I remember Spain having traditionally a very high youth unemployment rate, just checked tradingeconomics.com/…/youth-unemployment-rate and it’s 28%. Also I remember Swedish youth always struggled and there it’s similar to China with 19%.

I guess what is different is that this is new to China. Now you can’t get a job when you’re young and when you’re 35 you’re too old to work.

moistclump ,

Just in case anyone else was wondering, the unemployment rate for youth (up to 24 years old) in China is 21%.

Godric OP ,

That’s really interesting, I hope they can bring those numbers to a better place. Youth unemployment can cause lots of social unrest, especially when there is no plan/policy in place to address it.

barsoap ,

You want to look at seasonally adjusted numbers because it’s no wonder that there’s massive unemployment the month people get out of school.

Spain and Greece are fucked, yes, structural issues, Italy somehow managed to get back on track. Without seasonal adjustment, during Corona, it was as bad as 70-80% in Greece IIRC.

Three things though that help us soak that kind of thing up: a) mobility between EU countries, b) actual welfare systems, c) not having to pay alimony to your parents, at least not if you’re not filthily rich.

taladar , to worldnews in 'Massive' search on for children swept away by Pennsylvania floods

According to the National Weather service, much of the northeastern United States will remain under a flood watch until Tuesday evening.

And yet, not a single recommendation in the article on how to avoid being caught up in flash floods, what causes them, what are first signs, how to behave when caught in one,… I know it is the BBC so probably not the primary news source for that part of the US but still, that would have been the easiest way to save lives in similar situations

taladar , to worldnews in LGBT rights in Africa: Will Kenya be the latest to pass anti-gay law?

I am getting a bit sick and tired of American religious groups spreading hatred around the world. Also, how sad that they basically associated “family” in the name of any group or law with “must be by (by) a hate group” in my mind.

The most annoying thing isn’t even the religious extremists, it is all the religious moderates who go around claiming that religion isn’t the problem before turning around and supporting the extremists by giving them the power to implement their vile agendas.

My opinion about this whole situation and the war against Russia, and the relationship of Europe and the United States to us, can be described in the words of the book War of the Worlds : Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

Considering the hatred and malice that the progressive West shows towards Russia and the Russian people… nothing surprising.

Most of those grains were going to Africa which Russia pretents to be best friends with, so I’m not sure how they showed progressive West anything really.

Lmao this is such a clown show. As a infosec professional I would have been fired so long ago in the private sector for allowing stupidity to get this far with regards to critical data leakage. As another user pointed out, we have had the technology for decades to prevent this kind of thing, but apparently the geriatrics at the DOD haven’t figured it out yet. Bunch of clowns with their CEH looking at each other for instruction.

cityslicker343 , to worldnews in California crews battle wildfires in extreme heat
@cityslicker343@lemmy.world avatar

Fire attack is a 24 hour operation, day and night. Aircraft typically won’t fly at night but the fire activity usually slows at night as temps go down and relative humidity go up. A lot of back burns and firing operations happen at night when the weather holds the fire in check some more.

abraham_linksys , (edited ) to worldnews in California crews battle wildfires in extreme heat

Honest question: why not fight it at night? Would be cooler with the sun down, and the target glows in the dark to the naked eye. No light no problem? I’m sure it’s more complex than that

BrikoX OP ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

In the 1970s, the US halted aerial firefighting activities at night due to cost and safety concerns. I know some states made narrow exceptions, but not sure about California. A good read on this www.airmedandrescue.com/…/nighttime-firefighting
