felbane , to selfhosted in Selfhost and play Spotify playlists

There’s Finamp, a music client for Jellyfin with offline playback. I’ve not used it personally yet, but with Spotify ratcheting up prices again I’m in the process of switching to self-hosting my music library. When that’s up and running it’s at the top of my list for Android clients.

Bluefruit ,

Jellyfin was my go to as well. It was really nice to play with and finamp was as well. Once setup it was just as easy and nice to use as Spotify without all the ads and Spotify randomly playing songs after i finish a podcast episode.

peregus OP ,

Good to know, thanks! Do you know a way to download the Spotify playlist in Jellyfin without the need to do it manually?

Dave , to selfhosted in Selfhost and play Spotify playlists
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I’m not sure I really get what you are looking for when you say “selfhosted”.

Yes there are self-hosted music platforms, but you bring your own music files.

Maybe you are looking for something like Spotube (available on F-Droid) that let’s you download music (I believe it uses Spotify search then downloads the music from YouTube).

Or maybe you just need to find a tool to download music from Spotify (like zotify) then put them into a self hosted music platform like Navidrome or Jellyfin?

peregus OP ,

Sorry for the late reply. I mean a service that let me stream music, that let me listen to music offline and that let me download Spotify Playlists without the need to download every single song manually.

Dave ,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I don’t know that the specific thing you want is available (Spotify but it has better downloading).

However, the tool I linked (zotify) does let you download playlists from Spotify (as files). Then you can put the files into a self hosted tool for the actual listening. If you’re mainly using Spotify and trying to get songs to be synced to another service for offline use then that seems like a lot of work.

If you’re willing to pay, you could just try a different service (Tidal, Qobuz, or Apple/Google offerings) and see if you like them better.

rekabis , (edited ) to asklemmy in Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s?

Control your sex drive or it will be used to control you, and invariably very much against your own best interests.

I got lucky, and found my own partner quite early on (28 years together, now). But I did not stop observing other couples around me, and those men who failed to adequately control their own sex drive were the ones who almost always were taken advantage of and manipulated against their own best interests.

Ironically, RP (and to an extent, BP) information is a great base to understand how you can and will be manipulated, with MGTOW a good framework to insulate yourself against manipulation. Just understand that blaming others is a toxic and counterproductive path, seek to improve yourself to make RP/BP truths work with you and your best interests, and not against you.

Redpill and Blackpill, I’m assuming.

Incel-speak.

Interesting how the first thing you reach for is the ad hominem of tying anything RP/BP to being “incel-speak”, in an attempt to silence any discussion in favour of the ideological narrative.

Yes, there are men in those communities who are despondent of ever having any “success” as society has defined it. That they face massive systemic barriers to success that they cannot affect, and extreme social punishments for failing to achieve that externally-imposed definition of “success”.

Throwing blame onto those who impose the rules is an understandable response by these men. An Immature, counterproductive, and inappropriate response, yes. But considering so many men have built their entire identity around societal lies and behaviours that were explicitly engineered to harm their chances of “success”, it is hardly a surprising response.

That’s why MGTOW exists - to show them that there is a path to life fulfilment and even happiness that does not hang from the sharp hooks of female (and societal!) approval. That there is a way to live that does not involve external blame and self-defeating hatred.

But most any RP/BP forum I have ever stuck my nose into has also had a fair amount of direct links to actual scientific research and/or real-world evidence which supports the female nature and behaviour that they have been experiencing and observing themselves. It doesn’t mean that they had any legitimacy in complaining or being upset about it, only that it wasn’t all in their head - it’s an actual IRL thing.

In other words, RP/BP is the “detox” from the societal brainwashing and psy-ops manipulation that most men have been subjected to all their lives, allowing them to truly understand why women do and act in the way that they do. MGTOW is the recovery that refocuses their attitude to intrinsic motivation and happiness, allowing them to live freely without any need for women.

And of course, a large proportion of women find that last sentence deeply frightening. A man who don’t need no woman? Who can live entirely on his own, happy and content? Heresy! It must be suppressed with all the social/verbal violence that can be brought to bear!

Hence, the derogatory term “incel”. It exists for no other reason than to shame men into compliance, as a thought-terminating cliché.

richieadler ,

Recommending Men Going Their Own Way doesn’t bode well in regards to your opinion, so… OP, please disregard.

rekabis , (edited )

Recommending Men Going Their Own Way doesn’t bode well in regards to your opinion

So working on yourself and improving yourself, building self-respect, setting personal standards that you refuse to compromise on, and focusing on intrinsic motivation is somehow “not boding well”?

What a weird way of punching down.

And for decades now, women have been screaming at men to “leave me alone”, for men to not bother them or approach them or hit on them or engage with them in any way unless engaged with first… yet you have issues with men who do exactly that? You have problems with men whose entire philosophy is to ignore women in exactly the ways that women have been demanding?

Again, what a strangely hypocritical criticism.

The entire point of MGTOW is to give men a path out of “incel-dom”, to show them that there is an alternative path to fulfilment and peace and effective happiness that is entirely self-achievable because it does not hang on the sharp hooks of female approval. That any man can fully divest themselves of this cycle of bigotry and external blame and the bigoted societal expectations of men to focus on what truly matters - themselves.

And in our society where ¾ of all suicide victims are men, we desperately need more men to focus on themselves, first.

All names are from Social Security card applications for births that occurred in the United States after 1879. Note that many people born before 1937 never applied for a Social Security card, so their names are not included in our data. For others who did apply, our records may not show the place of birth, and again their names are not included in our data.
All data are from a 100% sample of our records on Social Security card applications as of March 2024.

skullgiver , to asklemmy in Need help picking out a heating solution for the winter.
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

Lol they really started calling portable ACs “micro heat pumps”. For fuck’s sake, a heat pump is just an AC with a different valve, invented ages ago, running in reverse!

Air based ACs/heat pumps can only work in a limited range. Modern coolant is quite effective at getting higher ranges, but for 0F you may need something like a heat pump dug into the ground to heat effectively. Still, for most days, these “micro heat pumps” should work pretty well.

Like with portable ACs (as they are the same devices), look for models with two hoses. The models with one single hose will pump out cold air, creating negative pressure inside your house that will suck in cold air from outside again. With a two hose solution, the air that gets cooled down/gets the heat sucked out of will be pumped back out immediately. For some cheap units with a single hose you may be able to convert them into a double hose design with 3D printing, duct tape, and messing around, but you should check if that’s possible before purchasing such a unit.

Don’t fall for those Amazon scams that sell amazing coolers/heaters for just a few bucks. They’re usually tiny, and at most produce a warm/cold breeze to keep your hands or face cold/warm. If you’re going with resistive heat (easy, cheap, portable, but half as effective as a heat pump in most scenarios), get one of those big units, not the Amazon shit that’ll burn your house down.

If you haven’t already, invest in keeping the heat inside as well. Door strips and better window glass can save a whole lot more heat than a portable heater will give you if your house isn’t insulated well. Find out where the drafts are and get rid of them (don’t get rid of ventilation all together, though, obviously).

If you need to selectively heat your home, keep an eye on your piping. Turning off the heat in a few rooms may save you money, but if your pipes freeze and your house floods after they burst, you’ll be spending every cent you’ve saved on repairing damages.

As always with electric heat, watch out for overloading your sockets. Resistive heat will easily pull a couple thousand watts out of the wall, and if you’re not using 220V sockets, that may cause the wires inside your wall to heat up (but not in the good way) or even melt. All heaters worth their salt are high-powered electrical devices that should not be plugged into sockets or power strips that aren’t rated for the total load these devices and anything else plugged into the same circuit may induce. The same goes for plugging high wattage devices into smart plugs (which you could use to get something like a thermostat effect going): make sure they’re rated for the wattage you’re subjecting them to. Oh, and please use a grounded socket, preferably one protected by a GFCI.

Read the manual of whatever heater you end up buying. They’re not very interesting, but they usually come with at least one “I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to do that” safety warning that could save your life.

Chozo ,

It's even worse, because my understanding is that "Khaleesi" doesn't actually mean "queen", but would more accurately mean "concubine/wife of the king/khal". I believe the queenship is only implied after the death of the khal.

ech ,

Not really implied by the term itself, since after the death of the khal the khaleesi are basically exiled to the capital. Daenerys only brought greater meaning to the title when she used it in her conquests.

Chozo ,

Thanks for that clarification!
