autotldr Bot , to world in World shift to clean energy is unstoppable, IEA report says

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The world is on an “unstoppable” shift towards renewable energy but the phase down of fossil fuels is not happening quickly enough, a new report says.

It praised the significant progress countries had made in expanding renewable energy and supporting consumers with the shift to electric vehicles and heat pumps instead of gas boilers.

It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s just a matter of ‘how soon’ - and the sooner the better for all of us," said International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol.

The report recognised that oil and gas would continue to play a role in the world’s economy and that maintaining investment was “essential”.

That compares with the pledge made in 2015 when political leaders agreed on limiting temperature rises to “well below” 2C and to make every effort to keep it under 1.5C, to avoid the most dangerous impacts of climate change.

But the IEA warned that it meant further uncertainty compounding an already unsettled global economy - Middle Eastern countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia - account for 67% of world oil reserves.

hoshikarakitaridia , to technology in X begins charging new users $1 a year in New Zealand, Philippines

I mean that’s obviously a turn off for a lot of ppl but I don’t think the inherent idea is stupid if they wanna get rid of all of the bots

Therefore ,

That’s a hard working if. A dollar per year from a majority of Twitter users is a few dollars. I think it’s probably about the money.

gloog ,

Scam bot operators will just use stolen credit cards - or even easier, iTunes gift cards that they get from the victims of their scams - to pay to "prove" that they aren't bot accounts. For the fake followers/interaction bot "services" it increases the cost of operating, but I doubt they spin up a bunch of new accounts for every client - that $1 per account can probably be spread out pretty thin. I don't see this solving the bot problem any more than prioritizing paid account replies did (it didn't work at all for that).

hoshikarakitaridia ,

“scam bot operators will just use stolen credits cards -”

And that’s not true. Yes, there will be a small portion that do it, but this is where this idea is pretty smart.

Taking your credit card information is a functional hurdle, but also a legal risk.

There’s a bunch of companies and people who will stop using bots just because they can’t implement it, don’t want to implement it, or don’t have the time. Also, don’t forget if there’s one person who provides 10.000 active bots, that means providing credit card information 10.000x times, but also 120.000$ per year. If you wanna do it legally, this shit is expensive, and probably not worth it for a lot of ppl.

And there’s also a bunch of ppl who are weighting the risk of being exposed for fake credit cards, and they stop using bots because they are not willing to commit fraud.

I get that this will turn off even more users and it’s obviously a bad pr move, but you can’t understate that it is quite effective for the things he says he wants to achieve.

autotldr Bot , to technology in Microsoft completes $69bn takeover of Call of Duty-maker Activision Blizzard

This is the best summary I could come up with:

After the competition watchdog blocked the takeover earlier this year, Microsoft’s president Brad Smith hit out at the CMA’s decision, which it said was “bad for Britain” and contradicted “the ambitions of the UK to become an attractive country to build technology businesses”.

But the CMA’s Ms Cardell said with the sale of Activision’s cloud streaming rights to Ubisoft, which makes Assassin’s Creed, “we’ve made sure Microsoft can’t have a stranglehold over this important and rapidly developing market”.

Under the restructured agreement, Microsoft has agreed to transfer the rights to stream Activision games from the cloud to Ubisoft for 15 years outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

The deal with Activision also means Microsoft will own its studio solely purposed for mobile games, with hopes of expanding on the successes of titles such as Candy Crush.

The takeover further cements Microsoft as a video game giant and could catapult it ahead of Nintendo to become the third-biggest player in the industry behind Sony, the owner of the PlayStation console, and market leader Tencent.

“[It will lead to] more choice, more innovation, better value and improved gaming experiences and a healthy, competitive market,” said Ms Stewart, who is also a former head of ICT at the Cabinet Office government department.

ozmot ,

So let me make sure I’m reading this right. They let the deal go through because Microsoft gave Ubisoft the cloud streaming right to activation for the next 15 years. The argument being this deal will stop Microsoft from becoming a monopoly in the gaming market due to cloud gamings speculative importance in markets future.

Call me crazy but cloud gamings gonna take at least 15 years to be an important part of the market if it ever gets there in the first place. I can’t tell if regulators are stupid or wholly corrupt.

They are saying they do not use language that makes judgement, because that is not what they do. They are a neutral reporter of what is happening in the world (ie the news).

Everyone laments that “news” has been overrun by opinion journalism that tries to influence left or right. This is what “just news” looks like.

atetulo ,

So basically, you can’t read above a 2nd grade level.

BBC is saying they report the facts and let people make their own judgements. I know this might be hard for your biased mind to understand, but the word ‘terrorist’ has been thrown around so much it’s practically meaningless. Heck, even when it should be applied (American terrorists shooting substations), it isn’t. It’s a political term at this point, nothing more.

You’re trying to advocate for news outlets to tell us how to think instead of showing us information, which is shitty journalism for idiots.

Mchugho ,

Show the information that this was a terrorist attack, because it was. That’s an indisputable fact. Indiscriminately killing, maiming, torturing and raping civilians to spread terror. That is terrorism.

atetulo ,

I can tell you completely ignored my 2nd paragraph.

Either that, or you’re not capable of comprehending it.

Either way, have a nice day.

No, they will report on the attrocities committed. Is it important for you for the BBC to tell you whether the attrocities are evil or not?

specimen ,

I still can’t understand why naming Hamas a terrorist group goes against their “present only the facts” view. It’s the same group that raped and killed civilians just six days ago. They posted videos of their horrid raid on the internet and plan to stream hostage executions. These are facts, it is not subjective. Isn’t this the plain definition of terrorism? Why is BBC reluctant to brand a group that performs acts of terror as terrorists? This goes for how they treated IRA stories as well. I really can’t see how this adheres to good journalism principles, unlike many people here seem to be praising. It just seems to me a weird hill to die on.

autotldr Bot , to world in Egypt warned Israel days before Hamas struck, US committee chairman says

This is the best summary I could come up with:

“We know that Egypt has warned the Israelis three days prior that an event like this could happen,” Mr McCaul told reporters following a closed-door intelligence briefing on Wednesday for lawmakers about the Middle East crisis, according to AFP news agency.

An Egyptian intelligence official told the Associated Press news agency this week that Cairo had repeatedly warned the Israelis “something big” was being planned from Gaza.

On Wednesday, Mr Netanyahu described any suggestion that Israel had received a specific warning in advance of the deadly incursion as “totally fake news”.

Israel has been pounding Hamas targets in Gaza in response, while residents of the territory say they have no mains electricity after their only power station ran out of fuel.

Hamas has, meanwhile, condemned US President Joe Biden’s remarks on Tuesday saying Israel had a duty to respond to the attacks, which he called an “act of sheer evil”.

In the wake of the Hamas attack, the US announced it was moving an aircraft carrier, ships and jets to the eastern Mediterranean, and that it would also give Israel additional equipment and ammunition.

Hard for me to believe they would want to shoot themselves in the foot like that. Very short sighted.

DarkThoughts ,

Can't blame Germany here. One of the victims was a German woman, which was later seen on the back of a truck, all of her limbs broken / deformed, just in underwear and with a deep wound in the head, paraded around and spat at from even civilians.

To be clear: I am NOT "blaming" Germany. It seems like a rational response to me.

DarkThoughts ,

I know, I wasn't disagreeing with you.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever ,

hamas don’t care about public opinion. The PLO cared. The PLO was largely destroyed from within with much of the power and funding shifting to hamas (allegedly with israeli government support).

Iran allegedly gave them funding and helped them smuggle even more weapons in. They used these to engage in acts of terror. This will lead to more power and support from third parties. And the retaliatory strikes from israel will lead to more recruits from within whatever remains of Palestine when this is over.

But the goal is not to achieve freedom. Because hamas knows it can’t rule. At best we would have a debacle like in Afghanistan or any of the islamic state ruled regions/countries. They are just violent warlords who want all the power and “prestige”, the right to rape and murder anyone they want, and that is it.

And, much like with israel’s atrocities, it is really easy for people to ignore the evil shit hamas does because “they are an oppressed people fighting for survival”. That goes out the window when the oppression does.

The PLO, for all its flaws, wanted to become a government. And while they still exist, they are even less influential than the youtubers telling people what to feel about the past 24 hours or so.

Some men just want to see the world burn.

I get what you're saying and can accept that Hamas is this way. I am not up to date on them.

But I do think it is important to point out just how foolish and short sighted it is to be that way. It feels to me like saying the sky is blue but I think it should be said.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever ,

You’re still approaching this from a completely different, and rather privileged, position. You are expecting to live a long life and want things to be better and so forth

These are violent terrorists who know that, even if everything goes their way, they’ll likely die young. So it is about short term benefits and doing what they want now.

BraveSirZaphod ,
@BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Their explicit aim is the complete destruction of Israel. It is incredibly easy to believe. To quote the Hamas charter:

Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.

[Peace] initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement... Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the infidels as arbitrators in the lands of Islam... There is no solution for the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.

The Day of Judgment will not come about until Muslims fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him."

Hamas is explicitly opposed to peace, and it's sole aim is to murder or expel every Jew from the land. Any supporting these attacks needs to asked if this the aim they really want to support.

theluckyone ,

Hard to justify supporting either side, what with Israel’s actions over the years. There is no good side, and the losers will be the average citizens on both sides.

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Ukraine war: Burger King still open in Russia despite pledge to exit

This is the best summary I could come up with:

David Shear, RBI’s president, said in March 2022 that Burger King’s main operator in Russia had “refused” to shut the outlets following the first attacks on Ukraine.

Steven Tian, part of a team of researchers at Yale University who track what companies have done in response to the Ukraine war, argued using franchise agreements as an “excuse” was a “convenient smokescreen”.

Mark Dixon, founder of the Moral Rating Agency, which campaigns against firms doing business in Russia, called for RBI to disclose what specific actions it had taken in its attempts to leave.

David Bond, partner at law firm Fieldfisher, said RBI’s 15% stake meant it could not simply “dictate terms” to its fellow shareholders to require them to close Burger King branches.

He also suggested companies that franchise out their brands would be reluctant to simply walk away from deals as it could lead to “dire consequences”, including being sued for breach of contract, as well as reputational damage.

But he said consequences aside, there was nothing stopping RBI from terminating the franchise arrangement if it was adamant it wanted to do so, though added it might not result in the Burger King brand ceasing to exist in Russia.
