issues with Windows, and that most of the websites and apps he’s using are running Linux on the backend.
