BBC News - cannot meet or demand, report says
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-68725973

Personally, I blame the hashtag and the @actuallyautistic group for helping people like me discover that we're autistic. 😆

I wonder if we get to the point of the curve flattening anytime soon. Since most of the demand appears to come from adults who grew up without the awareness and diagnosis available. With early diagnoses in kids, hopefully becoming more and more common, I would assume that the amount of late diagnoses will decrease eventually.

How do my comrades feel about airports?

Planes?

What are your top tips?

@actuallyautistic

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic

Apart from the usual annoyances (security checks) pretty good actually. The crowds don't bother me, I now stay away from shops (bookstores excluded of course :-) ) , and as usual I prefer to be on my own, passing time eating and reading, or going outside if possible.

Isle seat on the plane for long distance flights, and noise canceling headphones, and I am pretty happy.

Do my comrades have a journaling practice?

What's it look like?

@actuallyautistic

tofulogie ,
@tofulogie@det.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Let's say I am trying. A personal journal entry in the evening over a cup of tea, before bedtime, and occasional a blog kind post in social media (since my job takes me to various places), which I also consider as a kind of journal. Skipping on that recently, but still want to continue. Journaling in the morning however did not work for me at all.

What are your favorite books, shows, movies, documentaries, blogs, Ted Talks about autism?

"Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity " by Steve Silberman was one of my first books after I considered the possibility of being autistic. Always liked to research history of thinks that interested me, as it often helps to understand if you know how something was discovered or/and developed. Still one of my favorite readings.

On World Mental Health Day, don't forget that I have a short and (I'm told) interesting podcast episode on neurodivergence and mental health.

Take a look if you've got 12 minutes to spare to build your understanding of how mental health can show up for different brains, and to reflect on what you want and need.

That was reallly interesting to listen to, and I love the podcast name, too :-) Definitely going to give the reflection questions at the end some thoughts later, thank you very much!

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I find the discovery highly interesting, and it is certainly necessary to keep an eye on that. But - the beginning of the article is extremely problematic in my opinion, completely ignoring the improved ways of diagnosis in the last decades as the current consent of why there are so many more autistic kids today than 30 years ago. Especially since the study cited does not make such a claim at all.

The discussion about the hashtag is really annoying. It's the hashtag for Autistic people either self-indentified or officially diagnosed and if your research about the Autistic community didn't provide you this knowledge, then maybe you should do more research or ask the community before you start complaining. Who are you to criticise a hashtag that connected and empowered thousands of marginalized disabled people for years? (1/2)

Thanks a lot for explaining, and also for the reference to the original announcement. Just want to let you know that this was extremely helpful for me, not only for understanding the reasons for the discussions I have been seeing recently, but also for my very own understanding of the hashtag. I also had no clue about the issues it caused. So, thanks a lot, very much appreciated.
