To be fair CasualUK was the only sub keeping me active on reddit, even before the API changes. It’s gonna be an adjustment getting my news etc from other sources, but so far, this community here is hitting the spot pretty well. I’d much rather be here if that’s how quickly they caved :(

Yeah, I did use that in the past, but I got bored of the same sources. I think that's why I liked Reddit for news, because it came from an un-curated source that I had no control over, so I felt like I was getting every view and not a news outlets constant slant on things.

tessellatedtangerine ,

yes, and the ability to comment and discuss different viewpoints is so valuable to the way I consume news, because it allows me to understand the impact of the news on communities I am not part of.

FalseDiamond , to selfhosted in Proxmox/Docker is inferior to Unraid

Proxmox doesn’t really do Docker containers well (yet, or maybe will at all). It does do LXC (both of those are OCI containers at heart), but that’s not as well supported or as versatile as Docker/Podman. I’m more than sure Unraid is great at what it does, but it’s not a VMWare killing virtualization solution in production like Proxmox is with its great support for redundancy, versatility and relative ease of use if you come from a Linux background. OTOH Proxmox is not Portainer. It’s for VMs and VM-like containers, at least for now. Supposedly kernel 6.something helps a lot with OverlayFS support in nested containers, but I can’t go to bleeding edge kernels in production to test that. Still, are you sure you need an IP per container?

johnnixon OP ,

Pihole seems pretty unhappy about sharing an IP address/ports with it’s Ubuntu host, so yeah, I’m set on giving it it’s own IP.

FalseDiamond ,

More than fair. I do have a Proxmoxy solution if you want it, which is to run it as an LXC, but it does seem that something more container-oriented may be your best bet rather than sticking with proxmox if you don’t need the extra stuff it offers.

Here’s an absolutely incredible resource when it comes to home running Proxmox LXCs: tteck.github.io/Proxmox/

Pihole is offered (spelled Pi-hole), as well as a ton of other useful services.

I am not aware, but the problem will likely be that the images are loaded from a lot of different instances and therefore very hard to detect. Maybe the specific pict-rs path could be detected via a reg-ex though.

MrsDoyle , to ukcasual in Just spent my lunch break giving my wife a buzzcut because she mixed up thinning scissors and normal.

My sister was a hairdresser and she once thought she was using her thinning scissors and took a big chunk out of a client’s hair. Another time, she stopped to contemplate and accidentally stabbed herself under the chin with the very sharp scissors. Bled all over the client’s collar before she realised. I think it was pretty much a blessing when she developed an allergy to some of the colour/perm chemicals and had to give it up.

bookish1303 , to startrek in Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x01 "The Broken Circle"

I think this got things off to a reasonable start, but it doesn't feel like the strongest episode out of the gate. Maybe it's because the show deliberately chooses not take on the cliffhanger of the last season in the first episode. Starting the season with only part of the cast undertaking the mission I think also makes the episode feel a bit slight.

It's also a bit of a darker episode than the last season, but I'm not sure if engaging with the Klingon civil war aftermath is actually necessary in this episode. In fact, leaving out the Klingon stuff here would make it a bit less stodgy to me. I guess there is some curiosity as to what SNW characters were doing during the war, but it really feels like here, the only reason they framed this entire episode around the war was so that M'Benga and Chapel could juice themselves up with a substance that they never quite introduce before using it and Die Hard Klingons for a chunk of the episode. There's maybe some M'Benga trauma, but giving the character another trauma moment where some (particularly Ortegas) remain comparatively lightly characterized feels...meh.

It's probably all the Discovery elements, both in plot and in set design on screen, that make me feel this way, but I was hoping that Discovery would learn the best lessons from Strange New Worlds. This episode has me slightly worried that instead of that, Strange New Worlds may be learning some bad lessons from Discovery. That said I'm hoping things get better across the season. I thought this was good but just not quite what I wanted from the season opener.

Luccajan , to patientgamers in What console do you still turn on from time to time today?

I often play on the Wii with my family. The joy cons on the switch are too small and have too many buttons for my (grand)parents to push. They keep pressing the home button accidentally.

zeroscan , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

I’d guess because for a lot of us in the USA, public transportation is insufficient to meet our needs. I’d love to take a train from home to work, but there’s no train line that’s anywhere near my house. They’re building one that’ll go near my work, but it’s not done yet. Busses are available, I suppose…but the time it’d take to get from home to work or back would be a lot longer than driving takes, even in heavy traffic, given that I’d have to transfer several times.

For longer trips, again, the infrastructure just isn’t there. To visit my sister, for instance, requires taking a bus if I want to take the public transportation option. My (step)son takes the bus to go see his dad (who lives in the same city as my sister) since he doesn’t like driving, and it takes a good 2 extra hours compared to driving. We should have train service, but no…Scott Fucking Walker killed the project back in 2010 when he got elected governor of Wisconsin.

They’ve added a sticky explaining (sort of) their reasoning. And also apologizing to those who think they should remain closed. I was going to cut and paste some parts but then the 5 minute daily screen timer I’ve imposed for ‘the app that shall not be named’ ran out.

Something about standing in front of a dam with a sieve.

JimmyAllnighter ,

Greetings from upside-down land. Here’s a copy-paste of the sticky:

The mod team have always refrained from joining in Reddit activism but we felt strongly enough to join the API blackout to try to preserve the apps that drew us to Reddit initially. Our roles in this community will become more difficult as a result of this policy change, and accessibility for users with special requirements is severely lacking on Reddit's main application.
It is clear to us from Spez's leaked email that he remains unabashed by the pushback from the communities and is resilient in pushing forward with the policy change. With communities much larger and much more imposing than CasualUK dropping out of the blackout, it has started to feel like standing in front of a dam with a sieve.. The whole time, the thing that really suffers is this community. There is an enormous support network in this subreddit for those who need it, and we want to continue to encourage and foster that spirit. This has always been a refuge from the goings on around the rest of the platform and we do not with the userbase to suffer as a result of Reddit's determination to close the third party sites.
We apologise unreservedly to those who think we should remain offline indefinitely, and we welcome those who want just want a place to talk about their day, or to mention if someone has done a shit in your bin.

AineLasagna , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?
@AineLasagna@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Speaking as someone who lives in the US, the reason why people “prefer” it is because it’s embedded into the culture that public transportation is for poor people- temporarily embarrassed millionaires and all that. And the reason for that cultural programming is because auto manufacturers and airlines have consistently lobbied against any improvements to public transportation from the very beginning, and even had a hand in specifically designing cities to require cars. China has bullet trains that could get us safely and comfortably from one side of the country to the other in 4 hours. Most EU countries have safe, cheap, accessible public transportation that EVERYONE uses.

At the end of the day, it’s just another capitalist ploy.

The_iceman_cometh ,

It’s really not that different from anywhere else. Almost anywhere in the world, people who can afford cars usually buy cars.

@Gerryflap@lemmy.world avatar

Currently using a Nokia 7.2

Best qualities:

  • Cheap
  • Has a heaphone jack
  • Does smartphone things
  • Fell like 5 times from more than a meter of height into a stone floor and is somehow still fine (more luck than skill probably)

Worst qualities:

  • Not the fastest
  • No more updates :(
  • Randomly turns off about once every month at night while charging, which forced me to buy a backup alarm

Before this I was using a Moto G5 plus, which was a bit of a quirky phone. Before that I used my Nexus 5, which ultimately started suffering the power button issues. My Nexus 5 is still a backup phone that I use sometimes, and every time I touch it I wish that they’d release a new Nexus 5 just like the old one but with with newer hardware specs and a better battery. I love how light and small it is, I still love the screen, and I love how it looks.

From this you can probably gather that I don’t upgrade phones too often. I also don’t have any other Android devices. I did at one point dabble a bit into Android development and made a few silly apps, but that’s many years ago at this point.

For my PC’s I usually use Linux where I can, and Window$ for gaming and music production (because sadly that’s the only way to make these things work reliably).

Just switched back to Android a few days ago after using the iPhone for quite some time. Customization and control were my favorite reasons for Android in the past and it stayed the same. I use a Pixel 7 Pro with GrapheneOS. The fact that I even have an option to use a different OS that focuses on privacy is amazing.
