One can’t say they live in a civilized country if it still has the death penalty.

BURN , to news in Spotify raises premium subscription price for millions

Might be the push for me to go to YT music, which I already pay for with YT premium, but I’ve never wanted to use it. But now that Spotify is giving me a reason I might just switch.

coolcrowe ,
@coolcrowe@lemmy.world avatar

Funny you mention that. I just got an email last week that my youtube music price was going up to $16.99/month. I’ve used it since the days of google play, before it joined with youtube and it was like $9.99 (mostly out of a dislike for spotify). But it isn’t the best service tbh, what with low-quality audio and a buggy app interface. So I was finally motivated to make the switch to Tidal this week. Loving it so far… hope they don’t follow suit and up their sub price like the others (knock on wood).

FWIW, the email I got from youtube said something about being able to sign up for a cheaper rate if I nuked my account and made a new one on youtube through a web browser. Not sure why that would make a difference, but I was too over it to even bother.

Pika ,

I am actually debating canceling my yt premium sub over it and im going to twitch turbo, I have been progressively using yt less and less anyway and to be honest, the new price point (which was 13.99 for me) is not worth the benefits it provides. mobile queuing can be used via playlist or watch later, adverts are annoying but avoidable with new found apps approaching. Downloading for offline use is a joke, it barely has ever worked for me. Picture in Picture mode is buggy and for the most part I don’t use it. This combined with the absolute crap recommendation system they have had the last few years(like seriously its all either stuff in my watch history or stuff that is unrelated to anything I watch). I’m sure they are just following every other company but, it might just push me off lol

Also to clarify your nuking account thing. I expect you signed up via either apple subscriptions or google play subs, both of which take a chunk out of the money given. So that might be what is going on with the price diff.

wahming ,

Except... google play sub's cut would presumably go to... google

Pika ,

yea, but internal to internal charges are sadly not uncommon. so they would still do a charge.

andallthat , to worldnews in Arresting Vladimir Putin in South Africa would be 'declaration of war', says Ramaphosa

is it just me or is this a diplomatic way to tell Putin to just stay in Russia without telling him “you’re not invited any longer”? To me it sounds like “uuh… man… if you REALLY want to come you definitely won’t be arrested here. Not by me, I mean. Oh, I got pressures, POWERFUL pressures and you ending up arrested or worse isn’t off the table but hey… do come and visit anyway if you want. We’re cool right?”

They pretty much begged him not to come before as they are obligated to arrest him themselves due to ICC arrest warrant.

zephyrvs ,

Makes sense, though. Why escalate things unnecessarily if he can just attend remotely and have Lavrov take care of the backroom relationships?

WolfhoundRO , to worldnews in Arresting Vladimir Putin in South Africa would be 'declaration of war', says Ramaphosa

Declaration of war on Russia? And who would intervene across so many kilometers? The Russian Fleet? Wagner?

zephyrvs ,

As far as I know, the Kremlin stated that they never threatened South Africa with war in any way and they simply announced that Putin would participate remotely, so the question is moot.

It’s South Africa. Putin will be safe as long as Russia keeps building in the country.

Likely, but there is an international arrest warrant for him, so South Africa should arrest him themselves. But it’s well known that rules doesn’t apply to nuclear powers, so Putin will be free…
