quinacridone ,

Totally agree…

I’ve been using mint for the last 4 years, and while I have had to use the command line for some obscure installs, it also works as an OS without needing to use it (i jumped in at the deep end and installed it in a pc I got from my brother and used it as my everyday OS)

I don’t understand why Mint isn’t the first suggestion for Linux ‘virgins’ switching over from Windows etc, it has everything you need pre installed plus the download manager for anything else

Linux has a flavour for everyone, and after a while when you’re confidence and skills grow there is the fun of using the command line and a bit of tinkering…or not, if you are happy with the ‘basics’

I don’t normally comment on news posts, but in this instance, FUCK CANCER

Fuck cancer for stealing my brother from me, and for taking half my bf’s lung

I seriously hopes this works for everyone out there living with this disease, and for their families, friends, the people who love them…

…and also for everyone who has died too soon and missed their chance for survival. Their donation of tissue samples and furthering the cancer research that ultimately wouldn’t help them, but will help the poor bastards that are diagnosed today and in the future…It is bitter sweet

Fuck cancer

I discovered The CryptoNaturalist over at the other place, and ending up buying ‘Field Guide to the Haunted Forest’ and ‘Love Notes from the Hollow Tree’ by Jarod K. Anderson…

Which is unusual for me as I detest poetry. I think it’s a pile of long-winded, navel gazing wank…Except for haiku, (because they’re short and sweet, and condense things down to their essence, which I like).

I like The CryptoNaturalist though, probably because they write about nature in a weird, beautiful and wonderous way. I want to use the word ‘magical’ to describe it, but am reluctant, for reasons

Also, thanks to this post I just found out there’s a couple of other books available which I’m going to buy tonight 😀

I rather like this one…

wearily she waves

the white flag of surrender

cobwebbed butterfly

—Tracy Davidson from here

Pawprints fade, empty

Silence fills the empty space

Love lives on, always

From here

I sometimes feel that the classic haiku are let down by some translations, and the fact there are Japanese words that don’t translate across very well or at all.

I have a soft spot for this one

The old pond,

A frog jumps in:

Plop!

Translated by Alan Watts from here

It’s interesting to see how each translation differs, and tries to put into English something that is probably untranslatable…also…

pond

plop!

Translated by James Kirkup

‘The sound of water’ ‘kerplunk’ ‘splashing the water’ ‘leap, splash’ ‘water note’ …just don’t capture it for me

Do you know any that are decent?

quinacridone ,

Guilty as charged

quinacridone ,

I quite often do this for art books, I find it easier on my eyes reading text on the pirate ebook version (I can make the font as big as I need), but use the hardcopy for eyeing up the pictures

Seconding the massage gun, I had terrible muscle pain around my knee for over a year and after using one it went. I nearly fell off the bed as there wasn’t any pain. I’m now trying to loosen up the ligament/tendon around the knee and in my hip as it’s still tight…It’s really nice to be able to go on a long walk and not be in pain or having to use sticks when going downhill

I know I may sound like an Amazon review, but the difference is amazing, and also reassuring as I thought I would be heading over hill into pain and general decrepitude…I’m also using it to loosen up the bf’s knotty shoulders and bad back

quinacridone ,

I’ve just finished season 1 of rewatching DS9 (again) and Vedic Winn has just made her debut…she’s such a deeply horrible piece of work, and Louise Fletcher is perfect in bringing her to life

I’m going to enjoy seeing all the nefarious politicking along with Garak and Quark, Gul Dukat, and Jeffrey Coombs staring as Inertial Dampers…

November (and December) are going to be good!

quinacridone ,

I actually like the background looking like that…I just have issues with the mug, I’m finding the reflective surface it’s sitting on is more interesting tbh

quinacridone ,

I like how it’s reflecting the clouds, crane and orange ‘panels’

quinacridone ,

Hi, nice photo…I was thinking originally ‘ceiling tiles’ but I’m now thinking it’s something much, much smaller…? What am I looking at?

Also, I’ve cross posted this to abstract photography, with a link to your original post and credit

quinacridone ,

Thanks for the info!

The other photos you’ve posted are also really good, especially the boat, the colour really pops and I love the water…I’m looking forward to seeing more of your back catalogue 👍

quinacridone ,

I feel your pain lol, I go out and take loads of photos, then have to wade through them to find maybe one half decent one…it’s a journey though, and a bit of fun!

[OC] Portland (Maine, USA) Head Light lighthouse in black and white (discuss.online)

I had a chance to visit the Portland Head Light lighthouse and Fort Williams park in Portland, Maine recently. I thought it looked nice in black and white. Canon R5, RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens. We saw it at low tide, so I thought I’d try to capture the texture of the rocky foreground....

quinacridone ,

I thought this was a linocut or pencil drawing in the thumbbail, very nicely done black and white photo

quinacridone ,

Hope you don’t mind me cross posting this to https://lemmy.ml/c/abstractphotography

I’ve included a link to this post and credited you

Impressive photo btw, and really nicely executed

quinacridone ,

Post your photos anyway, I still have ‘pending subscriptions’ from a while ago on other communities, and it’s the first time it’s appeared for a user on one of mine. I still haven’t found a ‘accept subscriber’ button on the mod ‘tools’ I shall keep looking, and again please feel free to post your photos!

quinacridone ,

I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve cross posted it to abstract photography

quinacridone ,

Yep, a link to the original post and your user details

quinacridone OP ,

Seriously?

We had no idea what happened and why it appeared in his gallery, it was possibly due to sausage fingers then rather than some strange photography alchemy. When I see him next I’ll check out the wallpapers in his phone…At least we know what it is now Lol, Thanks!

quinacridone OP ,

That is quite possible, he doesn’t have this set as his wallpaper, but his phone can be a bit glitchy at times, and as I pointed out before sausage fingers

quinacridone OP ,

https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/b117ad69-477a-4de0-b013-b90b17a1780d.jpeg

Definitive proof that it’s a wallpaper on a glitchy phone/sausage fingers

I’ll edit the post or delete it

quinacridone OP ,

And proper webs too! Nice and prominent with the owner sat in the middle :)

The day after I took this photo we came back for another walk, just as a bee unfortunately flew into the web. I was going to try and rescue the bee, but it would have been covered in web and basically doomed anyway…so we let the spider deal with it

Here’s all the action lemmy.ml/post/4729765

quinacridone OP ,

Aw, thank you!

quinacridone OP ,

They don’t bother me like that, probably because I know that they’re always outside just chilling in their web…I think I’ve managed to overcome my primal instincts regarding creepy crawlies and snakes and so on, in that I’ll try and catch them and pick them up for a closer look

It probably helps that I live in the UK though, and not Australia or other tropical place…they have some mental things there

quinacridone OP ,

Yep, there’s nothing quite like that unnerving feeling of walking face first into a spider web

quinacridone OP ,

I’ve had a look through my field guides, and yes, I think you’re right

quinacridone ,

I just commented about it looking like Alien over at your post at !Photography

quinacridone ,

Did anyone else see the words ‘David Attenborough…’ and feel their heart sink a bit, thinking he’d died?

Then I cheered up, life in the old dog yet, bless him

From series 'The Dark Woods' by Albert Dros (lemmy.ml)

‘…known for transforming ordinary landscapes into works of art… his recent series, shot in a foggy forest in Luxembourg, is no exception. The Dark Woods is a series of images that captures the beauty of colorful autumn leaves paired with the mystery of a light fog that rolls through the landscape…’...

quinacridone OP ,

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with art being ‘just a pretty picture’, there is plenty of artwork that has powerful meaning attached to it, for example ‘Guernica’ by Picasso- it’s striking, very large, has a strong anti war message and is loaded with symbolism…I wouldn’t want it on my wall though (even if I could get it to fit)

I like abstracts mainly because I love colour (I think it may be an autistic thing, as I don’t like portraits or images where humans appear, but I can still appreciate the technical skill involved)

For me, an image like this is visually bathing in colour, it’s very stimulating or it can be soothing depending on the colour used. I like the patterns and how they repeat, also how they appear to tumble down the canvas/paper, there’s an energy in the composition and also in the marks made by the brush/pastel/pen.

The community you link has in the sidebar-

‘It is not required, but if you know, please talk a bit about the scene in the image. What’s going on? Who is in it? Why is it happening? Do you like it? Why?’

possibly to encourage engagement and discussion, which is a nice touch, I think it also helps that all the images are illustrating scenes from Tolkien literature, who was rather good (an understatement) at writing and world building. I think that Tolkein produced enough detailed content to be discussed and analysed for some time

I think ultimately, even if this piece of art is not to your taste or you don’t understand the meaning (if there is any meaning to it), has got us both talking about it, which I think is a good thing, and possibly the whole point of art in the first place?
