There's already been issues like this in using copper sulfate (which is inorganic in terms of molecular structure and persistent as an element like you mention, but labeled as organic in some jurisdictions in terms of agricultural treatments and food marketing) as a fungicide. It's a very short lived fungicide for leaf borne fungal diseases, meaning it must be present on the leaf to prevent infection (it is easily washed away by rain or errant irrigation) and applied repeatedly, but is long lived in the soil meaning it can build up and kill off mycorrhizae and other beneficial soil fungus causing longer term drops in yield.

So, yeah, your worry is valid. And, that's just one example.

In my experience, if you break them into sections or at least halves, you can pick those up and eat them. (provided a good layer of beans to hold it together as mentioned by another commenter.) When I've tried to pick the whole thing up, it almost always breaks right around where I was holding it and it sucks, even if it manages to hit the plate when it falls.

Meanwhile, mosquitoes... pollinating, cleaning waterways as nymphs, females just needing the slightest amount of blood to lay a couple hundred eggs. Forgotten, maligned, made the focus of actual efforts to purposefully cause species extinction. ._.

uphillbothways ,
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

Mosquitoes don't directly cause death, though.
They are susceptible to diseases. They pass those diseases on. Those diseases cause death.
Bees cause more direct deaths due to anaphylactic shock from allergies to apitoxin.

Mosquitoes just catch all the blame.

Being insufferable is a great way to become redundant. Doesn't matter if you're a platform or a person, rich or poor. Anything can be more trouble than it's worth. And if you are given the chance to stop and think about it, it's probably been true for a while already.

Seems like debate and people changing their minds when presented with new information is something that died around 9/11, if it ever even existed. Even the most mild vocal disagreement just further entrenches people in their feelings.
There's just no point.

When I was a teenager, an older friend told me how he learned in college history how the first Emperor of China wrote the language, made all these scientific discoveries, etc, etc. And I, knowing fuck all about Chinese history, was like 'you mean he killed all the historians and advisors, then burned all the libraries, so he could take credit, right?' My friend is like 'uhhh.....'

The Bioactive Substances in Spent Black Tea and Arabic Coffee Could Improve the Nutritional Value and Extend the Shelf Life of Sponge Cake after Fortification (pubs.acs.org)

I read that as a neutral example medium. I'm going to try it in some kind of muffins, I think. The 3% dry ratio to flour and general nutrient profile, that it's not going to be bitter or bad for me, that was of most interest to me.
I drink enough tea. Might as well. And it's a free preservative that's good for me and adds flavor.

I read all the theories. All I can muster is 'oh no, not Russia's pipeline.' Seems like however you cut it, Russia did this to themselves by invading Ukraine. They were kind of on a more decent path towards meaningful integration for a minute. Would have been good for common Russians and everyone else if they'd stayed on that path. But, instead their leadership decided on extreme aggression.

Profit is the portion of revenue that is stolen from workers and given to shareholders. Profit is bad. Revenue is good.

uphillbothways , (edited )
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

Which is crazy, right? If a stock sale allows an investment in a business, a stock buyback should be a paying off of that debt, freeing more revenue in the future to be used explicitly to pay workers who generate that revenue. How the fuck that is justified in instead enriching the value of other investments still held by other investors shows the selective use of the analogy by corporate interests and that the whole house of cards is just bullshit.

Unfortunately, the only face this disease gets is when a celebrity or politician is struck with it. In terms of dementia awareness, that's all there is. My interest in the article was about the disease, not the individual. There wasn't much information there, but awareness is important. Dementia is increasing in the population, partly due to an increase in average age.

uphillbothways ,
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

That's true. But, I think for many, it's kind of a black box. How it progresses isn't something people want to think about. It's pretty unpleasant, but is also a vital part of that support for the family you mention. Having something to compare their own experiences with. Being able to ask is this normal. That sort of thing.

It's a very sad disease.

San Jose woman loses limbs after battling bacterial infection from tilapia (www.kron4.com)

There’s a warning about a dangerous bacteria that might have infected a local woman who’s still recovering after nearly two months in the hospital. An online fundraising effort says she contracted the bacterial infection after eating fish and is now a quadruple amputee....

uphillbothways OP ,

More info on the bacteria here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibrio_vulnificus

"Vibrio vulnificus wound infections have a mortality rate around 25%. In people in whom the infection worsens into sepsis, typically following ingestion, the mortality rate rises to 50%."

"Increasing seasonal temperatures and decreasing salinity levels seem to favor a greater concentration of Vibrio within filter-feeding shellfish of the U.S. Atlantic seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico, especially oysters (Crassostrea virginica)."

uphillbothways OP , (edited )
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

From: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/CDPH%20Document%20Library/VibriosisEpiSummary2013-2019.pdf

Epidemiology of Vibriosis in California, 2013-2019

During the surveillance period, V. parahaemolyticus was the most common species identified
as the cause of vibriosis (845 cases, 50.0% of cases), followed by V. alginolyticus (269 cases,
15.9%) and non-toxigenic V. cholerae (91 cases, 5.4%). Thirty cases (1.8%) of V. vulnificus
were reported. Among the 1,481 cases with complete hospitalization information, 287 (19.7%)
of 1,454 non-V. vulnificus cases were hospitalized and 23 of 27 (85%) of V. vulnificus cases
were hospitalized. Deaths were reported among 30 (1.8%) case-patients at the time of case
report. Of these deaths, 10 (33.3%) had V. vulnificus infection and the others had infection with
another Vibrio or unidentified species.

The spread of Vibrio vulnificus as a result of warming coastal waters seems worthy of concern. Though uncommon, it is far more dangerous than other Vibrio species. Anything that could raise the incidence of infection is very bad.

uphillbothways OP ,
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

It's sad, but it's of note for epidemiological reasons. If no one else ate the fish, there's no reason to think a second person could have become sick.
