Using vanilla gnome and comparing about empty task bar is a bit strange.

beeng , to linux in Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?

Gnome, 2screens, 3 workspaces.

Heavy user of Dock number shortcuts, as well as keyboard swap workspace shortcuts and window resize/splits.

Discipline is good for workspace organisation, I know which “space” contains which groups of applications.

i wasn’t able to. Just lut them up on github. but now i have nix so i can just set up flake and git clone. Got my configs.

vatra , to gaming in What’s one of your favorite game soundtracks?

Having finally finished Horizon Forbidden West last night, I’ve got to choose that. Instant favourite for me. Nostalgic moments when the theme kicked in in one of its altered versions, and the credits just completely floored me. Stuck around for the whole 30+ mins. Wonderful.

Away from that, Mass Effect always needs a mention!

AugustMetronome ,

Same, Forbidden West had an absolutely banger soundtrack. Atmospheric and exciting, I put it on sometimes when I’m working to make the tasks feel more adventurous

mundane , to linux in Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?

I keep my files in a repo on gitlab and use yadm to sync them.

Yadm is a wrapper around git, so you have all the standard git commands plus some extra to work with templating and encryption etc.

I use usb stick with Ventoy. I copy it into .config and add a line for aliassrc into .bashrc and I’m all set.

fluxx , to linux in How to accurately measure laptop battery life in Linux?

Can’t help you directly, but powertop can be used to monitor/tweak momentary power usage.

czak OP ,

Thanks, I do like powertop. I think it’s pretty good for short measurements, e.g. over 30 seconds:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">% sudo powertop --time=30
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">The battery reports a discharge rate of 4.17 W
</span><span style="color:#323232;">The energy consumed was 125 J
</span><span style="color:#323232;">The estimated remaining time is 11 hours, 4 minutes
</span>

But in the real world I will not be getting 11 hours of runtime. The moment I start a browser or play a video, power consumption goes way up.

l3mming , (edited )

If you’re technically inclined, a simple bash script with a for loop could dump the time and discharge rate to a text file every minute. Then you could copy/paste that into LibreOffice calc and do yourself some pretty graphs, or whatever.

edit: just found a tool called powerstat which looks like it does sampling over longer intervals.

sudo apt install powerstat

czak OP ,

Interesting, hadn’t heard of powerstat. I’ll be checking that, thanks!

Atemu ,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, no program can accurately predict how you are going to use your laptop in the next hours. The best you can do is sample a given reference period and assume it’ll be the same but you have already noted the problem with that.

I’d recommend you monitor total power draw while using your laptop. It’s inversely proportiaonal to battery life: If you could reach 10h at 5W, you’d only reach 5h at 10W, 2.5h at 20W and so on; you can think of it as a metric for battery drain.

czak OP ,

Agreed, that sounds like the way to go. I was hoping there was already something to do the monitoring for me :)

@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I suspect speedometers are never completely accurate. So instead of an exact number, they’ll use a needle and you can guess how fast you’re approximately going

crunchpaste ,
@crunchpaste@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This. They are actually not accurate because of regulations.

Ace Combat, mainly Ace Combat 5 but all of them are well known for their soundtracks.

More recently WARNO has excellent music so far, even though most of it was licensed by Eugen from third parties so it doesn’t really count as a soundtrack specific to the game.

beeng , to selfhosted in How do you handle secrets in home automation?

Environment variables. If they’re in my network, that has no open ports to the internet, I’ve got plenty more problems.

Even a dev machine, think about how many env vars a normal dev has, plenty to loose.

Secrets management tool for self hosting on my level would bring more complexity for little gain.

Bash scripts etc can be uploaded to open repo and not share secrets which is what I want.

So we have decentralised versions or Twitter, Reddit and YouTube? What a great time this is.

001100010010 , (edited )
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Meh, decentralized youtube alternatives have practically nothing interesting.

Social media and forums, I can see them getting replaced. Social media and forums are about the people, powered by discussion amongst peers. Decentralized Social platforms will thrive if there’s enough people. A video platform? Videos take a lot more effort and only a small percentage of users are really “content creators”. These content creators typically want to get paid for so much effort they put in to the videos, so it’s really unlikely a decentralized platform can provide adequate compensation. Youtube ain’t going away anytime soon whether you like it or not.

TLDR; Video Platforms =/= Social medias and Forums.

rustyriffs ,

Interesting, what are your thoughts on the ‘piped’ youtube front end that I’ve been seeing on here?

001100010010 ,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That is still Youtube. Google can take down videos they don’t like. The point of decentralization is to spread power so that no single entity can censor anything. (Although, collectively, they can still stop unwanted content, such as hate speech, but not something that one instance admin can do. People can always repost to another instance.) Using a front-end to access Youtube doesn’t not change the fact that Google is still in control. I mean, I could use Firefox + uBlock Origin + a VPN to browse Youtube and achieve the same thing as whatever front-end you use.

Kichae ,

On the other hand, more and more video creators on YouTube make the bulk of their money off of Patreon, rather than YouTube ads, and if it were possible to increase their Patreon subscriptions by posting to PeerTube as well as YouTube, interesting things could happen.

That would really surface the cost of video hosting, though

marfey ,

Most Podcasts live off of Patreon and no compensation from hosting services. And still they are out there. I don’t see the difference to videos. The only thing youtube has over peertube is visibility. But one can argue peertube in combination with some other fediverse service like Mastodon or Lemmy can fix this and give you more visibility for your videos.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

More than that too, there's also Bookwyrm (Goodreads), Pixelfed (Instagram) and others.

Kichae ,

And Instagram. PixelFed's really good.

Oh, and Goodreads. BookWyrm doesn't get enough love.

There's also Mobilizon, a federated events calendar and groups platform.

And a whole bunch of other stuff, but, like PeerTube, they're somewhat content sparse at the moment.

I had a VW Tiguan that had both, but the digital one didn’t poll very often so it was incredibly unreliable. My Audi Q7 has both too, but the analog one is on a digital display, which is kind of weird to think about. Like a computer using an analog clock.
