    Walking is actually one major use case for the future. Imagine walking somewhere and having turn by turn directions provided for you. The issue with this person is that they stopped in the middle of the road to adjust something on their screen. Also, I don’t think walking directions is even a feature yet.

    My employer sells “stocks” to employees that don’t show anywhere and you can only sell them back to the company after two year. Exchange also isn’t immediate. Company chooses the date.

    They really want people to buy those things and are heavily campaigning for it.

    They also give a small amount of these stocks as bonuses to people that have performed well.

    When I say to people that buying those “stocks” just gives the company free loan, they look at me weird.

    wolfpack86 ,

    Do these socks appreciate or pay a dividend?

    neptune ,

    Yes, stock is basically a loan to the company. Sure, if a company always new it was going to grow at a certain rate and life were guaranteed they could give everyone an exact raise…

    Instead they say “here is a bonus, its built on a gamble. Here’s is monopoly money that might be worth 10% more in two years, or maybe the company will be bankrupt and you will be unemployed.”

    Would it be better to get a cash bonus or a raise of similar value? Sure.

    Wistful , to mildlyinteresting in At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book—one page at a time, by hand.
    @Wistful@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    Wow that seems painfully slow/tedious. Why isn’t it automatized? I think I saw a robot do like 20 pages a second on a yt some years ago.

    prenatal_confusion ,

    That would be interesting to see!

    This is probably the method that gives you the best quality (deskewing, lighting) without cutting the back of the book and feeding it into a scanner. (AFAIK)

    I saw a book scanner similar to this one that used a vacuum to turn pages but otherwise same principle.

    Dave ,
    @Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

    Google have digitised a lot of books using some more advanced tech, though they started out with something a little like this.

    cashews_best_nut ,

    What happened to that in the end? I heard they wanted to digitize the worlds books and then it just petered out at some point and heard nothing about it. Did they continue or was it spun to Internet Archive to do?

    Dave ,
    @Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

    My understanding is the project led into Google Books. Google fought many legal cases and ultimately won but their enthusiasm to scan more books seems to have waned. Google basically convinced judges that by only letting people see a few pages, it fell under fair use, but then that meant you didn’t get a giant library because you couldn’t read the whole book.

    There’s an article about it here: edsurge.com/…/2017-08-10-what-happened-to-google-…

    Also see www.hathitrust.org/about/ which is mentioned in the article.

    aeronmelon ,

    Do you remember the results of those speed scans? Crooked pages, parts of the document cut off, blurry scans, etc.

    It was a lazy method that resulted in a lot of junk data.

    Time to get back in the boat.

    Katana314 ,

    I can pay a subscription for Netflix-style block access, or I can buy individual games I want. I don’t really understand this comment.

    echo64 ,

    It’s 2024 and you can’t buy any individual movie or TV show you want, you have to buy access to literal Netflix or others as a subscription. Op is saying games are heading towards that.

    smeg ,

    You can buy individual films and TV programmes though, it’s just that most people want them now rather than in a day or two when the DVD arrives in the post

    echo64 ,

    you can buy some individual films and tv programs, you can not buy many, if not the majority of modern film/tv shows.

    Katana314 ,

    I just looked up one of Netflix’s star movies, Nimona, and yes, I can still buy blu-rays of it.

    All mediums have had exceptions where the license holder is a fickle, or ineffective, ass at selling; rare books, games with soundtrack licensing complications, unloved movies. They’re generally exceptions by individual work, not from having signed on to the Great Netflix Prison.

    Generally, where there’s demand, they still let you become its permanent owner. (In the topic of anime, they even overcharge for it because it’s such an uncommon choice made by super-fans as a prestige item)

    echo64 ,

    where there’s demand, they still let you become its permanent owner. (

    this is not true. in-fact it is seen as a marketing tool for the subscription services. market-forces do not naturally lead to the outcome you are describing.

    it is also not the “exception” that something isn’t available, it’s an exception when a subscription service does release a purchasable option.

    Indeed it’s getting more and more common that not only will shows/movies be unavailable for purchase, but deleted from the subscriptions too.

    flames5123 ,

    For single player games, or multiplayer games where there’s not a bigger progression system, yes, I 100% agree.

    But sometimes this is necessary, like with an MMO. You’re paying for access to unlimited server time for that period (typically month or year).

    In all honesty, this is a technique that works. It won’t inflate the tire properly, it’s intended for situations like getting tires fitted to tractor rims, and it doesn’t use gasoline or oil. The main problems were the fact that they used oil, and a whole quart of it at that

    Underscores require you to use the Shift key.
