omarciddo , to technology in Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?

It’s hardly been 24 hours, but this is the most engaged I’ve felt in an online space in years. I’ve gone on a k.bin/Lemmy/Mastodon tear over the past day, exploring instances and looking for the one that I vibe with the most. So far I’ve been very happy with Beehaw as my home base, and love that I still have access to the communities on the other instances as well. It takes a slight bit of effort to find communities and make sure that I’m subscribed to them on this account, but I’ve actually found some satisfaction in the process.

Sure, there’s a low volume of content compared to the old place, but if I wanted a constant barrage of content I could just go back to RSS readers and have my fill. It’s the discussion and sense of connection that has made it worth investing my time here.

fcuks , to reddit in Is there any feedback of the current blackout? Feels like everything will be over soon and it's going on like before.

I just saw this, highlighting my own

"In an internal memo sent Monday afternoon to Reddit staff, CEO Steve Huffman addressed the recent blowback directed at the company, telling employees to block out the “noise” and that the ongoing blackout of thousands of subreddits will eventually pass."

Jamoke , to selfhosted in How do you guys have your music streaming setup?
@Jamoke@lemmy.themainframe.org avatar

I use Roon ARC to self-host my library. It is paid, but, I bought the lifetime subscription because there is really no other music app that has the features Roon has.

Other than that, I have HiBy R3 Pro that is useless for Bluetooth, and when I’m hiking I want Bluetooth.

evil_opossum , to nostupidquestions in Is it normal to start reading a book but then suddenly realize that you have no idea what's going on in the plot because you have been reading the words but ignoring their meaning?
@evil_opossum@lemmy.world avatar

This is why I have a hard time getting into or even reading books in general. I just… stop processing.

you might get some utility out of this userscript: sh.itjust.works/post/70273. check the screenshot and see if it helps scratch that itch…

ubergeek77 , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?
@ubergeek77@lemmy.ubergeek77.chat avatar
  • I can build my own ROM and add any tweaks I want to the source
  • Full filesystem access, not the circus act iOS is running with their "file management"
  • I can run any browser I want, download any file I want
  • I can sideload any app I want, and install open source apps from F-Droid
  • I can use projects like ReVanced to install modified apps effortlessly, and don’t have to go through the AltStore/Apple Developer BS to install simple things like uYou
  • I can entirely replace my home screen with a different launcher app if I wanted to

Is criticism of the royal family allowed here/withducks or is it also run by bootlickers?

Izzy , to android in What phone are you using?
@Izzy@lemmy.world avatar

I have a Pixel 4a because I refuse to spend more than $200 on a phone. The battery is starting to not last very long so either I am going to replace the battery or get a Pixel 6a for $200. I’d really prefer to not need a new phone because I like the headphone jack.

realcaseyrollins , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

Because Android is technically open source and the hardware is free enough that I can install an alternative OS if I want to.

Also, the phones are cheaper and have headphone jacks!

fede , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

Sideloading. And I refuse to pay Apple’s insane prices tbh.

gimlithepirate , to reddit in So, how do we think this ends?

I think the mod tools are what will blow reddit up ultimately. It’s why I’m here.

The third party apps are a hard self own, but I don’t use reddit because of third party apps. I use third party apps because the reddit official app is… Special. If they’d forced me to sue their app I would be annoyed, but still interested in reddit.

If you destroy the key tools that enable volunteer moderators to manage communities, the community will die. Example: two of my favorite subs were legaladvice, and bestoflegaladvice. Both required extensive moderating to function (and even then, it was prone to shit shows particularly at LA). No mod tools would make it unmoderatable… Which turns you into Voat pretty fast.

So, I don’t think reddit dies July 1. I think reddit spends the next year turning into Twitter, and lemmy has to run as fast as it can to scale.

Hopefully, this is my last post on lemmy talking about reddit, but I doubt I’m that lucky.
