Madrigal , to nostupidquestions in Has anyone here ever been permanently banned from reddit? If so, is there any way to get unbanned?

Yes, thanks to moderators who abuse the system, and lazy admins who don’t hold them to account.

Reddit uses fingerprinting techniques to track you across accounts. You need to look into defeating these tactics in order to successfully register (and keep) a new account.

Change browser, block html canvas, change IP address, etc. Also time plays a factor. Leave it a couple of weeks.

Or, recognise that Reddit has become completely overrun with shitposting bots and has little in the way of interesting content to offer these days, and move on.

Fingerprinting?

MataVatnik , (edited )
@MataVatnik@lemmy.world avatar

Everytime you connect to a web page and make an HTML/CSS request your browser sends information about your computer as a way to optimize the webpage (screen size, resolution, operating system, JavaScript settings, IP, internet connection, and many more attributes). This information put together essentially forms a fingerprint that is unique to you. It can be saved and used to track you across multiple web pages without having to use cookies or other more invasive tracking methods. It’s like a digital form of facial recognition.

Here is a webpage that helps you determine how unique is your fingerprint (and therefore how identifiable):

amiunique.org

RayJW ,

Just know that sites like this are useless if you don’t understand the results. There are anti-fingerprinting techniques that add random noise to your fingerprint. This might result in these kind of tests claiming you have a completely unique fingerprint, even though the anti-fingerprinting mechanisms randomise the fingerprint for every site, browser session, etc. (depending on the config). This would mean that you are relatively „safe“ from fingerprinting because you never have the same print twice but tests think you are very vulnerable because it’s still a random “unique“ fingerprint.

If this is true, they’re doing a terrible job at it. For my sins, I help moderate a small sub for the city I live in. I’m 99% sure there are one or two right wing assholes with multiple accounts but I can’t prove it.

Madrigal ,

Oh yeah, it’s easy enough to beat one you know how.

AndrewZabar ,

I’ve already been on Lemmy and learning its ins and outs since the reddit API debacle. Lemmy is not yet populated enough with good groups that cover all the topics I want, but everyone who wants to regain what Reddit used to be should join Lemmy because Reddit has burned themselves for good. It’s never gonna be anything but shit again.

P.S. all of us should encourage others to do the same.

Barx , to asklemmy in Would you wear a body cam at work?

The company you work for is not your friend. If it is their body can they will use it to their benefit. Any benefit you receive will be incidental or simply part if their propaganda to get you to wear it for them.

It will be used, primarily, to surveil employees. They will track your habits and ensure you are aware that every single thing you do for your shift is something your boss or their boss or their boss can come back to you with and reprimand you for. They will try to set performance targets that can be compared to your videos so they can tell you what an algorithm or a petty middle manager says you are doing wrong. Too much time helping a customer. You’re not folding clothes fast enough. Walk faster. No sitting. They will set keywords. Union. Break. Curse words. Your bosses’ names. They might not even review these things. The intimidation is enough. Maybe you’ll get new policies. See that black guy? Follow him. Get video. The algorithm said to do it so it can’t be racist. We’ll pass it along to the cops.

Companies wouldn’t pay for it if they didn’t see a business angle and the obvious ones are control over employees and being able to use more video for “liability” defense.

Meltrax , to asklemmy in if you are a nurse or know nurses, do you / they feel sore after each shift?

My girlfriend is a nurse. 7-7 shifts, days and nights, it alternates.

She’s gotten used to it, isn’t sore from the work anymore. Make sure you have good shoes. Do some research, ask your coworkers - having the right shoes makes a big difference when you’re on your feet for 13-14 hours straight. Add some electrolytes to your water bottle. Doesn’t need to be high in sugar unless you also aren’t eating much too. Moving and standing and being active all day takes energy and hydration. Having some simple electrolytes and enough calories will also make a huge difference in how you feel at the end of the day. You’re basically on a 12 hour hike every shift.

@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

He's a fantastic video game streamer. Very charismatic, genuine, and funny. I think one of the things that makes him special is he'll do ridiculous things for a joke. If he thinks of a funny idea on the fly, sometimes he'll basically stop playing whatever game he was supposed to be streaming, and just do something else stupid instead.

For example, one time he performed a "magic trick" by unplugging his modem and then plugging it back in, using the time in between when the stream was frozen to run out of the room, making it look like he "disappeared". He would do insane, hilarious stuff like that regularly, it wasn't like he had special streams where he did things like that, he did them all the time.

Of course he ALSO did special streams where he went even further, such as the "doll house" stream where he had a whole set made up like a fake house and basically became a Sims character with needs bars and everything. He's a really special guy, and you could spend all day listing all of his amazing feats. He perfectly walks the line between being actually stupid in a funny way, and playing it up as a character, it's convincing enough that it all just becomes "Jerma", but he is also a genuinely good guy.

Thats relatively tame, he's done more ridiculous stuff than that, but it is creative and funny in an "industry" where most streamers just play a game straightforwardly and don't "cut loose" in quite the same way. I'm just habitually hyperbolic.

I also don't want to spoil the best things he's done, half the fun of watching Jerma is discovering those things.

eldavi , to linux in linux as business/ company pc?

if it’s a large enough company, expect them to have systems administrators (sometimes called systems engineers nowadays) to exert control over their windows systems using either active directory or azure iam policies.

there are multiple ways to get a linux system to comply with those policies; but that doesn’t matter since they’ll make the case to management that the extra operational costs of either getting your system to become compliant or providing you with support will hurt the budget and/or suck up extra bandwidth for support.

your best bet in such cases are to offer written agreements that you will never seek out IT’s help and you will take full responsibility if you’re not able to get your work done because your linux system and provide a plan written down for each eventuality you can think of when your linux system doesn’t work as expected.

i would also expect your manager to reject your request despite these efforts unless you’re a highly enough paid individual contributor or have a special enough relationship with upper management.

bionicjoey ,

Honestly the only hope will be if there is a Linux nerd in the IT shop who is willing to make the case for OP from the sysadmin side of the fence. If you don’t have someone batting for you in that corner, there’s basically no hope.

Source: I’ve been using Linux at work in a Windows centric org for 5 years. Only reason is because a blessed nerd in my local IT support shop was on my side when I started there.

balder1993 ,

Another option is to have enough people in the company interested in using that to justify it.

In my company (a large bank) Linux is now being rolled out to selected people as test because there was enough interest from a lot of the backend crowd.
