Cool project but doesn’t really address OPs concerns.

Consider your threat model. Billion dollar mega corporations have no interests in going after jobless teenagers.

I think they’re trying to say that in some circumstances the “daughter” could be an adult. It would still be rape (in this example) but not child abuse.

My interpretation was this + in terms of the actual “sponsored” results work by matching “kids clothing” with advertisers who match for that term, and Google “changing” it into “$brand_name kids clothing” which seems entirely obvious when spelling it out.

I haven’t used Google as my primary search engine for many years but occasionally I do run a search on it. While the quality of results is extremely low, I never noticed anything obvious like a generic search term only returning results for a specific brand + that search term like the original article implied.

It seemed like a giant misunderstanding of how it all works from the start but made for a great headline.

Most people don’t understand how bad Google has become. It’s like not noticing how tall you’ve grown until your grandmother points it out.

I’m not taking a side either way on this comment. I would just like to point out that Ukraine claimed their land in 1991 while Israel had theirs since 1948 (according to this image.) If you would argue that Ukraine is Ukraine because they have been since 1991 wouldn’t it be even more fair to say that Israel has been Israel for even longer? If Palestine wants to take back what was theirs pre-1948 why can’t Russia take back what was theirs as recently as 1991?

Coming from someone who is mostly ignorant about Palestine vs Israel politics and happy to be educated!

Personally, it’s hard to agree with either side when there are very clearly religious motivators. Both sides have done things that are clearly wrong. It’s not about people vs state, or people vs foreign state, it’s always framed as Jewish vs Muslim. It’s hard to imagine a future where each side does not stop until the other is wiped out. It’s hard for people of different religions to live in harmony when the state is so intertwined with religion. Israel gets a lot of international support because at least they have a relatively stable government.

As unfortunate is this is, the more it happens my hope is that people understand how important your privacy and security is on the internet. Trying to explain it to people feels like a losing battle at times. It’s easier when you can point and say “how would you feel about your genetic information being sold on the internet?”

How does any of this fit into the reality that you can pay $1 per 1000 captchas for a real, actual human to solve them? It seems like so much effort is put into this cat&mouse narrative with bot makers, ignoring the reality that sometimes labour is actually much cheaper.

The top/1st line is the first service and it cascaded down as each subsequent service starts. Left to right is time elapsed. Bright red line is time to start that service. Shorter is better.

Does that help?

stifle867 ,

Does it work by emulating the keyboard and typing in the password? Or by the encrypted protocol that works using the on device secret?

I know you put bottleneck is quotes but just to explain… apparently this service is simply the splash screen that waits on a ready environment. It doesn’t actually delay anything.

  1. The location of your downloads, generally, does not matter. It can matter where you install your media after download however (e.g., video games, operating systems). There are a few considerations you should make regarding download location:
  • Reliability - is the device going to fail and lose your data? For this you should research backups and redundancy.
  • Size - is the storage device able to store large files? Obviously a 2GB USB drive is not going to fit a 100GB game. You should also research drive formats as, for example, FAT32 cannot store files over 4GB in size.
  • Speed - transferring large files can take significantly longer on slower drives. You may also run into issues, for example, playing UHD HDR media from a slower/portable drive.
  1. By “breaking any rules” I’m assuming you mean laws. Short answer: no. Longer answer: outside of advocacy and lobbying engaging in piracy is generally illegal.
  2. Both have pitfalls to look out for. A lot of sites are scams designed to take your money, serve as many ads as possible, and infect you with malware. If you stick to reputable sites and make efforts to protect yourself (e.g., install uBlock Origin) you should be mostly fine. Torrents are generally better as they aren’t easily taken down but may not download if nobody is seeding the files. Direct downloads can link to dead links but may be useful if the file is not popular enough to seed.

In general:

  • stick to reputable sites
  • install and use a VPN
  • install and use an adblocker

Tor is going to be way too slow in most cases to download anything sizeable. Most of Tor’s benefits are when browsing onion sites and used in conjunction with other tools.

Looking for the simplest means of playing videos from a USB storage device on a non-smart TV

Having already configured a VLC-powered Google TV configuration with USB hard drives for a relative without the router or download speed needed for reliable streaming, I’m now trying to configure a similar setup for another relative with a non-smart TV and an even slower download speed....

stifle867 ,

The “simplest” method is to plug the USB straight into the TV if the TV supports USB playback. You could also try plugging the USB into the router as many of them support DLNA servers - not a solution but a piece of the puzzle that can be used.
