iturnedintoanewt , to linux in Europe is doing so well regarding Linux smartphones

Are these true Linux phones? Or are we talking Android loader/drivers then launching a Linux session? So far the only two devices i know to be true Linux phones are the Pinephone and the Librem.

HarriPotero ,
@HarriPotero@lemmy.world avatar

Jolla is the successor to Nokia’s Maemo/Meego OS which was proper Linux. Jolla does have seamless Android emulation. They don’t do their own phones anymore, though.

Ew0 ,

This, if there’s a successor (an actual working one), it’s probably SailfishOS. Runs pretty well on my Xperia 10 III and the UI is super nice :)

smpl ,
@smpl@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Is Maemo Leste not working?

Ew0 ,

Whoosh, forgot about that :)

smpl ,
@smpl@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I honestly don’t know how well it works though, because sadly my N900 has a broken screen I can’t remove because of screws with broken heads. Any tips on how to remove those tiny tiny screws are most welcome! :)

Ew0 ,

If it’s stripped screws then maybe try different screw bits? One might get some traction. or maybe try unscrewing it with an elastic band in between that might help.

If that doesn’t work you could try some screw-extracting pliers.

If that really doesn’t work you could also try putting a small dot of superglue on the screw, let the screwdriver head dry in it then try turning it.

If that really, really doesn’t work you could try using a rotary tool/dremel/knife to cut a small line that you could use a flathead to unscrew it with.

Or do you mean like the actual head has come off? :o

smpl ,
@smpl@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

No no, the head is just stripped. I’ll try with something to give traction (even though I think I already did), but your idea with some superglue is something I hadn’t considered. Cutting the screw head seems risky, but if everything else fails I guess it’s better to REALLY break the phone than it is to have it boxed away unused. Thanks for giving me hope. Next problem is where to find a replacement screw, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it ;)

Ew0 ,

Fair, yep I’ve tried a few of those methods in the past, if you’re really worried maybe take it to a specialist? I doubt it would cost much for a quick job. Good luck!

Replying from my Xperia 10 IV.

It’s purchase was a mistake.

I’m stuck on Android :(

Ew0 ,

Can you not sell it and grab a III? They are pretty cheap used/refurb now - I got 2 in good condition for £200 each.

CAPSLOCKFTW , (edited )

Volla has two official images, one is ubuntu mobile

iturnedintoanewt , (edited )

Yeah but is it a low level android or is it a full Linux boot? As mentioned, the only two phones I know of that boot full Linux from scratch with Linux drivers are the Pinephone (and the Pinephone Pro) and the Librem 5. Both with their own set of issues.

CAPSLOCKFTW ,

It is 100% Linux with 0% Android. I had a Volla Phone X for a few weeks.

Bondrewd OP ,

Indeed they need Halium for it. On the other hand compare them to the nexuses and oneplus ones you had to put up with a few years ago.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

Agreed, halium and Ubuntu Touch aren’t true Linux phones in my book. To be a true Linux phone you need to run mainline, or at least very close to it (pmOS forks, Megi kernel, etc) and do things the Linux way not the Android way (KMS/DRM/Mesa stack, ALSA/Pulse/Pipewire stack). There are some phones that are getting there thanks to postmarketOS like the OnePlus 6/6T but the ones you listed are the main true Linux phones.

Typing this from my PinePhone Pro running postmarketOS.

iturnedintoanewt ,

How’s that working these days? From time to time I dust off mine, try it a bit, and see that while there’s progress, it’s way too unstable for a daily driver. PPP even more so than old PP. I’m using a Pixel 7 running Graphene these days…

TuneAFish , to ukcasual in What are you playing Wednesday

I bought an emulation handheld so I’m revisiting my past.

Played Codenames with friends at the bar yesterday. It’s a fun and frustrating came of word association.

Going to try to get the handheld set up on the TV for “level or life” shenanigans later in the week. If not, there’s an agility game where you stack little plastic chairs that is more fun than it has any right to be after a few.

Ah excellent. I got an Anbernic RG35XX a couple of months ago and am loving it. Had a couple of spare hours at the weekend and just did some grinding for magic in Final Fantasy VI. Nothing else. Just some grinding. Loved it.

TuneAFish ,

I got the 35xx set up too. That and a Steam Deck seems to be the dream for full emulation + indie, which is all I play anymore. But, it’s £X00 away which could be better spent.

I bought an RG351P years ago and I love, I’m currently away for the week and took it with me, been playing Castlevania Symphony of the Night.

I am tempted to get an new unit, although I really like the GBA style form factor.

Am also looking forward to getting home and playing some more Tears of the Kingdom.

HowlsSophie , to technology in Ex-Facebook Users, What Do You Use Now?

Nothing. I never stayed in contact with people and regularly downsized my friend list. I found that I was keeping people as friends but hadn’t talked to or messaged them in years. People I actually talk to have my number and I have theirs. Scrolling through people’s lives kept me from reaching out and having real conversations with people so…yeah.

lemmyatom ,

This. Ever since I quit facebook, I find myself reaching out to friends who I care about rather than just following their feed. I also find when we hang out, there’s more for us to discuss and we cherish each other’s company more because we no longer have the convenience of staying hyper updated about each other. It’s the whole idea of absence makes the heart grow fonder. My advice to everyone is to stop relying on social media to keep up with people and go have some real relationships with those you care about. You’ll find yourself much happier.

HowlsSophie ,

Exactly. I remember I used to try to have the most “friends” possible but at some point it was like “yeah I don’t actually talk to these people and I don’t think I will.” Used to also keep FB for certain groups I was part of but in the end, there was just no point.

Intel NUCs are known for that purpose, a lot of plex builds are based on the iGPU

+1 to this

Some models also have programmable LEDs in the front that you can use to display the status of the system or app/service

Insig , to nostupidquestions in Data privacy: how to counter the "I have nothing to hide" argument?

I just came to the realisation, that all those cold calls where no one says anything are probably just recording for recreating your voice sigh…

Jikiya ,

It’s possible, but it’s mostly scammers, and possibly a real company verifying that the number is actually an active one, that they should call back in the future when a scammer is available. Also makes the phone number more valuable when they sell it on to the next scamming “company”.

woshang , to nostupidquestions in Data privacy: how to counter the "I have nothing to hide" argument?

It’s a basic human right, and if you’re in a restrictive country like North Korea or China, data privacy means everything because individuals don’t know if they’re saying something wrong that could put them in danger.

A friend from college who is Chinese told me that whenever they go back to China for holidays, they have to clear out all the chat history on WeChat, a messaging app commonly used in China. This is because sometimes Chinese guards pick someone’s phone and check for any content that could be seen as critical of China.

Jikiya ,

It’s already been recorded by then. But I guess they’ll need to send someone out to collect you, instead of you swimming into their net.

raltoid , to nostupidquestions in Why do people self-harm?

One important thing to note is that for many it hurts a lot less than you’d think, basically feeling like a light scratch.

Wikipedia has more detailed information and sources:

Those who engage in self-harm face the contradictory reality of harming themselves while at the same time obtaining relief from this act. It may even be hard for some to actually initiate cutting, but they often do because they know the relief that will follow. For some self-harmers this relief is primarily psychological while for others this feeling of relief comes from the beta endorphins released in the brain.

Endorphins are endogenous opioids that are released in response to physical injury, acting as natural painkillers and inducing pleasant feelings, and in response to self-harm would act to reduce tension and emotional distress. Many self-harmers report feeling very little to no pain while self-harming and, for some, deliberate self-harm may become a means of seeking pleasure.

TimeMuncher2 , to techsupport in My phone installed 6 apps on its own

Yup, if your phone region is set to India, Redmi phones start installing lot of useless apps. I used some universal Android debloater on GitHub to remove all the spyware apps. Even disabled miui update, since it is the main reason these apps are installed.
