At that point we might see a split between corporate and open internet.

The concern with WEI proposal is that it’s going to be server enforced. Basically, the server will require browsers to be signed and will refuse to talk to ones it doesn’t recognize the signature for. This will mean that you’ll only be able to talk to such servers using a browser that’s approved by whoever distributes these certs. This is a great explanation of the whole scheme.

We’ll see if sites really start forcing this standard, could just turn into a situation where you use Chrome as an app to access specific sites that force it and Firefox for everything else.

If experience gets bad enough then people will look for alternatives. IE was something like 90% of the market share at one point and then it lost it fairly rapidly.

Pretty much, and I think this highlights just how important it is to have at least two independently developed browser engines. If Chromium becomes the only game in town that would effectively let Google, which makes most of its revenue from ads, decide how we access the internet. That would be an absolutely terrible scenario to be in.

These aren’t 1940s geopolitics. USSR provided education, built infrastructure, provided food, and helped Africa shake off western imperialism. People who got education in Patrice Lumumba university in Russia are still alive today. Meanwhile, the west continues to oppress and colonize Africa today. That’s why Africans are aligning with Russia. The fact that you don’t understand this shows profound ignorance on your part just as does your framing of the war in Ukraine.

Unconditional US support is the basically the key reason Israel is able to do what they do. US funds the regime in Israel, provides it with weapons, and shields it at the UN. Only way the apartheid will end is once US is no longer able to prop it up.

It’s worth noting that private business isn’t even necessary to have competition. For example, USSR had different design bureaus that would compete with each other. When a new technology was developed, each would put out a proposal and the best one would be selected. The advantage of that model however was that everyone shared the learnings from a project. So overall knowledge and expertise would increase. With private competition this doesn’t happen and companies end up relearning lessons from other companies.

The reality is that the selection pressure for companies is to make profit. Providing a good service tends to be more expensive than using shady business practices, hence why we see companies use shady business practices. And once a company gets large enough to become an effective monopoly then it doesn’t even have to provide a semblance of a good service because there are no viable alternatives customers can use. Telecom industry in North America is a perfect example of that.

The leadership of a communist country caring about people not revolting is a much more direct incentive to provide better lives for people than the indirect incentive of a profit motive.

Imagine being utterly ignorant of western colonization of Africa and the role USSR played in African liberation. People in Africa support Russia today because of that history. It’s not a mystery for anybody with even a modicum of historical literacy. Meanwhile, nice ad hominem there, are you disputing the factual content of the article or just making a clown of yourself as usual?
