The second edition of Autistic Revolution magazine has arrived! Focusing on Community and Belonging.

Here's my contribution: School Culture vs Autistic Identity

(My opinions as a former school pupil, ex-teacher and parent of children who used to go to school, but are now home educated.)

"The constant mismatch between the autistic child and the school environment grinds away at the sense of self. This is why it is so important for children to know they are autistic. The reason why they struggle at school is not that they are “bad”, “stupid”, or “lazy" but because the environment is not designed for how their brains work.
...
In addition, when autistic children have to hide parts of themselves in order to ‘fit in’ at school, they cannot become a true part of their community. They are unable to build genuine connections with their teachers and peers, because of the fear that people won’t accept them as they are. "

I'm working on a blog post about autistic-led organisations in the UK. Meaning they are run by autistic people, for autistic people. So far I have got (in no particular order):

  • Spectrum Gaming
  • Autistic Parents UK
  • Autistic UK
  • Autistic Revolution
  • Autscape
  • Aucademy
  • Scottish Women’s Autistic Network
  • Autism Inclusion Matters - Isle of Wight
  • AMASE (Autistic Mutual Aid Society Edinburgh)
  • Autistic Inclusive Meets
  • AutAngel
  • Appeer
  • Neurodivergent Friends in Thanet

Are there any more? I'm sure there must be other local ones I don't know about at the very least. @actuallyautistic

I've come to believe that in a society that seeks to oppress us, finding a way to exist happily and authentically is an act of resistance in itself.

New Blog Post! How to Meditate When You Can’t Sit Still: Neurodivergent Meditation Hacks for Autistic & ADHD Folks

**"**Meditation seems to inspire a love it or hate it reaction. When I talk to people about meditation, I tend to get one of two responses. The first is “I liked it once I got the hang of it”. The second is “I can’t meditate”.

...

Did you know that there are actually lots of different ways to meditate? There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it, in my opinion. It’s about finding what works for you, and that can be different on different days or in different phases of life. This blog post explores some of the many options, which I hope gives you some useful ideas to try."

Covering:

  • When Not to Meditate
  • What Meditation Isn't
  • Timing
  • Preparing to Meditate
  • Position
  • Anchor
  • Guided Meditation
  • Lowering Demands
  • Moving Meditation
  • Minfdulness
  • Personalisation

If there were no barriers, and you had unlimited resources. What one thing would you do?

I would start an academic institution dedicated to the study and advancement of the neurodiversity paradigm and movement.
