autotldr Bot , to world in The Irish Light: Woman abused by paper which falsely said vaccine killed her son

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A grieving mother and her lawyer have been targeted by an extreme campaign of abuse after suing a conspiracy theory newspaper which falsely claimed her son died from a Covid vaccine.

The campaign of abuse following her legal case has been “nothing short of shocking” and may explain why other relatives have not taken action, Ms Campbell’s solicitor, Ciaran Mulholland, told BBC Radio 4’s Marianna in Conspiracyland podcast.

In frequent social media posts over several weeks, the Irish Light and its editor, Gemma O’Doherty, have accused Ms Campbell of “outrageous lies”, being “mentally unstable” and involved in a “massive fraud”.

He told the BBC the legal proceedings were launched after various attempts to ask Gemma O’Doherty to remove the images of Diego Gilsenan failed and resulted in an escalation in online abuse.

In July, the High Court in Dublin granted a restraining order that prohibits the Irish Light editor from contacting Ms Campbell and from using or publishing the image of her son for any purpose without his mother’s consent.

Manchester Arena bomb survivors are suing over claims the attack was faked and parents of Sandy Hook mass shooting victims won a landmark ruling against Infowars host Alex Jones.

I really wonder at what point can people like O’Doherty be declared clinically insane? They clearly struggle with the concept of reality, and they actively testify to that in writing.

These papers and the people who write them truly are insane. I had the English version of the paper through my door the other week and you would think it’s satire It’s so ridiculous.

These far-right loony circle-jerks would be fascinating if they weren’t so troubling.

damn i wish all these conspiracy theorists were half as persecuted as they think they are

Chainweasel ,

Or at least turn their attention to the real conspiracies. They’re positive that there’s 5G tracking chips in the COVID Vaccines, but it’s lunacy to think that Trump stole classified documents and tried to overthrow the US Government.

leftist conspiracy theories: the tonkin gulf incident was a setup, declassified documnets show so

right wing conspiracy theories: the gay satanist democrats are extracting fictional drug from abducted kids, in basement of this pizzeria, which has no basement. i know this from the most reliable source of all: mystic readings of 4chan

that’s a part of the problem

reality is boring. it’s the boring shit that gets things done; while there are some exceptional people you should never meet your heroes. wouldn’t it be cool if instead you knew something that no one else does?

that “secret knowledge” is a part that allows conspiracy theory believers feel superior to non-believers. this is easier if believer is otherwise unremarkable or even miserable, stuck in some hole with no future, is a loner, can’t move and so on. it also helps if they are gullible and or can’t verify information they receive. if you have an hour to waste, watch this www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44

I know, I was pointing out that it sounds like a total fantasy. I actually don’t believe people actually believe all that stuff, but it’s up there in yankeeland so what do I know.

I understand why conspirancy theories are popular, it is fun to me to think about them. But I don’t believe and the few interactions I had with conspiracy theorists online make me think they are all hard trolling or insane.

if they allotted their limited time and attention carefully, they wouldn’t believe in conspiracy theories. i do think that true believers need professional help, 9/10 of cases

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Tou Thao: Ex-officer in George Floyd case gets 57 months for role in killing

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A former Minneapolis police officer has been sentenced to 57 months (almost five years) in prison for his role in the death of George Floyd.

The officer, Tou Thao, was found guilty of aiding and abetting manslaughter by a Minnesota judge in May.

Ex-officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Thao, who was sentenced to three and a half years over his civil rights conviction, will serve the 57 months at the same time.

The former officer had waived his right to a jury trial in the manslaughter case, opting instead for Judge Peter Cahill to determine the verdict.

Judge Cahill added that Thao’s actions “were even more unreasonable in light of the fact that he was under a duty to intervene to stop other officers’ excessive use of force and was trained to render medical aid”.

Good, but it kinda ticks me off the he gets to serve this sentence at the same time he’s seeing a 3-year for the civil rights conviction… like rather than 8 years, it maxes out at 5, and that’s some bullshit.

All four former police officers involved in the incident were convicted on federal civil rights charges, in addition to state murder charges for Mr Chauvin. Ex-officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Thao, who was sentenced to three and a half years over his civil rights conviction, will serve the 57 months at the same time.

Bigmodirty , to worldnews in Tou Thao: Ex-officer in George Floyd case gets 57 months for role in killing

Not enough. Let’s remember Floyd got a death sentence with no trial or jury but simply because these cops thought of themselves as judge, jury and executioner.

    feedum_sneedson ,

What did this guy do? Just not stop the other guy? I’m not American.

    Hexadecimalkink ,

He prevented citizens from coming to George Floyds aid. He essentially protected the cops killing Floyd from people trying to save him.

    joejoefashosho ,

And one of the onlookers that was trying to intervene was a first responder. She testified in her fire department uniform.

    someguy3 ,

4 officers on scene. Iirc 2 normal officers, 2 rookies like first week. He was a normal officer and went on crowd control while the other officer knelt on the guy’s neck. The 2 rookies looked on.

    mosiacmango , (edited )

The fully trained, but still new to the force rookies held Floyd down while Chavin executed him. They were not passive bystanders. One of the rookies said they should move him, but did not. That rookie was given some leniency for trying to do the right thing, but still convicted because he didn’t actually do it.

This asshole stopped a crowd that was begging to help save floyds life, including a paramedic/firefighter that told them Floyd was dying. He then told jokes as floyd choked to death, begging for his mother.

It’s all on video, all 9+ minutes. You can watch the whole murder in real time. Go do it if you doubt any of the above.

All 4 officers could have made different and better choices that day, but instead all 4 opted to either murder a man or let a man be murdered. They all got what they deserved.

    jackpot ,
    @jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

in fairness, i have sympathy for the rookies. two much more experienced senior officers lead the way and i can easily imagined they doubted themselves in their presense. they just looked on. they should get punished sure but i get it. the other two however, long fucking stay in jail please.

    Alwaysfallingupyup ,

he didnt die from being choked He died from Fentanyl. The cop that did the knee DEFINITELY she be locked up ! The other two kicked off the force maybe. But not jail time

Weird that he died from fentanyl at the exact same time was he was being choked to death

    Warfarin ,

Well no because an overdose of fentanyl induces that

Guess you never saw the trial or the video of how Saint Fentanyl acted prior to being restrained

    Phantom3805 ,

Medical examiner testified saying fentanyl was a contributing factor but not the direct cause of death. George Floyd was murdered and people like you are essentially saying he deserved to die because of his behavior. Cops are not the judge, jury, and executioner, and if they were capable of holding him down and killing him then they were capable of handcuffing and arresting him, but chose not to.

LeadSoldier , to worldnews in Tou Thao: Ex-officer in George Floyd case gets 57 months for role in killing

He is doing 57 months because he is serving for multiple crimes simultaneously.

Police who violate the law should not be allowed anything but the maximum sentence non-concurrent with other crimes.

But cops protect those who have power and those who have power. Don’t want to piss off the cops so here we are.

    acosmichippo ,
    @acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t even understand why concurrent sentences exist. if you do multiple crimes you should serve time for them all, regardless of who you are.

    zaph ,
    @zaph@lemmy.world avatar

It makes some sense when multiple crimes were committed but it was one event. Robbing a liquor store becomes several different crimes with their own max sentences. Sure there were multiple laws broken but they only did one thing. The issue is how grey that line becomes and how much authority a judge has over a crime’s punishment and when you factor in things like if the robber shot the clerk.

    ryathal ,

Because prison is supposed to be about rehabilitation and not punishment. If you ban concurrent sentences, you might as well just shoot anyone with 50+ years of consecutive time in the head, it’s a whole lot more humane.

    conquer4 ,

No, apparently it’s more humane to abolish the death penalty and let them rot,

    cwagner ,

I personally disagree, but most people seem to agree. But I also have never been in a situation where I’d seriously have to choose, so obviously my opinion ins somewhat academic.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The deal with investor KKR marks the likely end of a years-long saga for owner Paramount Global, which had been looking for a buyer for the book company since 2020.

Titles released since include Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People; Joseph Heller’s military satire Catch-22 and best-selling mysteries by Stephen King.

KKR, which counts digital books platform Overdrive among its earlier investments, said it saw an opportunity to expand the company’s distribution “across mediums and markets”.

Author Stephen King was among the big names to testify against the sale on behalf of the US government, which has taken a harder line on competition under US President Joe Biden.

But on Monday, the boss of Paramount Global, Bob Bakish, said in a statement that the money raised by Simon & Schuster’s sale would give the entertainment firm greater “financial flexibility”.

It reported an overall loss after ad sales at its TV networks fell by 10% and the firm couldn’t follow up with a film that was as big as Top Gun: Maverick last year.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A hidden world of sex abuse and exploitation by men working as “spiritual healers” has been uncovered by BBC Arabic.

It is mostly women who visit healers - believing that they can solve problems and cure illness by expelling evil spirits known as “jinn”.

Testimonies gathered by the BBC from 85 women, over a period of more than a year, named 65 so-called healers in Morocco and Sudan - two countries where such practices are particularly popular - with accusations ranging from harassment to rape.

Dalal (not her real name) sought treatment for depression from a spiritual healer in a town near Casablanca a few years ago, when she was in her mid-20s.

In Sudan, a woman named Sawsan told us that when her husband left the family home to live with a second wife - as is his right under Sharia (Islamic law) - she found herself destitute, and approached a healer for help.

In Sudan, Dr Alaa Abu Zeid, head of the family and society department at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, was initially reluctant to believe that so many women had reported experiences of abuse to us.

Entirely political. Police do the same thing all over but because it was a black man on cellphone video the entire black community rioted and burned everything down for a month. Should they have been convicted? Probably. Was it deliberate? Most likely not. Dude was hopped up on fentanyl.

Oh sorry my bad. What I meant to say is he was high on drugs and had an extensive criminal history. He started the encounter by fighting the police. Don’t fight the police.

    philpo ,

Neither point is any reason to even remotely justify what happened to him. Not even one bit.

    Tb0n3 ,

Why not? If somebody fights against you as a cop you’ll be less likely to let up and allow them room to escape. Most people would be fine in that situation. It was kind of a freak accident.

    philpo ,

No it wasn’t. It was manslaughter at least.

But that’s enough fish for you, troll.

Why do you think I’m a troll. I just disagree with you. And does manslaughter get you 20 years?

    samsepi0l ,

Does a criminal history mean you deserve to die?

    Tb0n3 ,

I said nothing about being deserved or not, but sometimes actions have consequences which nobody wants but happen anyway due to circumstances nobody predicted. Sure are a whole lot of people now saying how they can’t breathe but still not a whole lot of them dying.
