It happened a while ago too. Like windows 8 I think. Old task manager popped up no matter how laggy your computer was. It has some sort of highest priority and didn’t depend on much. Making it reliable. Since 8, this changed. Any changes since have been add-ons and reskins. I like how it shows things like gpu now but at what cost.
Cool!, but the fedi software is not just that (especially #twitterverse ones). There are:
Gotosocial -> a small server first fediverse-server apps. You can spun it with just $4 vps and get a dedicates instance with features comparable to Mastodon.
Snac2 -> a smaller fediverse server apps, it even use less resources than Gotosocial, but the UI is so oldschool.
Microblog.pub -> a python-based single user focused server apps for tinkerers. It fully compatible with Fediverse/Mastodon with nice ui.
I tried all of them and still use both Gotosocial and and Snac2 instances daily, and they are a nice piece of software for their own use-case. Granted, all of these list above is not straightforward to use, but can you add that on advanced category. It feels unfair if it just the usual trio (Mastodon, Misskey/Calkey, Pleroma/Akkoma) that has exposure in the forum. thx.
Indeed. This is, at best, scratching the surface. My aim was to create a list that ticked most of these boxes:
Alternatives to existing services - this is a question that comes up often so I thought there might as well be a list of the popular ones.
Relatively well developed and simple to use.
Has a user-friendly website that makes it easy for ordinary users to jump onboard (why Hubzilla didn’t make the list)
Granted, all of these list above is not straightforward to use, but can you add that on advanced category.
That’s where posts like yours come in useful - my list is just the easy on-ramp and then people can add in great resources like that which help people push on and do more. It’s kind of where I’ll be going next in my journey, so I am grateful for the post. If you, or anyone else, have more advanced services them keep them coming.
Such as, where is that spring line? Where is the rest of the tracking? Who installed that motor, and why? It looks like it was installed in the last handful of years. It’s also installed in a helluva way, but, given the headroom, I can excuse it, but, without tracking or a spring line, that motor isn’t doing shit… so why is it there? Wtf is going on here?! This is causing a crisis.
So, it turns out, (as someone pointed out) it’s a one piece garage door, I don’t see these where I live due to snow. So, it likely actually works, crisis kinda averted.
There’s a huge number of these kinds of homes in the southwest. They’re pretty inexpensive and they usually sit on the market for months. They’re in no way investment properties - mine sold a decade later for what I paid for it after sitting on the market for a year.
You have to go into it with eyes open, though. If you’re lucky, you will have your own well on the property. If not, you’ll have a shared well or have to haul your own water. That changes the way you think about showers and laundry. You’re in the middle of nowhere, and your neighbors may range from the nice folks who live a mile over that way to the black helicopter conspiracy theorists. You’ll probably see them rarely but hear them doing target practice in their backyard. Wildlife will very much be a thing. Winters can be rough because if you get snowed in, you’re not going anywhere without owning a plow or snow vehicle. Summers are freaking hot. Water will increasingly be an issue. Internet will be unavailable unless you have a satellite service. You’re going to potentially have a problem with cell service, too.
Some of the problems can be solved by throwing money at it, others are just things you have to adapt to.
My cousin did something like that, he had to move so he bought a lot, built a garage with a second floor, he had his kitchen/livingroom on the ground level. That gave him a place to live in right next to the house he was building. Once the house was finished he moved his stuff and now has a sweet heated garage with loads of storage space on the second floor.
In his case he had to build a temporary wall inside to enclose the garage door because of winters.
