Record an indie album with mostly acoustic instruments then send it off to a DJ to mix and master. It wouldn’t be a remix then, more of a collaboration.

hendrik , to selfhosted in What's the bang for the buck go to setup for AI image generation and LLM models?

Buy the cheapest graphics card with 16 or 24GB of VRAM. In the past people bought used NVidia 3090 cards. You can also buy a GPU from AMD, they're cheaper but ROCm is a bit more difficult to work with. Or if you own a MacBook or any Apple device with a M2 or M3, use that. And hopefully you paid for enough RAM in it.

thirdBreakfast , (edited )

An M1 MacBook with 16GB cheerfully runs llama3:8b outputting about 5 words a second. A second hand MacBook like that probably costs half to a third of a secondhand RTX3090.

It must suck to be a bargain hunting gamer. First bitcoin, and now AI.

Ok. I get it now. I’ve been trying to build something cheap as a Linux gaming setup and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m better off buying the steam deck.

I think an older Ryzen and an RX590 can be had for decent prices, no?

Yeah, but the form factor of the steam deck makes it more appealing if I want to set It up in the living room

I actually use an AMD card for running image generation and LLMs on my PC on Linux. It’s actually not hard to set up.

Details on your setup?

russjr08 ,

I’m not the original person you replied to, but I also have a similar setup. I’m using a 6700XT, with both InvokeAI and stable-diffusion-webui-forge setup to run without any issues. While I’m running Arch Linux, I have it setup in Distrobox so its agnostic to the distro I’m running (since I’ve hopped between quite a few distros) - the container is actually an Ubuntu based container.

The only hiccup I ran into is that while ROCm does support this card, you need to set an environmental variable for it to be picked up correctly. At the start of both sd-webui and invokeai’s launch scripts, I just use:

export HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION=10.3.0

In order to set that up, and it works perfectly. This is the link to the distrobox container file I use to get that up and running.

Thx. I’m dabbling rn with a 2015 Intel i5 SFF and a low profile 6400 GPU, but it looks like I’ll be getting back to all my gear soon, and was curious to see what others are having success running with.

I think I’m looking at upgrading to a 7600 or greater GPU in a ryzen 7, but still on the sidelines watching the ryzen 9k rollout.

I still haven’t tried any image generation, have only used llamafile and LM studio, but would like to did a little deeper, while accounting for my dreaded ADHD that makes it miserable to learn new skills…

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I have Fedora installed on my system (don’t know how the situation is on other distros regarding rocm) and my GPU is an RX 6700 XT. For image generation I use stable duffusion webui and for LLMs I use text generation webui. Both installed everything they needed by themselves and work perfectly fine on my AMD GPU. I can also give you more info if there’s anything else you wanna know.

Diddlydee , to asklemmy in What creative project have you long wanted to start but never have?

A sequel to my first novel that people regularly ask me about 12 years after I finished it. I published it myself and sold to friends, family, work acquaintances. Two young kids and a busy job wildly delayed any free time I might have for grand modern fantasy. One of these years.

Reverendender ,

Can I have a copy?

EvanescentWave , to books in Suggestions for General Public

I imagine humor books would be a great fit for situations where people come and go, but I haven’t read much in that genre. Maybe Pratchett would be possible. Generally, a safe bet are older books that are set in a genre that is naturally SFW. I am thinking of Agatha Christie style detective novels.

If you liked the theme of stories in the Name of the Wind, you might like “the starless sea” by Erin Morgernstern. It is a bit “progressive” in the sense, that it contains a little gay love story but all very much SFW and with a romantic perspective. There is one scene however, I’m not quite sure how it was described that could be considered a sex scene? As far as I remember, sex was rather mentioned and not described or anything. Oh, and a big warning, that the sequel of Name of the wind is NFSW. For more fantasy, I can recommend Narnia or His dark Materials by Philip Pullman, which both are series written to be read by children and adults alike.

If you want to continue with sci-fi, maybe consider “We are Legion”/the Bobiverse by Dennis E. Taylor or the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

I have several small ideas that seem like they’d go together in a work of fiction, but there are also so many gaps that seeing it ruins any forward thinking I might have about it.

Diddlydee , (edited )

The best way really is to just start. You might chop and change, write and rewrite, many times but you will find a way to make it come together. Writing notes and a list of plot points helps, or even writing out the separate sections and then finding a way to make them meet. Don’t get bogged down in the minutiae of sentences and paragraphs. Getting the bare bones down is your starting point. I used a spreadsheet and would add in new points and landmarks as and when they came to me. I still ended up spending ages editing, and adding, and amending until it felt right. Taxing but cathartic to get it all out.

grrgyle ,

I would add that writing it out, or preferably actually talking it out with someone, will take your ideas from the nebulous internal language of the mind, where they can be these indistinct perfect concepts that capture whatever it is you’re about at the moment… anyway, it will take them from that beautiful but unreal state, into real memes that have to be described with language and imagery and all its limitations.

The first time you speak your whole synopsis out loud, even if it sounds a bit hollow, that’s when you’re idea is born into the real world.
