fubo , to asklemmy in How would you expain the idea of social status to a child?

Some people have more friends than others.

Part of that is how friendly they are. Part is how pretty they are. Part is how smart they are and how able they are to help others. But part is how much they can afford to throw fancy parties, go to expensive schools, or get good health treatments.

The more friends you have, and the more friends your friends have, the more you can get done in society. If you want to start a business, get elected, or other things that require a lot of other people’s support, having lots of friends helps.

Sure it’s not fair. What you can do is figure out how to be a good friend to those around you and work well with others. This includes things called “allyship” and “solidarity” as well as just being nice to people and having useful skills.

Good explanation, just watch out so the kid does not start being wired with it’s friends. Maybe explain different kinds of friends.

This is exactly what i was thinking…

This is a perfect explanation for a sub-18 yo…

To a child, not so much…

But again, this is 2023, children these days are waaaaay smarter than us back in the 90’s

fubo ,

Well, you could just have the kids watch My Little Pony to learn about the power of friendship.

centof OP ,

That is much simpler and kid friendlier way than I could come up with. Kudos! A minor nitpick is that use the word friend implies that they are a peer, which in the case of role based status like a teacher doesn’t really fit.

I guess what I am looking for is a way to explain the double standard where its thought of as okay teacher or parent to yell but it is frowned upon if a kid does it.

fubo ,

Oh, well that’s not social status as such. It’s also “okay” in mainstream society for a police officer to yell at a corporate VP situationally, even though the VP has more buddies and more money and a better health plan and a hotter partner than the police officer does.

Their temples similarly featured a blazing fire in the middle which was to be kept burning indefinitely. You can see some of these on Sassanid pre-islamic coinage although the quality of the strikes leaves something to be desired.

Jinn (Arabic: جن‎, jinn) – also romanized as djinn or anglicized as genies – are invisible creatures in early religion in pre-Islamic Arabia and later in Islamic culture and beliefs. Like humans, they are accountable for their deeds, can be either believers (muslims) or unbelievers (kafir); depending on whether they accept God’s guidance.

Ah memories! I wrote the project for my GCSE computer studies on this. I also wrote my friends project for 20 quid since our teacher was rubbish and hadn’t actually taught anyone to program. Most of the other kids figured it out, but my friend was clueless and didn’t want to completely fail the subject.

Num10ck , to til in TIL yawning is observed in almost all vertebrate animals and is "contagious" across species. There is no consensus on why yawning occurs.

i thought it was to clear out carbon dioxide build up deep in your lungs, and instinctually its an indicator of rest?

NovaPrime ,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

As someone with asthma and lowered ability to cycle out CO2, yawning has always helped me restore the “full” feeling and your comment just made everything snap into place.

The primary driver of suffocation panic, pain, and feeling of air starvation isn’t the lack of oxygen but CO2 buildup. It makes sense that yawning on command could then help alleviate the symptoms of CO2 buildup in asthma sufferers.

Nomad ,

Might be a group protection mechanism to indicate low oxigen in crammed spaces qith many individuals. In addition to that could be a geoup trigger for rest.

Digestive_Biscuit ,
@Digestive_Biscuit@feddit.uk avatar

I always thought it was due to clearing the lungs out or to regulate them but then I saw a turtle yawn under water. I then thought it’s ancestors wouldn’t have been swimmers so maybe it’s instinctive still, but then it would need a mechanism to prevent water inhalation. So why retain the yawn.

Perhaps as you say it’s more about visual communication to others around you.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It seems most sensible to me that it serves a bunch of uses: clearing the lungs, alerting yourself and others that you’re tired and probably need someone else to take over, social bonding, spooking predators…

I was watching the Monty Python documentary and they mentioned this. I think one of the Terry’s bought the episodes, which were scheduled to be erased. Otherwise, no Monty Python for America. What was remarkable was many shows that the Pythons had written for, and the ones that had influenced them, At Last the 1948 Show or the Goon Show were gone.
