More than half of my titles and descriptions have typos in it so it’s a blessing

This is some type of origin story. Not sure if vilian or hero

mightyfoolish ,

Definitely hero. Love is real only if it hurts. He’ll come back stronger and be the hero we need… and probably the best hero we deserve too.

Are comments marked in some way to show when edited like reddit was?

Are titles?

Like could I write a post/comment “how often do you call your parents” and after everyone comments, once a week, once a day, oh god never, etc,

Edit the post/comment to say “how often do you eat poop”

And then sit back and chuckle softly to myself? Or would it say *(edited)

It should.

Edit: edit check

Worked

moldyringwald , to linux in Why many people are switching to NixOS ?
@moldyringwald@kbin.social avatar

It's insanely stable but you have to have a lot of linux/programming knowledge to do even the simplest things like installing/updating your software or making little tweaks. I played with it for hours the other day and I'm just too dumb to figure it out lol I think it's just a super stable highly customizable distro for power users and a lot of people like that. If you can get over the learning curve it's a pretty powerful and unique os

Chobbes ,

It’s kind of funny because I’d put NixOS on a complete newbies computer for sure, and recommend it to an expert… But I’m less sure if I’d tell a random mid-intermediate Linux user to switch.

Like if Grandma wants Linux on their computer to do some internet browsing for some reason… I’d absolutely put NixOS on it because it’s easy to manage the system for them… But somebody who is a little familiar with Linux already might be more confused about the differences. It’s kind of the ultimate beginner distro and the ultimate power-user distro, but a bit awkward between those extremes, haha.

It is a Vulcan salute: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan_salute

I don’t recall why Riker would have been using one in that context, though, unless TNG was trying to establish the gesture had expanded in use across the Federation.

EDIT: also, this is in S01E15 “11001001”, not E14.

QDidNothingWrong OP ,

The thing is… the Vulcan salute is palm out. He has palm in, thumb in. It caught me off guard which was why I felt the need to come post as I couldn’t find it anywhere online.

Someology ,
@Someology@lemmy.world avatar

Nope. His palm is definitely out. He just doesn’t have his thumb extended. Other than the thumb, it’s a completely normal Vulcan salute. Perhaps Frakes had a bit of trouble with it early on and just hadn’t got his thumb out properly yet?

QDidNothingWrong OP ,

No. It is not. I’ve watched the scene a dozen times. His palm is in… facing him, and thumb is in. Even in the screenshot I posted his palm is in.

pieceofcrazy , to gaming in New rule regarding posting untagged game spoilers

I’d like to add that it would be nice to warn about spoilers about very old games too. I don’t think that should be a rule, but just nice.

The whole “dude that game came out 30 years ago” argument doesn’t make sense because not everyone plays everything (and not everyone has your age).

MisterMoo , to youshouldknow in YSK that you can edit titles on Lemmy, unlike Reddit.
@MisterMoo@kbin.social avatar

Hopefully one happy side effect of this is that it won't become a cultural thing on the Fediverse to put a typo in your post title and then have a comment section full of people all calling attention to the typo instead of the actual question/topic of the post.

techno156 ,

Although I'm curious about how they might address the "clickbait" issue of people having a massively upvoted/boosted post, and then changing the post to say something else entirely.

That seems like it might be a problem if people are allowed to edit titles.

grue , to linux in What's the longest you've stayed on a distribution?

I’ve only really used Gentoo, Debian and Ubuntu (in that order!), each for years at a time over the past two decades. I suppose it shows how progessively fewer fucks I give about the inner workings of the system.

I also tried to install a copy of… TurboLinux 6, I think? that I got from a Ham Radio swap meet as a kid sometime in the '90s, but I never got it to work.

knF , to selfhosted in Sustainable self-hosting services?

I’m hosting al my services on an old Android mobile with termux. Power consumption is ridiculous, not 100% sustainable but it is very low power. You could add solar panels and you’re done. In terms of performance, mainly for family use, I’ve never had an issue once I plugged it to an ethernet port.

abominable_panda ,

Mind telling us more about this please? What services are you running and how? Docker?

knF ,

No Docker unfortunately, it would require either to recompile the mobile Kernel or use QEMU and I believe it would have a big impact on the performances. Basically this time the approach was: what can I do with an old mobile without rooting or anything. Hardware:

  • Samsung S20
  • USB3 to Ethernet & charger port
  • 128GB SD card

Sofrware:

  • Termux (android app)
  • SSH (OpenSSH in Termux)
  • Rclone (in Termux)
  • Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Prowlarr (in proot-distro)
  • Transmission (in proot-distro)
  • Kavitha (in proot-distro)
  • Podgrab (in proot-distro)
  • Ombi (in proot-distro)
  • ntfy (in proot-distro)
  • Filebrowser (in proot-distro)
  • Vaultwarden (in proot-distro)
  • Homer with lighttpd (in proot-distro)

Since I wasn’t able to install .NET Runtime in Termux directly, I used the proot-distro (Ubuntu) and inside I’ve installed all the services. Services are started manually every time I restart the proot-distro (unfortunately I’m getting an error when installing Termux:Boot), it’s a simple script so I’m not dying over it. To keep the proot-distro alive I launch is with the screen command so I’m ensuring persistence even when the terminal is closed.

It’s not a clean solution like docker etc. but I’m consuming 5 or 10Wh of energy every day which is close to nothing and probably sustainable with a solar panel.

Every once in a while (basically when the SD is almost full) I transfer the files with rclone to an external drive where I consolidate the files.

Oh extra tip, with rclone you can create a DLNA server so you can serve the files you have download immediately (tested with VNC and Kodi)

The phone/server has still room (CPU & RAM) to go and possibly I could install HomeAssistant without any issue. Also I could add Joplin and Floccus using webdav for storage as I had in my previous server but I don’t miss them.

Any other questions, doubts, scripts, feel free to ask!

CaptainBlagbird ,
@CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world avatar

Were you able to use the phone Bluetooth in HomeAssistant?

(Or do you not have access to interfaces like that with proot-distro? I’m not at all familiar with it…)

knF ,

Unfortunately I didn’t give it a try.

I tried HA Bluetooth presence detector on my PC some time ago with not so good results and since that time I didn’t gave another go.

I saw a Termux-bluetooth package so it could be a feasible thing.
