Public dns names have A records pointing to haproxy vps, which proxies to home over tunnel, and AAAA records pointing straight to home (I have static ipv6 prefix, but no static ipv4 address)
Unlike that exodus, the Lemmigration isn’t for censorship and freedom of speech issues (inevitably drawing in the most toxic, bigoted and hateful section of Reddit to voat); it’s because of reduced accessibility and usability, alongside the visible contempt that Reddit’s administration has for their users (free content providers) and moderators (free content curators).
This means the people fleeing Reddit’s shores aren’t doing so because they want to recreate fatpeoplehate elsewhere; it’s because Reddit won’t let blind people moderate their own communities.
I have so many fond memories of Jurassic Park Trespasser. I remember my dad picked it up for me right around launch time. I had read the previews in PC Gamer magazine and was fully into the hype.
The game was really attempting VR before we had VR. There was no HUD. Your lifebar was a heart tattoo on your chest that emptied as you took damage. There was no ammo counter for your guns. Your character would say things like, “feels full” or “feels a little light” to give you an estimate of ammo remaining.
The biggest flaw, apart from the broken AI for dinosaurs, was just like VR, you had to aim manually. You could turn and twist your gun freely which meant you had to aim down the sights. In VR, in 2023, with motion controllers, this is amazing. But in 1998, with a mouse and keyboard, it was really awkward. It’s a game I never finished.; Probably never even got close to finishing. But I was still in awe of the world they built and freedom offered in 1998.
XMPP (with omemeo) is the classic (and also what FB messenger uses behind the scenes, without omemo), Matrix is the new kid on the block taking over. Both are decentralized sorta like the fediverse (but separate from said fediverse.)
Used to use Signal, but they’re removing SMS support so everyone might as well switch to matrix. Wickr was bought by amazon (and they say they won’t ruin it, riiiight), so that’s out. Idk enough about briar or session, and telegram isn’t as secure as people seem to think.
Don’t stay at a shitty job just because you’re scared of new things or because you think it’s good pay. Put yourself out there and interview. Some interviews will suck, some job offers will be insultingly low, but eventually you’ll find something better. And guess what? Maybe that one will end sooner than you’d like, but you’re already practiced up and know how to interview and write a resume, so you can just dust yourself off and move on.
Also, if you get a huge pay raise, try to live at the same expense level as the old job. Maybe get a treat here and there, maybe fix that problem in your house or car you’ve been putting off, but don’t blow all the extra money. Save some in case that new job ends and it takes a little longer to find more work than you’d like.
Bluetooth for audio might be the worst implementation of a specification every devised. Ridiculous lag, no multipoint connection, no ability to manage or negotiate connections from the device, limited ability to define the connection (audio vs headset among the culprits). BT for audio just seems like a cruel joke.
I see people listing things I’ve never heard about…I thought I had spent a considerable amount of time on the old sub and knew stuff. Guess I gotta hit the books.
Right now though I’m hosting everything on a 2012 Mac Mini that’s running Proxmox.

Nothing crazy but cool stuff to learn in my day to day. I want more hardware but I’m about to buy a house. It’s crazy how much I’m throwing at an 11 year old computer and it’s handling it all quite well.
I’ve got a slightly different version of this problem. I work from home, and if my wife drives my car out of or into the driveway while I’m on a call, even if I’m in my office in the basement, my phone will disconnect my earbuds and route my audio to my car.
Not being able to entertain ideas. “What would the world be like with 100% renewable energy?” “Would basic healthcare for every person help our country?”
I tried to explain the 4 day work week to someone that gets paid by the hour. You make the same money but work 4 days a week instead of 5. Insisted he got paid less. Had to explain like a Bingo card with a Free Space, 1 day he is paid even if he stays home.
I know it sounds cliché and… Well… Wanky, but it’s true.
Trying and failing will always feel better than just giving up.
Like someone? Say something. They could humilate you and literally kick you in the balls and in 5 years i guarantee you’ll regret it less than if you say nothing. (This is not an excuse to be creepy. If they say NO, then hear the NO. Shit happens. Move on.)
Have an idea for something cool? Try to make it reality. The sad truth is, honestly it’s probably going to fail, but at least you will be able to say you tried.
And that 1 fucking time I’m wrong… My god, that 1 time. That’s where the best that life has to offer exists. But first…
You have to try…
So ask yourself, really. What’s the worst that could happen? … Aaaand now ask yourself… What’s the best that could happen?
