Using AI to spot edible mushrooms could kill you | AI tools are good for some things, but don’t trust your health to apps that make frequent mistakes (wapo.st)

In particular, know how to identify the common and deadly species (eg: much of the genus Amanita) yourself, and get multiple trustworthy field guides for your part of the world.

phdepressed ,

Now that is a thought. Instead of AI doing a skynet/terminator thing it gets to the point we trust it and then tells us to eat or do things that kill us.

phdepressed ,

Hope not, if it goes down low enough maybe someone reasonable can buy it out.

I mean clean/heat container add coffee and water, let soak(brew?) ~3min then press and pour? Is that fancy? I have found that different coffees would need different times at which the brew would become too bitter or too weak but that is largely coffee dependent since my water is the same temp for all. I like trying different coffees so rarely have the desire to figure out the specifics to French press each one.

Weight Lifting: How are you supposed to know the weights of unlabled things?

I started lifting weights (again) and accurately tracking my progress (I bought a “cheap” workout and weight loss plan, which requires a lot of data so you can see your progress (or regress)). When bench pressing and doing squats on the (Cybex) Smith Machine I had assumed that the bar weighed 45 pounds like a free bar does...

phdepressed ,

This site has a chart of bar weights for cybex. fitnessvolt.com/smith-machine-bar-weight/-muc…

Per a pinned extra weight besides finding your machine info the easy assumption is that they are increments between the most common weights. So on your machine 7.5lb for a single pin weight would be a safe assumption.

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

It’d still be CSAM whether AI or not.

That type of direct agreement is not necessary to prove collusion (makes it easier to prosecute certainly) but intent doesn’t matter legally. Using a software that has an inbuilt collusion algorithm is still collusion. This is also on a larger scale than mom+pop these algorithms and software were/are used by much larger companies that own magnitudes more units.

The top 0.1% in the US have ~20Trillion in wealth. That’s enough for all ~340million Americans to get 58,000. Globally across all ~10Billion people thats enough for everyone to get 2,000. That’s a one time thing, making it an investment isn’t accurate to what it represents in terms of value generated that was not given to the workers.

At the US level 58k would get most people out of student loan debt (29k average)and free from credit card debt(6k average).

At a global level 2,000 would allow the world’s poor to be able to eat a healthy diet(3.54) every day for over 1.5 years or a subsistence diet (0.83) for 6.6 years

What I’m saying about this amount of wealth is that it is because people were not paid the value of their work. They gained 20T over the years because that is what they make from underpaying and overcharging. That unregulated capitalism is the basis that leads to such obscene wealth. Redistribution is not about investment but changing the underlying system. It’s basically 58k of backpay. People would largely use it to get out of debt and improve their lives in some way.

From then on with the system changed people are getting an extra 5,800/y. Enough for significantly more families to avoid food insecurity and get/stay out of debt. Those two things are the biggest helps you can give people to reduce crime, and improve communities. It doesn’t have to be much as multiple UBI studies have shown.

Older genX also hasn’t done well either. The personal finance sub was full of people concerned about older parents and relatives not having savings or living ability when shit hits the fan and questioning how to manage their own families + the elders.

That’s a disingenuous statement. Gregor Mendel was a monk(and became an abbot). Darwin very nearly became a priest and waited years to publish the origin of species until Alfred Wallace independently came to the same conclusion partly because Darwin was conflicted about how it went against Christian dogma at the time. Even now there are plenty of scientists with religious faith and belief. There’s no scientific guidance on souls.

phdepressed ,

NAS is far from every scientist. There’s a graduate+faculty faith organization at most if not all R1 institutes.

As you state a soul is a philosophical concept which is why faith is so involved in trying to dictate what “life” is.

If you want to beat them we need to be arguing at the correct level for understanding. The church not caring til Roe and abortion of some sort being done for hundreds or thousands of years is not the argument that matters to fundies. It is when life is determined to have a soul in their belief. If scientific facts argue against philosophical belief, neither side will ever understand the other.

They are strict now, the slippery slope argument is that it won’t stay that way. We’ve seen mod tools similar to this make mistakes. Twitch, Tumblr, YouTube, Facebook, etc all have algorithm analysis for moderation purposes and all of them have messed up and require additional human review.

The Country With Nothing Left to Lose (foreignpolicy.com)

Nauru is the “world’s richest little isle,” the New York Times proclaimed in 1982, the result of a decadeslong mining rush for the island’s phosphate bounty. But once the mining boom went bust, so too did the money—setting Nauru on a quest for cash that has seen it launder money for the Russian mafia; effectively...

phdepressed ,

I have to wonder what a “one world” government would do here. Sacrificing one little islands with statistically insignificant population to power the overall majority and prevent worse global effects? That seems fairly utilitarian… Countries sacrifice weaker countries and internally sacrifice their poor as well (see factories and mining the world over). What changes with a one world government is simply whether the cause-effect is internal or external. This is an unregulated capitalism problem not a Nation problem.

phdepressed ,

Would you have never mentioned this to anyone, knowing your country has mandatory service? Never protested about mandatory military service? Are you not even a member of an anti-military group? In many countries you have the option of joining. When you don’t have an option not being involved doesn’t make sense.

phdepressed ,

The point being that if you are a conscientious objector in a country with mandatory service and few exceptions, perhaps you should do some stuff as evidence for that. Otherwise you experience the consequences of inaction. In an ideal world armies don’t exist and if so joining would be entirely voluntary but we don’t live in an ideal world.

phdepressed ,

I mean starting objecting too close to service is likely to be seen as faking it to get out. How close is too close is not something for me to determine. The length of time a belief is held has little to do with the strength of a particular belief. But that’s even harder to judge.

He has the DEA reevaluating what schedule it is classed as. He does not have authority to make it legal. Again laws.

He tried to forgive significant student loan debt for everyone and got stopped by SCOTUS. He still has forgiven a lot of debt but it takes work to figure out who he can do it for without congressional approval and the SCOTUS ruling. Student loans are also based in laws that he can’t as easily bypass.

He is trying to help Americans and he has. Not as much we’d like but a hell of a lot more than the GOP.

Fox is not a small-time, they have more primetime viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined. If people’s first exposure to a movement is something like that interview…Several other news outlets also rehosted clips and wrote stories about just how terrible it was. That creates a strong barrier to anyone labeled as being “with” that person to overcome in order to be taken seriously. Whereas if you discovered the community where there were memes/conversations around workers rights and how they’re getting fucked the perception is much different.

It also was directly against the wishes of a community vote and mod discussion of doing a fox interview. A very good way to tell supporters of a movement that a purported “leader” doesn’t actually care about what they’re saying. To say that it was minor damage really underplays how it affected perception and unity of the community.

Because a human has to use talent+effort to make something that’s fair use. They adapt a product into something that while similar is noticeably different. AI will

  1. make things that are not just similar but not noticeably different.
  2. There’s not an effort in creation. There’s human thought behind a prompt but not on the AI following it.
  3. If allowed to AI companies will basically copyright everything…
phdepressed ,

And that is human effort, not the AIs.

Tinnitus is a constant whine. Other actual noise helps prevent having to constantly be thinking and feeling the whine because the “white noise” has your ear dealing with other things.

It isn’t the reason everyone listens to white noise but people with Tinnitus could help themselves go less crazy if they listen to white noise.
