Just a heads up if you’re using Jerboa and switch to a FOSS keyboard: github.com/dessalines/jerboa/issues/194

TL;DR: AOSP keyboard (and maybe also OpenBoard too) may have some glitches when entering text in Jerboa. If you do change to another keyboard, you might test that and add a comment to that issue to help with finding the root cause.

Yep.

Also, never trust a keyboard that requires network access.

ptz , to selfhosted in Well well 🤨
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

If you use an instance just for yourself, it doesn’t actually decrease the load on the main servers in any way.

That’s not completely true. Yeah, it still loads another server a bit, but the server-to-server federation traffic is much more lightweight than the client-to-server traffic that would be involved with you having an account on that server and accessing it that way.

But yeah, multiple, equally-sized communities on different instances is the ideal situation. The only sticky part right now is FOMO because you’d have to constantly watch for new SelfHosted communities and join them. Hopefully some frontend tools come along soon to make joining/managing multiple communities like that more streamlined.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Wind: The sun (a giant fusion reactor) heats the atmosphere which generates the wind (highly simplified).

Hydro: Driven by the water cycle where the sun plays a key role in the “evaporation, condensation, precipitation” process.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

That is true. I guess it depends on how much of the heat is generated via fission processes and how much is just stored from planetary accretion. I don’t have any numbers for that at this moment, but I will certainly concede that geothermal is fusion-assisted lol.

ptz , to showerthoughts in All renewable energy is fusion energy with a really round about way of collecting it
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I could be wrong, but I think geothermal may be the exception to that. That heat is from the formation of the planet and radioactive decay (fission). That heat/energy would have coalesced during the accretion process regardless of whether the sun was adding energy. Again, I think. If I’m wrong, please enlighten as this is an interesting topic.

Edit: I was thinking I might be technically wrong since we can’t really “renew” geothermal energy, but Wikipedia does have it classified as renewable:

Geothermal power is considered to be a sustainable, renewable source of energy because the heat extraction is small compared with the Earth’s heat content.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

An interesting aspect of the parallel universe theory and its implications for consciousness is that at any given time we would be “sharing” consciousness with infinite many other beings.

This is my mental explanation for déjà vu. Change our mind. Lol

ptz , to android in How does everyone feel about Sony (+Ericsson) Phones?
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Oh, nice! Assumed since Sony it’d be locked down and walled-in like every other Sony device I’ve owned. I’ve been sticking with OnePlus and Motorola and making sure the ones I got were bootloader-unlockable, but I may give them a look for my pending upgrade.

ptz , to reddit in Am I crazy, or Infinity still works for me?
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

That’s both noble and sad at the same time.

I love(d) Infinity, but Reddit has shown their true colors and the dev is knowingly getting into an abusive relationship. Even with the subscription model, most of that is going to Reddit and not the dev team.

I wish them the best, but I don’t see how this is going to end well. Hope they come to their senses before losing too much money and would love to see Infinity for Lemmy.

Can you easily unlock the boot loaders to install Lineage? What kind of factory bloatware comes on them?

ptz , to android in How does everyone feel about Oneplus phones?
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’m still on a OnePlus 3 (literally replying on it).

I like that I can just unlock the bootloader and flash LineageOS without any artificial restrictions. It gets annoying having to look for specific models of Moto that van be unlocked or hoping the one I get from Amazon is actually not from a carrier. OnePlus is pretty much a safe bet.

Looking for a successor before this one gives up the ghost. Lol

ptz , to news in Moderation / Rules of "news" community?
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

From a combatting misinformation perspective:

If we’re drafting rules here, I’d like to suggest a rule that the original article URL should be the one used for the post, even if it’s to a paywalled source. It helps immensely in vetting sources without first having to click into an obfuscated archive link. I’m all for sidestepping paywalls, but I think it would be beneficial to have the archive link in the post body instead.

Part of my media literacy protocol is establishing that the source is trustworthy, and it gets annoying / tedious clicking into an archive link only to find out the source is “Jimbob’s REEL TRUTH NEWZ”.

I’m also on the fence about linking to YouTube (and similar) videos as news sources.
