ProfessionalBoofis , to android in How does everyone feel about Motorola phones?

Some of the best android phones, especially for the price. They seem to last forever and have good non-bloated software + unique features like shake for flashlight (why don’t other OEMS have this?). Only complaints I have are some lack of custom ROM support and sometimes wear over time. But for the price they are almost unbeatable.

emberwit ,

shake for flashlight (why don't other OEMS have this?)

As often as moto phones are praised for this feature, the reason has to be that they own a patent on this and other manufacturers are not allowed to just copy it. Can't imagine it's difficult to do with some customization though.

rigo , to nostupidquestions in Controversial topic but one that is talked about a lot on Twitter and gab.

In the U.S. this is a controversial topic online because it centers around the idea of privilege. One of the progressive viewpoints around race is CRT (critical race theory). That argues that throughout history white people have created and benefitted from a system that oppresses other races and gives themselves advantages. In my opinion that’s not very debatable. That being said I personally believe in the current day that social classes and education levels are what should be looked at more but race is a large part of the discussion. CRT is very popular with the very vocal left leaning Twitter folks and internet users.

Someone who is a proponent of CRT would argue that you can’t be racist against the “dominant” (not the word in really lookin for) race within a state/country. An easy example of this is the lack of any kind of word that equates to a racial slur for white people. There really isn’t one, because due to power dynamics throughout Americas history there hasn’t been a time where white people were the ones being persecuted against and marginalized (which is where slurs and race based insults come from generally).

Where this falls apart is that even the idea of “whiteness” has changed over the last 150 years. For a long time the Irsh, Italians, Eastern Europeans (who would now just be considered white) did have a lot of persecution against them and there was significant “racial” bias against them. In reality those immigrants had much more in common with other poor people (regardless of race). But again, an Italian immigrant still usually had it better than a black person in many parts of the country (in terms of how they were viewed by most of society).

TLDR: Can’t be racist against white people because they are the ones that “run” the system and hold the power in society. I don’t agree with this 100% but get the merits of the argument.

resurge , to asklemmy in How common is it to fly your country's flag, and how is it seen by others?
@resurge@lemmy.ml avatar

Pretty funny that coming from a Norwegian because they still have the flag out many places in my opinion :)
It’s actually one of the things that stuck out the most after I had moved there.
Especially at “hytter” (vacation cabins) I think the majority has a flag out.
Same for national day, you’ll see a bunch of flags.

Compare that to Belgium, where I’m from. Even on national day it’s a rare sight to see a flag.
And it’s only very fanatic people that will actually wave it around on the street.

The moment you’ll see most flags out is probably during the world cup.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Not really. Vacation cabins are for vacation with Norwegians not acting like Norwegians, i.e. socializing with neighbors and having the flag up indicating their precense. More often than not, the flag is used as a celebration of either a national holiday or the birthday of someone in the household. Cabin, hiking and boat culture are weird albeit common outliers of Norwegian culture.

Jag tycker också det skulle vara bra att ha en specifikt Svensk instans. Just nu använder jag den danska för inlogg. Har även sett att det finns feddit.se.

Det finns en del trådar på !selfhosted där det talas om krav för en instans.

Llamajockey , to nostupidquestions in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

Late stage capitalism You make a business and it goes well, you make some money everyone is happy.

But with time your profits will plateau or even decline. It’s natural, but businesses don’t understand that it is insane to expect a company to always turn crazy profits when the product does not evolve.

Companies like apple and Microsoft don’t worry as much because they are constantly evolving with new product.

Companies like Twitter, Facebook, reddit, Netflix have hit a wall where there really isn’t anywhere else to go so they start making shareholder centered decisions made by people who aren’t even in touch with the user base of their product.

Llamajockey , to android in How does everyone feel about Motorola phones?

Took a leap with the Motorola RAZR 5g in 2021. Liked the features and the UI was decent, very similar to a Google pixel with a few extras.

Bluetooth sucked and had issues with the phone being picky with its USB C cable.

Worst part…with only 9 months with the phone the foldable screen started to fail, shortly completely unusable.

The screen is conveniently not covered in the one year warranty.

Phone cost me $600 brand new from T-Mobile. Repairs with Motorola would be $900!

Contacted them through Twitter and ultimately they tried to give me a %15 discount lol

Never again with them

liori , to android in How does everyone feel about Motorola phones?

I’m not a person who’d be loyal to a brand. Yet Motorola consistently produces devices that turn out to be the best trade-offs (price to functionality) for me. And, so far, all these devices were pretty durable as well, though it’s not that I really put smartphones into lots of use. That’s all I can say.

anthoniix , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

Speaking from a US standpoint, the public transit sucks. The main issue where I’m at is lack of bus stops, and the bus is never on time. I’d have to walk down a highway (not interstate) to get to the bus stop, then it might not even arrive on time.

Cars are faster, most of the time. However, they still suck. Traffic in dense areas is heavy at almost all times of day where anyone is active. It’s really a failure on the US government why people dont take public transit as much.

fear , to asklemmy in What region of your country is the worst?
@fear@kbin.social avatar

Objectively for the US it might be the Kensington area of Philadelphia. It's the poorest neighborhood of a poor city that became known for a massive open drug and prostitution market. At any time of the day or night you can find tons of people stumbling through the streets out of their minds. People are frequently killed by violence and accidentally hit by cars. The most common drug there "tranq" is literally the horse tranquilizer Xylazine that is resistant to narcan.

I found two news headlines from days apart side by side that kind of signify how the entire situation is being viewed and addressed.

"Philadelphia neighborhood worries sinkhole will swallow their cars on Keim Street."

"30-foot sinkhole in Philadelphia swallows car." No kidding.

Akhuyan OP ,
@Akhuyan@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not familiar with the term unsers. However, there is a point for multiple communities. Lemmy is meant to be decentralized with no central authority, leading to multiple communities that are the same (or with similar topics) that have different rules and moderators.

As an example, the first one is based on posting AI generated images with no specific platform while the second one is to share tips, questions, and images created on Midjourney only. This shows the differences, but even if the topics were entirely the same, it would be important for choice and decentralization

conderoga , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

In the US, the state of public transit outside of a handful of (very expensive) cities is significantly slower and less reliable than taking a car. I would pin the reason for this on the shift of people outside of urban areas into suburban ones, and the lobbying power of the automotive industry to convince the government and citizens alike that cars were the right choice.

If public transit is the fastest option in the area, people do choose to take it! That’s the case for me too in the past couple of cities I’ve lived in. But most cities have a long way to go before they get there.

Aside from just talking about this from a convenience angle, a message that might help explain the issues with car dependency is how much more it costs! People that are more hesitant about public services might be easier to convince with a cost-based argument. This is a great video explaining the actual cost of car ownership.

xtremeownage , to selfhosted in Podman is awesome—and totally frustrating

Honestly, I had to use podman at work due to… issues.

Its close enough to docker, that most docker commands will work just fine. You can even alias docker as podman, and things will for the most part, just work.

HOWEVER, there are some big changes and difference. First- podmon creates a systemctl for your containers, for starting them. This- is different, and if you forget to tell it to create the service- then your containers won’t start.

My personal opinion after using it for a few years? I strongly prefer docker. It gives me very few issues. I have spent too much time troubleshooting odd things podman does.

The fake information reminds me of the last time I went to the grocery store. The cashier said to the woman in front of me something like “Thank you Mrs. Smith” so I assumed she was a regular and the cashier knew her. When I checked out I fished out my rewards card and the cashier scanned it and said “Thank you Mr. Richards, have a nice day.” I almost said “Thanks but who is Richards?” But then I remembered I am Richards, that is the fake name I filled out years ago but no one has ever used it (and are they supposed to?)
